What if you are using naturally scented deodorant? I use man spruce deodorant and it has all natural ingredients. It works and smells like spruce tree when I first put it on then the smell goes away. I feel this would not scare the deer. Wonder your thoughts on this.
@PatrickHoover3 сағат бұрын
I have not tried any scented deodorants. Always afraid it may spook them.
@richiebailey28220 сағат бұрын
Serious question on the scented deodorant. I have tried the unscented, and it doesn't work, i mean i smell ripe with anything other than degree. So would that be as bad as or worse than a deodorant, if a deer were to smell it?
@PatrickHoover3 сағат бұрын
😂 But on a serious note. I understand some do not work well. Been down that road. Dead downwind made a new one. Similar to their old stick deodorant. But this one has little holes on top that squeezes out the deodorant. It works really well.

I’ve been using black walnuts as a cover scent for years but I just throw freshly picked walnuts in the bottom of an air tight container I bought at Walmart for a few bucks (no pun intended) and cover them with a scent free old towel. After washing clothes in scent free detergent, dry well, and put them into the container, and “immediately” after every hunt everything goes back into the container.

All good advice and basically everything I try to do, but I have one question do you wear anything on your hands when you're handling all these scent proofed items?

Yes, either are wear a pair of gloves. Or I will wash my hands really well for 30 seconds with hunting soap. And then go through my stuff.

I use dove fragrance free soap. It's cheaper than down wind. Brush with baking soda, and hunting gear is scent lok. Is hands down the best gear. The carbon in the garment kills orders. Period.

In addition to this which will minimize your scent, what are your thoughts on Scent Thief?
@PatrickHoover4 күн бұрын
I have never tried it yet. Have you?
@thebadboo48754 күн бұрын
@PatrickHoover No, but Academy has the Trophy combo pack on sale at a killer price with free shipping, so I ordered some. It is not a cover scent but is suppose to “suspend” the ability to smell. The youtube reviews with deer, dogs, and people show that something is happening. With all the precautions you take, this would be the final step to being totally smell proof. Do you think you still get busted occasionally by smell?

I also use a plug in ozone gadget. I plug it into my trucks dashboard outlet. I leave my hunting boots and hunting jacket in my truck to deodorize them while I'm deodorizing the inside of the truck. I let the ozone sit in the truck over night. Air your truck out for a few minutes before you get into it after using the ozone device because you don't want to breathe in ozone. I use the Dead Down Wind "Dead Zone" ozone device.

Anything rubber like hunting boots, if you leave them out in the sun it will remove the rubber smell. Solar heat causes the rubber to release the VOCs.(volatile organic compounds)

I made some for this season after watching this video. Much appreciated. I ordered some sodium benzoate (preservative) online and added it to my batch. I’ve had a spray bottle sitting outside for about a week now and it’s fine. Plus a couple gallons in the fridge. All the commercial sprays have preservatives, so I thought I’d give it a try. Seems to be working. I hunt on the ground, and had one enter my lane about 10y from me on his way to a little bait I had out at 20y. Never spooked. He ate for about 15 minutes then walked off into the woods. Not the one I was looking for, but I felt like it was a good test run for the cover scent with the added preservatives. I’ll make this every year now. Thanks again!

In freezer it will last about a year, in the spray bottle keep it in the fridge and out of the sun it will last 3 months if kept cold. Thanks brother! Good luck this season.

Awesome! I have struggled for years washing my clothes in scent free detergent and keeping my clothes in a bin. I still get busted. This year I am washing my clothes in baking soda and hanging them in a a covered lean to outside in the fresh air. Then putting the clothes in my container and sprinkling dry baking soda on the clothes. Your walnut spray may be just the thing that helps get that big buck another 10 steps closer in the fall. TY so much for sharing. Curt WhitetailsDeerHunting

Hands down best scent control is called DOWN WIND. Its so good, you could smoke a cigarette & and drink a 6 pack while you BBQ. Seriously.
@knuckledragger241221 күн бұрын
Downwind, the only reliable plan. Everything else is just increasing the odds in your favor a few points.
@dougroberts364320 күн бұрын
Make some walnut cover scent, and you dont have to worry about being downwind. I used it last season for the first time, and it's a game changer. On one hunt, I was on the ground and had nine doe circle me at 10 yds. They fed downwind for over 30 minutes before finally leaving. I do wash my hunting clothes and leave them hang outside the entire season. I also shower with scent free soap and shampoo and use scent free deodorant. The walnut cover scent is gold
@hemihayden15 күн бұрын
@knuckledragger2412 agree with you, but being in the mountains wind changes all the time. I personally do a few things. First, hunt the wind if possible but at the same time us Big Woods Scent Co. Cover scents. Being in the high peaks of the Adirondacks wind changes in seconds, especially when you're tracking a deer in the snow, starting sweating, etc. I always prefer a cover scent with an odor eliminator first. But let's be honest, by the time you get to your stand, you're already sweating.

At least you're not hunting where you were at during the Pleistocene (Ice Age) around fifty thousand years ago. There were much bigger bears, cats, and wolves to worry about.
