I have been looking for this kind of folk sound for years now. It sounds very archaic, like something straight out of the 1700s, wandering minstrel, 'early' music, or medieval almost. There was a lovely flourish of this sound in the 1970s with the likes of the early Clannad, early Planxty, Oisin, Steeleye Span. I love English and Scotch folk songs too... shame I've never heard any Welsh. I think much of the Irish folk we hear is either too jingly, polished, or the same 20 songs of what is now touristy shite that has been done to death and back. That, or rebel songs from people with agendas. This is just brilliant, moody, earthy, and rustic. When I saw "The wild rover" I was about to click away, as thats one of the 20 I mentioned... but I'm so glad I stayed, can't wait till I check out the others.. I'm like a child with a new toy, thank you!!

I always thought this song was a happy kind of "let's go drinking song" I was wrong, this version shows what it really is, a haunting story of how drink ruined a man's life and his vow to change his ways.. Thank you Lankum

I like my traditional Irish music the way I like much of my music - thrumming with a tension that suggests that at any given moment reality itself might start bending to the point of cracking, allowing wonderous and terrible things to roam free once again.

This is a marvellous version of a classic drinking song, but told in such a beautiful way that it makes you think of it in a wholly different way. It’s telling a story of how alcohol can destroy a life. The singer’s voice is haunting, as other commenters have said. I only discovered it because of Finding Jack Charlton. It fits that stage of the documentary perfectly.

One of the best interpretations I have ever heard and I love this song. Amazing. I've been a wild rover for many's a year And I've spent half me money drinking strong ale and beer But now for the future I must take better care In case that misfortune might come to my share [Chorus] Wild rovin' I'll give it over Wild rovin' give up And I never will be called the Wild rover no more [Verse 2] I went into an alehouse I used to resort And I told the landlady that my money was short When she heard of my story, oh her answer twas "nay" Sayin' "Custom such as yours I could have any day" [Chorus] Wild rovin' I'll give it over Wild rovin' give up And I never will be called the Wild rover no more [Verse 3] I put my hand in my pocket, some money to find And I pulled out the full of my{?} When she saw I had the money And money galore Then she saw I had the money Well she called me her stór Saying "I have the whiskey and wines of the best All the words I have spoken, they were only in jest"

How is it possible to be homesick for a place that you have never been before?
@SeanBoyce-gp
@SeanBoyce-gp 3 жыл бұрын
I read a thing - I forget where, but almost definitely by an Irish person - that basically said, as a joke, that the Irish invented the feeling of homesickness, because even though they've never really left, home has always been just out of grasp. And when you read the history, it kinda tracks. Hell, even Irish Mythology cycles are basically about new people showing up and taking the island from whoever is already living there. For what it's worth, if ever you should get a chance, go.
