There is a Family Guy episode that is an homage to this movie. You should react to it, and then tack it on the end of this reaction. “I have a picture of my sister!” “I hear she’s pretty good!” “Ooh! You have a tent” “Can I borrow your tent” Every member of the drive in mercenaries is a famous person. 3 of them are behind the camera. The other had a famous guitar named Lucile and never strummed a chord in his life. All single notes of brilliance.

They had two major professional hockey leagues at the time of this movie, the NHL and the WHA. The WHA merged with the NHL in 1979 and four teams joined the NHL: Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques. Only Edmonton remains in place from the WHA merger. The Jets moved to Arizona to become the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes. The Whalers moved to Carolina to become the Carolina Hurricanes and the Nordiques moved to Colorado to become the Colorado Avalanche.

For myself, I don't have to put a movie in a neat little box to know how to watch it. Saying the stakes are more real than Spies like Us, I really don't see that. This movie has no stakes until the very end, the whole time you are along for the ride and straddling the 'are they bad guys or not' line, then at the end they have a double fakeout. Tom Hanks character calls out the neighbors as the villains and wants to make amends to Klopeks, then its revealed Klopeks were actually bad after all. Up until that last minute, there is no real tension or danger and you are just enjoying the chaos. You are more or less in the position as the Kid that creates a party to watch things unfold. But I like that, how it subverts the viewer that expects it in a systematic package.
@vintagemovienights14 күн бұрын
It really is unique. It is fun how it goes between who really was the bad guys until they really where the bad guys!

First of all thank you from the bottom of my heart for reacting to this classic movie. I've loved since it came out and it turned that both of my kids played hockey from about age 6 right thru high school. I can't think of a single kid age mite and above who doesn't know this movie well. It's played on the bus going to and from tournaments - they all know it. The movie was written by Nancy Dowd based on the experiences of her brother who was a minor league player. The story is set Charlestown PA. I have read that Newman said that he had never had so much fun making a movie in his entire career. Joe McGrath is the manager the owner is Anita McCambridge. The casting of this movie is absolutely brilliant. Dunlop and his wife were separated. They were not swingers or polyamorous. Years ago I took my kids to a minor league game here in town and the Hanson's were special guest. There were more people lined up to get their autograph then there were watching the game. I got pictures of my son and daughter with the Hansons, and yes they had the foil on. As I left I asked them if they ever heard from Hanrahan and without missing a beat one of the Hanson's said, "No but I hear from his wife now and again." LOL!!
@vintagemovienights14 күн бұрын
That is awesome!!! It is a classic and so glad I got to watch it for the first time!!! It was a lot of fun!
@yournamehere60022 ай бұрын
It's one of the weaker efforts of the Aykroyd/Chase vehicles (and certainly not excruciating like Nothing But Trouble, which inexplicably has its fans), but drag it does NOT. It moves along at a very quick pace, and I can only assume your attention spans are shorter than the ones we had in the 80's. Of course, we were in a theater, not watching it on a laptop and giving a simultaneous reaction. It was just a Saturday night's entertainment out, and we were all about it.
@vintagemovienights2 ай бұрын
Joe Here....I think my point to dragging, is more that in the 80's we could get away with slower humor as you mentioned......attention spans have certainly decreased...mine included. LOL.

When you are saying that you don't know really what is going on, that should be a sign that you were talking too much over the scenes where things get talked about or explained. It wasn't like small 10 second asides, you were having minutes long discourse and therefore completely ignoring the film. I say this because I recall having seem it long long ago, and don't remember ever being confused. I disagree with your verdicts. I'm not a graphics snob, so the effects being from that time doesn't bother me. And I like when things are slowly developed and given time to sink in for the viewer to experience, or as you call it 'drag'. I wouldn't say it's like a 9 or 10, but 7 or 8 or high 6.
