New Glenn can’t beat Falcon Heavy in mass to orbit, and both falcon 9 and heavy in cost per tonne to orbit. It will never beat Starship in mass nor cost ever. They will need New Armstrong for that, and we’ll need to see.

I wish Bezos and his team great success, I'm still a fan of SpaceX, but the space industry is big enough for a lot of competition. But they still need to overcome the problem of all the space debris orbiting the planet

New Glenn is more like a Super Heavy. On steroids. It can lift really LARGE items. Not just heavy. It was specifically designed with Gateway in mind. And other space stations. Starship will never go to Mars (except as a publicity stunt) Its not designed for this. What it is, is a really great truck (like the shuttle) for lifting things into orbit to BUILD the next mars mission.

When I interviewed at SpaceX they explained during the tour of the factory that they developed friction stir welding in house on their own. They specifically said they did NOT WANT any information from Lockheed and their method. They hired a metallurgist right out of college that knew nothing about welding and just figured it out.

SpaceX's way: everyone is free to work their own way and showcase their talents, as long as they create value. Shotwell herself revealed this. With Starship, SpaceX is doing so much on their own, developing materials, TPS, welding techniques... respect!

@cropcircle56933 күн бұрын
But you like the debris and lack of re usability we currently live with? People like you are the worst. Just because it isn't perfect by a few metrics you're gonna talk shit on something that has remarkable gains. Significantly less fuel and minimal waste produced and you're bothered that it isn't perfect.
@jagevt3 күн бұрын
You know what the debris is for a Starship launch? 2 million pounds of carbon dioxide, from a methame LOX reaction. The projectile for spinlunch is (guessing) at most 20,000 kg. Its metal, so of course you can reuse it. so thats not debris... Drilling down further, the debris you speak of is the polymer diaphragm that is ruptured at launch,. I'm guessing that weighs less than my body,. 100kg of ruptured nylon, or 2 million pounds of CO2 released into the atmosphere. tough call

Starship is not the standard to contrast Blue Origins ambition to 'catch up to' or 'beat' SpaceX. Starship is 100% R&D. The standard is hundreds of other launches, recoveries and payloads to orbit and even beyond. What BO is trying to do once SpaceX has been doing for years: Business as usual. I do hope BO is successful nonetheless, I assure you Musk would say the same.
@Q88M7 күн бұрын
yeah, I believe that even if BO somehow got to Mars before SpaceX (which definitely won’t happen), Musk would happily congratulate them.

Thanks for the engineering insights. The SpaceX Team seems to be the best in the world. Their low cost, high reliability to LEO and near perfect booster recovery sets the bar really high for any offshore challengers. Therefore there are plenty of wannabe competitors who would love to steal their technology. Sometimes transparency is a bad idea...

SpaceX loves doing their own research on everything. They’re more open than most companies, but if something’s secret, they won’t let it slip. Sometimes, I just want to sneak into their factory to see what they’re working on :))

Since they stated that a the goal was to land it first try, if it fails to do this it should be a failed launch and should result in the FAA grounding the rocket until the investigation is over like they did to the falcon 9. They tweeted that their goal is to do this meaning it’s a mission objective, which they would have failed to reach. Beyond the fact that space x hasn’t landed one on the first try because they over load and stress the rockets beyond their limits at the beginning to learn what they are capable of for the future and Blue Origin isn’t doing that…. I wouldn’t want to be on this or any other of New Glenn’s launches!
