Hi. Thank you for the videos. We have had Chilly, our (rescue) 3 yr old lab mix for a year. No training before then. She is very reactive under a few circumstances. One of them is when someone is practicing pickle ball strokes against a wall, indoors or out. She immediately become agitated and loudly barks. So hard to reward her w treats is she is already showing that behavior. I bring this up because all my queries for reactivity address my dog while on a leash. Her other triggers: when ever people or vehicles appear on the boat ramp property next door, or in our driveway (alerting us, fine but it’s over the edge. ) My suddenly running to the kitchen (burning the toast!), raised voices between my husband and me (it happens) , and most concerning, freaking out when a kid younger than 6 is present. (We must lock her in the bedroom when Littles visit which is not often) and any kid running in the yard. I list these becauseI haven’t seen a video addressing stuff like that. Ps she is doing great with your leave it method and I am following the not jumping steps currently.

My 5 month basset is doing very well with your videos. I am doing okay with them. We started working on stay today and she is a little confused or maybe I am confused with the release command. We have been working quite a bit with leave it where I also throw a treat. Any advice? And thanks for all the time you spend making these videos. They are a treasure!

I tried this with my GSD. We had a great time training! We've had 3 other trainers so far in his 4 years of life. I felt hopeless with our progress. We were taught to use the e-collar and prong collar. I've learned these tools are not effective for us. I was not learning how to actually work with my dog, which is what I wanted all along. I've been researching force free training for some time now and found this best aligns with what I want to implement into our training. So far we are both much happier. Thank you for your time and sharing your passion for dogs! We both wish we would have found you from the beginning.

@happyhoundsdogtraining6 күн бұрын
I find with that it's usually that the treat & nose are too far apart during the luring! Try keeping them closer. Also, make sure you move the treat backwards towards your dogs shoulder, then out to the side away from the dog. Helps them tip when they're slightly looking backwards 😊

Would this work on 2 dogs? I have 7 months old golden and their jumping is literally mauling us. Should I train them separately? What about when they together?
@happyhoundsdogtraining6 күн бұрын
I always suggest training separately until both are semi proficient, then combining them for training sessions. I show a bit of Louie's brother Diesel in this jumping video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoPToHxnl9-rr9E and talk about it further, but mainly I suggest working with them 1:1 so that you can time each dogs reward properly. It sounds like more work doing separate sessions, but the results actually happen faster. Plus with large dogs, being accosted by two of them hurts 😂

Thank you for this! I feel like such a failure. My dog lunges, cries, gets up on his hind legs, freezes..etc..I cannot move him. He's pulled me down even. I'm going to work harder on the loose leash walks. I now realize I need to use a longer lead, not shorter. My question is.... should I be concerned about weight gain using so many treats? I do make his meals smaller, but it seems like this is adding a huge amount of extra calories?
@happyhoundsdogtraining6 күн бұрын
I know how hard and frustrating it can be, but your dogs behaviour is not a reflection of your failure or inadequacy ♥ Reactivity is really hard for both the dog AND human! If you haven't watched it yet, I'd also suggest checking out this video: 6 Things You NEED To Know for REACTIVITY Training kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWLdmYSvn5tooas As for the treats and weight gain, yes and no. I suggest rewarding lavishly during the early stages of training, but then phasing down treats quickly. I also suggest using tiny, tiny pieces. And during that training stage I'll definitely cut down on meal size too!

I'm hoping this training technique will help my Labx with chasing leaves too. They blow in the wind and roll along the road or sidewalk and certainly imitate prey. But we are still working on "leave it" so this will have to be next.

What's the next step - to teach the dog to settle on cue? Do you have a part 2 that explains that?
@happyhoundsdogtraining6 күн бұрын
I always prefer building things as default/non-cued behaviours as much as possible because I hate micromanaging, but I'd say cued step 2 would be teaching a long duration stay. I have a tutorial for that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npPWaKyvpqtliNE

I love that LEGS book by Kim Brophey! The one that resonated with me most is that we are our dog’s whole life. That matters so much and having a dog, just like having a child, is optional so if we choose to bring one into our lives it is our duty to give them the best life possible in every way.

Just found this channel, and I really love your content. I'm currently trying out your loose leash tips. I have an 8 month old GSD who was quite reactive to people, especially men in dark clothes or in low light, and people walking without a dog. We did this kind of reactivity training, and over time, she has become less reactive to people and more friendly/indifferent towards them. She also loves playing with other dogs and is very reactive to them, so we're still working on that! She's definitely better than she was when we started out. It just takes time and patience. I would advise anyone with a reactive dog to just stick at it. You'll get there eventually.

I noticed with the leash training that your dogs walk ahead of you. I thought they should always heel or walk behind which is what Ive been trying to teach my dog...with great difficulty!!! Is this not necessary?
@happyhoundsdogtraining6 күн бұрын
I LOVE this question! Every month I answer a question in depth in my email newsletter (happyhounds.myflodesk.com/ay4b727lyn) and am going to anonymously use this one in Feb because I bet it's something a lot of people wonder about 😊 To answer a little more briefly here: No, they definitely shouldn't always walk in heel, especially if working on reactivity. The whole "the dog shouldn't be in front" thing came from dominance theory which has been completely debunked. Also, when a dog is in a strict heel, they essentially aren't getting to be a dog! Our main sense is sight, but theirs is smell. Imagine going for a walk with your eyes closed? It wouldn't be nearly as fun. If we keep a dog in a heel and never let them sniff, they don't get to use their main sense and enjoy the walk. This is an extra problem with reactive dogs because sniffing technically helps relax them, which is something they need more of. Dogs also naturally walk differently than us (fast movement, then full stops), so if they're in heel they're forced to walk like us (steady pace, straight line) which is also less enjoyable. I do teach dogs to heel and use it in situations like a busy sidewalk, but the vast majority of the time I use loose leash walking (the dog can go wherever they want on leash as long as there isn't leash tension).

Great tips! I'm in canada too and me and my dog are both not very cold-resistant lol so leash manners are not our top priority in winter, we do more off-leash walks in the woods instead. In the spring though I definitely have to go back a few steps for a nice normal walk which can be frustrating. Will try the pouches though and add some heated gloves to my wish-list!
