In 1979 I was 19 and stationed in Alaska. I was in the Motor Pool and we had just received a one ton 4x4 crew cab that honestly looked like your truck. Well about the second week we had it we had a black ice problem that day and I was careful but I managed to 360 the truck about 4 times in front of the Front Gate of My Base. I was going slow and just tapped the brakes. Well afterwards when everyone stopped getting their panties in a dither I got my ass chewed out by my First Class standing right next to my Chief Petty Officer. After the chewing we sat down after work and had a few beers. Oh the good old days in a Mopar!! Great Videos Thank You 🙏

If you have a lot of deer around and you're going to drive it at night, keep the grille guard. Like someone mentioned, if to plan on hauling lumber or pipes keep the rack, at least keep it. You can always reinstall it. Nice truck-I wish I had it!😂

Austin, if you replace the muffler or re-do the exhaust- here is a helpful hint. Look at "Different Trends" mufflers. 409 stainless steel, fully welded and available on CARID. The 2.5" pair I got for the Valiant were $38 apiece. An automotive engineer buddy turned me onto the brand and absolutely not disappointed
@ObsoleteAutomotive6 ай бұрын
So CARID is legitimate? I’ve always been skeptical!

@@ObsoleteAutomotive it is. You can find Different Trends at other outlets, too- the engineer at US Car Tools (in Graham, NC) got me the part numbers of what he wanted in order to build the exhaust on my Valiant. 71+ year old FUD here. Wow! Now I find this video after watched the one of you putting the new muffler on. Is the paint code on that P6 or PB6? I’m going by memory here. I had a ‘77 Aspen and a ‘77 W150 that both used what looks like the same blue paint. Actually the W150 was originally a two tone with a silver gray top but when it got repainted I went with all blue to save money. I would definitely keep the grill guard /deer and cow catcher. Those can save you a lot of heart aches. I had a fairly easily removable canoe and tipi pole carrier rack made out one inch square tubing. Three separate pieces mounted front bumper, rear bumper and behind the cab in front of the bed. That middle piece was a two person job to put on so it just stayed there. It wasn’t in the way. I know those big headache racks are somewhat unsightly but definitely useful. I’ll send pictures of the W150 if I can ever figure out how to make it work.

How do you prevent rust from exploding on these old vehicles with 'patina' rust underneath since you are taking them out of their arid west environment. I bought a DeSoto fender from a CA desert salvage yard. The back side was thin paint and factory bare metal. In the 20 years in my not wet, but Midwest normal humid basement, the rust greatly grew. It liked being unprotected outside in the desert far more than protected in my not-arid basement.
@ObsoleteAutomotive6 ай бұрын
Pretty much anything subjected to humidity and moisture out here will rust. Many of my desert cars start rusting. Just an unfortunate thing as the western feeds have baked thin paint or bare metal. You can only do preventative things like waxes and such but the only real true fix is repainting. Otherwise just make sure the cars don’t sit damp. Driving them lets them air out!

If she were mine I would ditch the roof rack, fix what’s broken, pop the bondo out of the door, do my best to Paintless dent removal it, and hit it with some primer and whatever can of spray paint I could find that is closest and drive it. It would be a shame to paint the whole truck as she has a great look. If you oil and/or wax the finish, compound and polish before if you want, it would look great. I don’t even mind the wheels on her. 😂
