We sang this in my sleep away camp when I was around 12 (1965). I heard part of it in the series "Bad Sisters" and it triggered a memory so I googled. So much we remember and so much we forget.

Reminds me of the traditional description of the state of Purgatory....incarcerated in a melancholy place yet hauntingly beautiful yet hopeful as the curtailing mask is finally removed Can anyone suggest who are the Diceys?

Leave it to Lankum to turn a tragic, irreverent romp of a song about the lowest lows of prostitution into a spiritual experience. It's not the first time they've done it either - not even close. It's like everything they touch turns to gold. Everything.

So the Wrens of the Curragh were camp followers of the British army base there. They use to live rough in camps in the goarse bush around Donnellys hollow. They were young improvised unmarried women who had had relations/children with British soldiers or worked as prostitutes to the soldiers. They were ostracised from Irish society & relied on the soldiers for money
