For how much gear oil costs, I drain it completely by removing the bottom plug first, top plug second, let it drain then screw into the bottom hole and start pumping the oil in until it starts to come out the top hole and put the top plug in. Unscrew the pump and put the bottom plug in. You'll only loose a little oil.

Unscrew lower screw first then the upper. When filling keep the lower unit straight not tilted. Also after the oil get out of the top hole pinch off the hose and wait for for a few minutes. And then pump again. This gets most of the air out to fill in more oil. Not a important step on smaller engines but should be done on bigger ones 👍
@pracussmargo4 ай бұрын
Also change gaskets! ❤
@johnpesavent75434 ай бұрын
solid advice. why unscrew the top screw first?
@TheresOneOutdoors4 ай бұрын
which gaskets? @@pracussmargo
@pracussmargo4 ай бұрын
@@TheresOneOutdoors well this depends on the brand of engine. Im not very known with parts for other brands then yamaha but i think the gaskets for johnson tend to be transparent. You want to use new gaskets because the lower unit has to be able to withstand a certain inner pressure. With a bad gasket you could have it not leak when servicing but take in water when the engine is running. But then the oil will be white'ish because of water mixing with the oil. oil and water can mix if they are in a vacuum
@jarriouscoleman14654 ай бұрын
But why not just fill it from the top hole?
@pracussmargo4 ай бұрын
You could but you would need to have a hose inserted into the hole instead of threaded in for the pressure to escape. Both methods will work
@CarsonSkinner-fn5vz4 ай бұрын
Because that will leave air in there
@pracussmargo4 ай бұрын
@@CarsonSkinner-fn5vzif you fill with something that lets the pressure out and let the air bubbles come up then you absolutely can fill from the top. Think of filling transmisson oil on a car. Done from the top 👍we in the boat world usually fill from the bottom

Pretty sure this is your first boat. Gear lube is never topped off. Dump gear and refill from bottom. If it’s milky you have water in lube. Screw in from bottom hole and pump it full. This keeps air out. Do this every fall if you live in the north were the motor will be in freezing conditions. 🎉 happy boating.

Thank you Matthew. Multiple people let us know we screwed that up. We've redone it. And yes, this is definitely my first boat. Good to work out the kinks before I get something nicer. Happy Boating.

Update Fall 2023 - We took the mirrorcraft and these oars to Northern Minnesota for a camping weekend. The oars were perfect for navigating shallow water and allowing us to push off from our campsite. We barely use the oars because the main motor and the trolling motor work so well, but I'm glad we had them for this trip.
