yup , a brief guide to what you are up to with directions to the publications or vlogs for deep dives. Good Stuff. perhaps you can go into the 'why' a bit more in this series (eg. why you might run a full marathon length during a test .. why you favour T shirts over vest , fuel choices when not sponsored). 👍

All good advice. 2023 was my first Comrades too. All I would add is 'keep smiling'. In the second half of the race absolutely everyone is in pain but we're all suffering together. So don't complain, just keep smiling. It really does help.

Well done Kieran! How did your little toe hold up? I had an issue with mine degloving during the New Forest Marathon. It's on the mend and has been ok, but i haven't done a long run since- do you wrap your up before every run over a certain distance?
@Manvmiles3 ай бұрын
hi mate... sorry to hear you've suffered the same fate. It's not nice at all. This time out - and for the first time in a long time on a longer run over 7-8 hours - my toes were absolutely fine. I used a combo of silicone toe spacers worn at home to help get some more room between the blighters, then wrapped and taped the little toes on the day, used the UYN toe socks and chose the widest toe box shoes I could find (Brooks Hyperion Max 2). All of that worked on the day. I also just did the 5 Valleys Ultra without taping my toes but using the toe socks and ran for 8 hours without problems.

@@Manvmiles Nice one. I did buy some toe socks after New Forest, but I'll give the toe spacers a try too! Thanks!

@paintingXchips3 ай бұрын
@@Manvmiles that stew was amazing! Easily the hardest run of the year for me by some distance, and I only did 1/4 of it. Got lost at the bridge in Potsdam. But that gave me a great push to knock 30 mins off of my marathon pb in berlin this weekend. The Mauerweg also made me appreciate how big the wall was and seeing multiple people over 70 competing was so inspiring.

Lovely video mate. I was so happy to see you on the finisher results. Thanks for the encouraging words when I was struggling early in the day. What turned out to be an illness I'd likely caught a couple days before, combined with the pain in my foot which it seems might be a stress fracture (just don't say it out loud if you are superstitous 😂) put me out at Sportsplatz Teltow. Even with those setbacks I had a great day, and it was great to chat again. Now I'm just being patient, getting recovery going, ready for next year.

The last Comrades I competed in was 2015- a DNF, having finished it just between 2012 and 2014. Down run tips. On a down run (start in Pietermaritzburg), be prepared for a colder start, be aware of black refuse bags that were discarded by some runners. If you do have a long sweater and gloves, try to keep this on, or with you and give it to the children next to the road who will appreciate this. NEVER go fast on any downhill with a name ... Fields hill can kill you. But it is is also true for any other downhill. As you said, try to conserve energy in the first half of the race. Sunglasses would be especially helpful in the second part of the race. With water stations every 2km or so, it is VERY easy to "over hydrate" resulting in more "pit stops" which could cost you precious time. It is also very easy to consume a large amount of sugar in a very short space of time, so go in with a structured approach. Up run tips. A warmer start. The first half of the race is brutal. Conserve energy and pace yourself. Do NOT try to put "time in the bank" Know about the traditions in the race- a flower at Athur's seat etc, No matter, up or down- just keep going forward- if you do not feel ok another runner or supporter will support you - or drag you 🙂🙂- JUST KEEP GOING, make memories and meet new life time friends. The one hill that remains tough in either race is Inchanga Also there will be many busses i.e.: Sub9, 10, 11, 12- even though the driver of these busses are experienced, do not rely solely on them for time management, your mind can play mind games with you, especially after 65/70km. Buy a wristband at the expo with your expected times at certain km intervals to keep you in check. Any runner is special, you have made it to the start so well done. But if you see someone going for their back to back, their 10th, 20th run give a word of encouragement, thank the supporters next to the road, but also give thanks to the Volunteers.
