Great video. However if I remember correctly, Gnomes was only used as a name for the Noldor in the early writings, and not the elves as a whole. There was also a point in the video where you confused Eriol with Earendel, but that's just a minor peeve. Otherwise looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.

Yep good points, thanks! I was doing the video mainly from memory and forgot about the Gnomes-Noldor link. It's easy to get confused in Tolkien's intricate work but that's half the appeal!

@@TalkingTolkien Agreed. There are so many interesting details and concepts in The Lost Tales that are transformed or disappear in the later Silmarillion writings.

3:52 - I disagree - Elves were already called "elves" in BoLT, though the word "fairies" appears sometimes. "Gnomes" (which I always fancied came from "gnosos" = "knowledge" rather than the more popular etymology "ge-nomos"="ground-dweller") refers to a particular race of elves - also called the "Noldoli" - who in the Silmarillion are called "Noldor". In "The Hobbit" they are referred to as "Deep Elves" - though I believe that in very early editions they were still called "gnomes". (P.S. I've just noticed Anders Vedby made the same point, but I'll leave my post up because I included some extra information.)

+1 Sub . Relaxing channel and I admire your tolkien collection . I'm just getting excited for the new tv show being made by Amazon about the Second Age . So I'm trying to get all the knowledge I can get book wise. First second and third age stuff . Everything lol. Hopefully this tv show is gonna be loyal to the lore . Not gonna be filled with made up events . As long as it makes sense like for new charectors etc . But looking forward to seeing hopefully some big events like the making of the rings , longer version of the War of the Last Alliance , seeing charectors more in depth like Gil Galad , Isildur , Elendil , Sauron and more new charectors that may shine like Ar Pharazon and Anarion and Celebrimbor more . Hopefully it'll be true to these events .

Love your video as a new Tolkien Reader, I just finished the hobbit and LOTR, i plan to eventually dive into the big book soon. I am slighty confused as a new collector how do i collect the history of middle earth books as reader copies? i see a box set of the first 5 but then they dont match the rest that have the cool art on them?

There's a lot of awesome old poems written by tolkien shown in the commentary along the way as well. Doubt they were published in anything else.

I am a verry poor reader and i have read the silmarillion and at times i didnt have a clue what was happening but overall i really enjoyed it especially the children of hurin and beren and luthien storys. Are these books sort of the same just with more added or are they same word for word?

Also, while you were reading, I read along with you. You stated this traveler (Cottage of Play) was named Eärendel...but I read it as he is the son of Eärendel as that is the actual text when first mention of that name is made. Should I read on to see that this traveler's name is ALSO Eārendel as well?

Interesting. My book has copyright date of 1984. And has none of the indicators your copy has. Mine is Houghton Mifflin pub'd. Mine has no numeric designation on the dust cover(which is green) and no numeric on the book cover itself. The first indication of Part 1 is one the title page. I wish I could show you a picture but I'm don't know how to do that in the comments here. Help if you are able. I'm in America and I realize books as with other things, can be presented differently over here.
@TalkingTolkien3 жыл бұрын
Yes I know the one you mean. I'm not an expert on the US market but I believe the History of Middle-earth series were all published by Houghton Mifflin in N. America, and look very different from the UK-published versions. I'm sure the content is exactly the same inside though!

1. Only the Noldoli, Noldor, were called Gnomes. 2. We follow not Eärendel but Eriol.
