I had a ‘74 Orange SE 360, automatic, (full time 4wheel driver up to 15mph) loved the truck . I bought it used , about 200,000 miles, drove it another 10 years, I did rebuild the body , interior, painted it two tone red. I think I took trim off. Traded it for the NEW Dodge design pickup. Still driving ‘94 RAM 2500 4x4 5.9 gas. ❤️

A testament to how things were made in the fifties. All the controls and handling components were weighted and designed to work mechanically, and last for a long time. The Basic design of autos did not change a lot from 1945 to 1965. Cheers Austin

Your video was totally perfect! You put out there a wagon, the center and reason for the video. No distracting narrative or peripheral sounds, images, owners want to show off the driving and turn the damned radio on . . .loud, so can't hear the engine. But you showed just the wagon, brilliant! 71+ year old retired Kansas farmer and equal opportunity old car enjoyer. Another educational and entertaining video! I thought the engine on the Fairlane sounded good when you first started it up in the guys garage. Except for tires it doesn’t look like it needs a lot to be a driver. Appearance wise it’s a “20 footer”. I know I’ve mentioned either on this channel or some other that I can remember every car my parents had from the time I was about three or four years old until I left for college. The oldest was a 1950 Plymouth of which I have a vague remembrance of but only know what it was because Dad told me what it was when looking at family pictures with me standing on the front seat. During those years we had a mix of Fords and Mopars. One of the Fords was a 1957 Ford Custom sedan with the 272 V8 , 3 on the tree with no radio and no power nothin’. It was definitely the Plain Jane version of that body style with a mixture of green, white and yellow to the best of my memory. I do remember Dad saying that it had one complete engine overhaul and one ring and valve job during the six or seven years we had it. Dad was not hard on cars but drove a lot because of his job. Oils in those days was pretty poor compared to what we have today. I don’t remember how many miles it eventually had on it but I do remember the day riding in the car with Dad when the odometer rolled over to all zeros for that magical first 100,000 miles which was considered high in those days. Sometimes after the big rollover Mom and Dad bought a new Dodge Coronet 440 with the 318, power steering and an AM radio. Still no AC but we were movin’ on up! The last thing I remember about the 57 was that Dad sold it for $75.00 after they bought the Dodge. That was probably more than any dealer would give him on a trade. Dealers are the same today. Your car is worth nothing until they have it and then it’s made out of gold. For reference that $75 in 1965 is equivalent to $750 today.😊

@@davewinter2688 Cars really depreciated back then. Probably why so many folks just parked them in the barn or backyard when they got a new one!
@davewinter2688Күн бұрын
@@ObsoleteAutomotive Back in those days and I mean the 1960’s and early 70’s, my Dad always said that the optimum time to trade a car was at 60,000 miles. He also always wanted a Buick LeSabre but said that the hIgh early depreciation on those was just to much for him. He finally got his LeSabre in the middle to late 1990’s after his last Plymouth Fury (a 1978 which he had driven so long that he had a new engine put in it) finally was rusted beyond help.

I was curious was it rare for a plain Jane cargo van to have cruise control? And did the cruise work on the van? It looked like it did…

@@erichirsch583 I’d imagine cruise control was not common on cargo vans that would mainly be used for around town driving. The cruise did work.

71+ year old retired Kansas farmer here. Multiple Mopars in my family history. I think I had at least 8 over the last 50 years but nothing newer than 1987. Only two left now, a 1954 Coronet with 241 Hemi and a 1977 Aspen two door coupe with the 225 and four speed manual OD transmission. I had a 1974 Plymouth Scamp, two door hardtop with the 225, automatic transmission and AC. Body appears to be basically the same as this Dart. Another case of “gee I wish I still had that car”, even with the rust It had in the left rear quarter when I sold more than 25 years ago.😢

Nice vid, and thanks for the honesty in relaying just how shitty some aspects of malaise era cars were. I have a ’66 Dart 170 2-door base, and the build quality on my car is exponentially better than my ’75 Dart Sport was. In this car’s defense, the drive train is supurb. I wouldn’t mind finding a car just like this, but with a factory 3 at the knee, or 4 on the floor, sans power steering.

I personally don’t care for the orange paint idea. I like the white just fine as is. The truck does its job. Why spend time and money on things that will not improve the usefulness of the truck or increase its useful life? I know from experience that the headers are a RPITA. Unfortunately a good set of exhaust manifolds may be hard to find but good luck anyway.😊

Can't believe your channel hasn't popped on my feed before today. Amazing old Mopar you have there! Back in 1981 I bought a 74 Plymouth Trailduster. 318 2bbl automatic. Back in those younger days of mine I would back it up to the front porch unbolt the top and get under it and walk it off. That thing was a go anywhere 4x4 and I absolutely had a blast in it. Back then these old rides were plentiful and fairly cheap. What I'd give to have my old Mopar's back today. Want to sell it? Seeing how you got a new sub today.
