Love this video, and the one about Ultras being easy. I run 6 times a week, on treadmill or road. Doing Loch Ness marathon next weekend, then London in April. After that i intend on looking at Ultras and hopefully getting a UTMB index and some stones! Only problem is, i havent done any trail running before and have always stayed away from it because im worried ill be clumsy. Any videos or tips on how to build up from trail zero to hero? 🤣💪

I'm inspired... BUT ...can I achieve Ultra Distance with just lots of Zone 2 training runs?
@ChrisBranch5 күн бұрын
The short answer is 'yes', but the slightly longer answer is that eventually you will benefit from one speed session a week. Starting off with easy running to begin with is a good way to improve your aerobic base, but the speed session is the thing that makes your aerobic base pace faster.

I believe this was a combination of the Insta360 X2 and the GoPro Hero 9. I now use the DJI Osmo Action 4 instead of the GoPro, but I still have the X2. I want to upgrade that to the X4 because the image quality on the X2 isn't great.

How many did you do, Chris ? I did a backyard ultra in June for a different ultra run experience, i well and truly gave into the voices after lap 13 (just under 88km), i had plenty left in the tank to keep going for a few more laps, but the mind wanted me to stop. Yes, it's all about building a solid mind set, the body is pretty amazing on its own... 😃👌
@ChrisBranch5 күн бұрын
I did 14 official laps and attempted 15 but got timed out. I had 100k on the watch which I was happy with, but 59 miles officially ☺️

Beautiful narrative talking about the more elusive but maybe more important parts of ultras, even just pushing beyond your own limits. These are things that are not spoken about as much as practical stuff and don't have specific solutions to them so hearing about other people's mind strategies is very helpful. Thanks!

Thanks, John, I appreciate that. And no, I've hovered over the 'buy' button a few times, but I can never quite justify it. Will it _really_ be better than the general leg work I do? 🤔 I doubt it. Maybe if I did more training at home I would get one, but I've been doing more heavy work in the gym recently, and that seems to be working well for me. I hope your training/racing has been going well too ☺️🙏

@ChrisBranch11 күн бұрын
The format is great fun, I definitely recommend giving it a go. This one was the Gosfield Backyard Ultra, but they have them all over the place now. I did 14 official yards (59 miles), but covered 100k, I just didn't make it back in time to have an official 15 yards. I didn't put it in this video because it wasn't the relevant bit, but I may do a breakdown of the Backyard format in another video because they're becoming quite popular now and I had a good experience with it ☺️

Incredible video! "My inner voice told me I was OK, and in that moment, I was OK. " I love that. I need to get better at shutting off the inner gloomy critic sooner... I'll accept a DNF when I know I've done my best. The times I've regretted my DNF, was when i let that critic get too much air time.
@ChrisBranch12 күн бұрын
I completely agree. I'm not saying we should _never_ quit - we're not Olympic athletes here, so if we're risking genuine injury it's not worth it, but in both my DNFs, I know I could have done better. The voices won. I'm trying to improve though, and bit by bit I think it's working ☺️🙏

I wrote to you on a previous video how I too had gotten a bit too cocky / overly confident / yes arrogant for my last 50k back at the end of June!! My next is tomorrow, though this time a gorgeous trail race in the stunning Fontainbleau Forest south of Paris !! Thank you for the video, its very helpful. I strugle with nutrition myself, i am planning to do solo 100 km ultra run, but i cant wrap my head around how much water do i need to take with me, as there will be no aid stations (solo). I am muscular guy i would like to say 82 kg and i sweat quiet a lot so i drink a lot, on my 30 km long run i take usually 2 liters of water with energy cabrs solution and gels and appels, but i cant seem to hit my recommodation for how much i should eat and drink, as she mentioned in the interview i need to go pee and Poop the whole time, so i am thinking how much water do i need to take for 100 km run, 10 liters? 😀 i need a massive backpack then. What do you think would be a good advice in this situation?
@ChrisBranch12 күн бұрын
For a 100k ultra with no aid stations, I'm guessing there are streams or taps along the way? Get yourself a filter (I have the Hydrapak one to go in my Hydrapak bottles ) and you can top up as you go. It depends on heat and elevation, but I aim at around 500ml an hour +/- depending on the variables.

Basically in short summary you were a weak pathetic man that didn't had no strength you weren't even a man at all. You pathetic. Honestly and the second one you recalled that time of patheticness and being a loser and the shame. After you dropped out and after all that work that she tried to help you out on all that time wasted and the second time you work through it. But still you're still weak though. Kids learn from this man's mistake if you're going to be greedy and do something like this or anything and there's people that support you keep going no matter what keep going no matter ignore everybody that's helping you until the very end once you're done then thank them for the help. That's it and be proudful that you accomplished it and a story

Been watching you for a while (and had the pleasure of meeting you at UTS) and have to say this is one of my favourite videos you've made. I've been dealing with the "I'm not Goggins" and not quite there with the "...and that's ok" but it's been on my mind for a while. At UTS I wonder if I left it all out there or not. I was with 2 guys I met during the race, one who went on and was one of the last 3 to finish and the other made the decision to DNF before I did. I still wonder if he hadn't been there would I have not DNF'ed and gone on to be one of the last four to finish? You've definitely inspired me to take on a backyard ultra with the same mindset and see what my true limit actually is! - Jaden
@ChrisBranch13 күн бұрын
Thanks so much for your kind words. I think we learn through experience. I felt fine the day after my DNF at Snowdonia, so I knew I should have pushed on. But the only place we can remedy it is in our next effort. No point mulling over the past; we just get up and try again ☺️🙏

@ChrisBranch13 күн бұрын
Keep trying, you'll get there. Use a walk:run approach where you walk to bring your HR back down. As a beginner, it doesn't matter so much about sticking to the zones (I've relaxed my view on the zones since making this video). What matters is that you're not absolutely smashing yourself in each session. Try and keep it feeling easy-ish, and don't worry too much about HR until your fitness improves. Best of luck with it 🙏

Great video again Chris, and great timing for me as Ive got a back yard coming up soon. Would love to know more about how you dealt with the race, your logistics, your race set up etc.
@ChrisBranch13 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, I appreciate that. With the backyard, I was fairly minimal. No crew, small tent, ice box of food and a couple of spare t-shirts in a bag. A crew definitely would have helped, particularly as I started to slow down and had less and less time to sort myself out. But otherwise, it's very simple: get back and go again!
