Jon- thanks so much for doing these videos. I own a Super Petrel and your videos are like ongoing instruction for me. I do video production, and know how long it takes to do these-- so THANKS!

Certainly enjoy the insert screen of the wing camera; is there a way to insert a screen of your PFD? 😊
@jonbeardphoto5 ай бұрын
Hmm... Let me say possibly. I have an idea that might work and will try it next time I'm out there and see if it works. :)

Hello Jon Beard.. Congratulations on having this beautiful rufous pair take residence in your nest box and the 1st egg laid! Thanks for this video. Looks like she gets ready to lay the egg at 21:00:14 and lays it at 21:00:45. 🙂

Hmm.. Squirrel entered the nest, a blur of activity, the Squirrel leaves, then the Owl leaves. Darn Squirrel.
@jonbeardphoto11 ай бұрын
No kidding! Super annoying... We've seen that twice now. The owl came back about two weeks after the first one. Hopeful they come back after this most recent one too. I'm going to be putting acrylic sheets on the roof and exterior sides this weekend (assuming the house is empty) to try to prevent squirrels from being able to climb on it.

Ahh, to slippery for Squirrels to climb on. Hope it works out for you. :) @@jonbeardphoto

Can you explain the training process for me, Can i train in my own petrel ? Can i optain a seaplane rating in my own petrel ?

Hi Jon, I'm just south of Sav. ga. Been wanting a petrel for sometime now. Do you do any training ?
@jonbeardphoto Жыл бұрын
Hello! Going to try to answer all your questions in this one spot. We mostly fly in the Roanoke, VA area. Yes, you can do your flight training and take a checkride in your own aircraft. There are a number of different ways that training could go depending on if you're already a pilot and just adding on seaplane compared to getting your initial certificate (and it can also vary depending on the level of certificate you're going for - Light Sport, Private, Commercial). I'd recommend getting in touch with the folks at SuperPetrelUSA.com (they're the US headquarters). They'll be able to answer questions specific to your situation and give you some training options that may be closer to you. I hope that helps!

Does the terrain warning sound on every water landing?
@jonbeardphoto Жыл бұрын
When enabled (which it is by default) it does, yes. After flying the SP for a while, I found I didn't like the idea of getting used to ignoring/disregarding those warnings or the distraction of acknowledging the warning to make the noise stop. What you'll see in more recent videos is I disable the terrain warning system prior to descending for water work and turn it back on as part of the post water work check.

Where did you beach?
@jonbeardphoto Жыл бұрын
Hello! I had initially planned on using the swimming beach area, but changed my mind when I got there (and I can't remember why now). Ended up using an open area near the beach that looked like other boats had pulled up there previously.
@bluskytrvlr Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I have only beached at the island which is a great spot. But i would like to find a place on the shore as well. I will look near the swimming area.

Sorry about that. OBS keeps crashing (or like a partial crash, because it's still keeping the stream connected but isn't actually updating). I try to check it a couple times a day and restart if necessary. Hopefully I'll have some time to fully troubleshoot and get it stable soon. Definitely before nesting season!

Any idea why it’s so low? I was there this morning and it seems it’s about 20 feet low
@jonbeardphoto Жыл бұрын
I don't know about Moomaw specifically, but in general, this is the time of year when bodies of water like this are lowered on purpose to allow for shoreline/dam maintenance and to make room for winter/spring precipitation. Edit: I did a little looking and found this from the VDWR website: "Lake Moomaw is the second largest impoundment in western Virginia. It covers 2,530 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 152 feet. The impoundment is “drawn down” between 10-15 feet annually, beginning slowly in June and reaching its lowest level usually by September."

Thats phenomenal content - thanks for taking us along. What is your experience as an aviator (where/how did you learn to fly, how long have you been doing it, etc.)?
@jonbeardphoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I started flying in the 90s. Learned up here in the mountains of VA and in FL. Worked as a charter pilot for a long time, mostly eastern half of the US. Personal pilot for a number of aircraft owners. Always found time to work as a flight instructor along the way, as it's what I like most.

I was flying in that haze today in VA too out of Shannon KEZF. 4-5SM visibility and engine performance was a little off. VFR student solo never been in anything that thick before lol

Very relaxing, though I always worry a bit you will dip your wingtip and cartwheel when you bank so low... Hard to judge your actual altitude over water from the video! :)
@jonbeardphoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the concern! I'm much higher above the water and banking way less than the GoPro makes it look. Risk management/mitigation and safety of flight are always top priorities, especially when getting close to the surface. :)
