In the MD-80, is it like in Boeings that the autothrottle moves the levers on its own?

i love this plane so much, it is the only airplane that you can seat in very quite up front and very noisy at the back... i used to fly first in the business class where it is very quite then take the ride back in the very back of the plane where weirdly it is the perfect place to fall a sleep.

it has detents for those positions, so you shouldnt dial a flap position for them
@KuostA
@KuostA 5 ай бұрын
@@haitiano1982 what is the purpose of using this dial to set flaps versus the actual flap detents available that are normally used on every other aircraft in the world?

Because of the slats. On the MD-80, at 0° to 13° of flaps, the slats are in the MID/SEALED position. At 15° and beyond of flaps, the slats are in the fully EXTENDED position. Between 13° and 15° of flaps, the slats wouldn’t be properly seated in either position.

@@KuostA This was actually pretty ingenious design by McDonnell Douglas. For the MD-80 (as well as the MD-90, MD-11, and MD-95/Boeing 717) the flap takeoff selector thumb wheel (a.k.a. “dial-a-flap”) was designed so that optimum takeoff trailing-edge flaps could be calculated and selected for any runway and environment. Flaps help generate lift; however, they also create drag. The drag created by the flaps can degrade takeoff and climb performance, especially at higher altitudes and higher temperatures. Thus, this feature allows flight crews to select only the amount of flaps that they absolutely need for a given takeoff. However, as I understand it, most MD-80 crews used the standard 11° or 15° detents.

All of that yoke movement... could be called "Being ONE with your plane." I'm sure that he has flown this plane many times and is unaware of the movements, he's focused on keeping that plane down the center line. And he does an excellent job! Follow this link and watch a slightly more modern airplane (747-400) landing in Alaska in extremely turbulent weather under ILS and the pilot takes over at about 500 feet to finish the landing. He too does an amazingly cool, calm, landing. Warning.. Hold on to your drink! kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWOUgJ2qlL5jZ6cfeature=shared

Hatiano - 1st of all - love your videos - in particular the MD80 ones.Cannot get enough :) - Not sure if you are still monitoring the channel but If I may ask a question : I noticed the captain (you?) was manually forcing the throttles despite the atho throttles not being in CLMP mode. Was the A/T on the MD80 not fully reliable? - and am guessing no VNAV on this aircaft. Thanks again - Lucky to still have a few continue to fly here in the US.

Hey whatsup. I do monitor frm time to time. Yeah i was forcing it, i think they call it override it. The a/t was very reliable but as a pilot you can anticipate a little on when its gonna power up and what you u see me doing was me making that transition to where the a/t would react a lot smoother. So basically im reacting prior to the a/t and it translates to a smoother ride for the pax. Wasn’t required though
