Getting an Old 15 HP Evinrude 2-Stroke Started - Boat Prep Part 2

You should have replaced all of the gear case oil. It gets filled from the bottom until it just spills out the top hole. But nice work. I have a boat just like it.

Yes, replace all the gear oil. This is not like adding oil to a 4 cycle crankcase, that is not below the waterline. So it would be best to check for water coming out of the drain plug under the oil before you ever launch the boat and run the motor. We all know water in the gearcase is a curse upon the non rustproof gears in the gearcase. Most likely if your oil level was down a bit, it has been pushed out past worn seals or leaking gaskets, and also water could then seep into the gearcase when the motor was not running. Hopefully if there was water in there you can do a reseal job on it before any rusting gets started. I lucked out that way with resealing my 30 horse Johnson that had water in the gear oil, making a milky looking liquid that had lain in the bottom of the gearcase until I drained it. Thats rather odd, also, that oil floats on water even though it is much thicker than water. 😳 I was shown step by step exactly how to do the gearcase reseal job here on youtube by an outboard savvy fellow with screen name of "OM Fishing", in a 4 part video that started out titled something like "30 Horse Evinrude". It may be that the gearcase in yours is like his and mine & those videos would be helpful for you, they were vital for me. I have a repair manual covering my year, horsepower and brand motor, but my motor isnt exactly like the 30 horse one pictured there. OM Fishing's motor was just like mine even though his is Evinride, mine is Johnson.

I took my boat out a couple weeks ago and drained all of the gear case oil as you recommended. It was nearly black. I topped it off with fresh oil and it started on the third pull. Thanks for your tip and comment!

@@TheresOneOutdoors It's good to know that your oil was almost black, but was there any water at all that came out at first when you drained the old oil? Ive seen that if there is water in the gearcase it will look milky light brown when its been agitated by the gears when the motor is ran. But im thinking that after the motor sits idle several months the water would eventually settle to the bottom of the gearcase over time & the oil would be dark again....

Hey guys, very happy for you getting your new boat. I had a nice bass boat, used it for years, did the tournament thing, it was fun but something was missing… it started being more like a job than the love for fishing, I recently sold my bass boat and bought a nice 16’ Smokercraft (used) with a 9hp 4 stroke motor, So excited to get out and troll for walleye or whatever!!! Have not been this excited about fishing for quite a few years. Not all about the best toys on the block, just the Love for what you enjoy doing!! Tight Lines Boy’s

Pretty sure this is your first boat. Gear lube is never topped off. Dump gear and refill from bottom. If it’s milky you have water in lube. Screw in from bottom hole and pump it full. This keeps air out. Do this every fall if you live in the north were the motor will be in freezing conditions. 🎉 happy boating.

For how much gear oil costs, I drain it completely by removing the bottom plug first, top plug second, let it drain then screw into the bottom hole and start pumping the oil in until it starts to come out the top hole and put the top plug in. Unscrew the pump and put the bottom plug in. You'll only loose a little oil.

You guys should have done some poking around on KZbin, your boat would run and look better. I have the same boat and motor. Both are excellent. A good running 15 will get 2 guys and gear up on plane.

Thanks Ken. We're kind of winging it and learning as we go, hopefully to prevent someone from making the same mistakes as us. I can say that after one summer, the boat and motor as far exceeded expectations.

Came here hoping to get decent information on getting the same motor running and I was slightly disappointed. Thought maybe you would talk about the carburetor or spark or something I could use. I can't find a manual anywhere. Guess I'll just wing it like you guys lol.

These seats are junk. I'd recommend something quality. I need the lower seat in the back to be able to operate the boat. Planning on getting rid of the front seat and making a casting deck. Soon 🙂

What year is this outboard?

I'm not 100% sure. The boat is from 1979, so I'd guess the outboard is the same year. Still runs like a clock!

Full gear oil from the bottom not the top. It will never fill up completely from the top brother.

I also don’t see any life jackets. There a must. Pretty sure there a law in all 50 states. Check with your local laws on other equipment you must carry😮
