its cool to see others use the same techniques with wire inlays. I do the same with leather when wrapping sword handles. Its a bare sometimes but worth it.

5:35 being metric has nothing to do with being bad quality, just saying. 😂
@mythimpressions14 күн бұрын
Oh, of course. I was just saying since it was made overseas, it's metric. Since the rest of the world has pretty much adopted it as a standard and the US is sadly lagging behind, a lot of the parts in hardware stores are still standard and it can be hard to find some metric parts without having to order them and wait. The quality comment was more towards the machine being from Harbor Freight which mostly has cheap imported items that aim for "good enough" over "good quality". The tubing bender is "good enough" for what I used it for, but I still lament a few things about it I wish had better tolerances.

I was trying to make the parts so they could print without supports, so it's a matter of print orientation. I usually preslice in the design for more control and precision. What I had for the prototype works OK, but I'm changing some things up. :)

Just for reference, IVAN sells an actual belt roller for only $400, which is cheaper than the cost of your base parts, nevermind the 3dprinting.
@mythimpressions15 күн бұрын
Sure, there's tons of inexpensive imports out there with hit and miss quality. But I think you're missing the point on the 3D printing. If you buy a belt roller from anyone, you're stuck with the designs that are available to fit that roller. Most brands only have a few designs (usually sold separately). They are typically mainstream "western" themed and everyone else who has that machine makes the same belts. The whole point of making my own embossing roller was to allow me to print my own designs. Custom metal rollers for the commercial machines can be hundreds to have made. If the design ends up not being popular, you're stuck with it. I can print a design roller for under $5. The parts for my machine may be about the same as the cheap import machines, but the savings is huge for custom design wheels. But I designed the embossing sleeves to be large to better spread out the pressure on the 3D print. They wouldn't work on the belt roller machines out there that use much smaller wheels.
@mml31409 күн бұрын
@@mythimpressions What's the cost of the kit? Interested because it's larger. But in theory you can just spec the 3d file to Ivans and have custom ones as well. The advantage here is that it's large and note potential designs. I'm assuming you include either a spec or stl so we can make our own patterns ?
@mythimpressions8 күн бұрын
@@mml3140 The estimate from the machine shop was $250/kit but I'm waiting on an exact quote. I'll be running a Kickstarter based on the quote price and will be including the 2 machined parts as well as the STL files for the blank sleeve to fit the machined drive wheel, feed ramps, and knob to tighten the drive wheel for embossing. So yes, you could have a sleeve custom machined with your design based on the STL instead of 3D printing it. The cost to have it machined would be a lot higher than printing your own, but a machined sleeve from delrin or brass could have a lot more detail than a 3D printed one.

Excellent application of a 3d printer to give the tubing roller a secondary purpose of embossing. I’ve stored the idea in the old brain cell memory bank for future reference should I ever need to start embossing anything. 🤔 👍👍

So lately I've been trying to make walking sticks and fighting sticks some of which I have put a spiral in with a round file. Now mind you I'm mostly blind but I also have a big fear of accidentally removing stain when sanding in between polycrylic coats yeah I want to remove any rough spots any tips or should I just apply my coats of polycrylic and polish it smooth later I know that technically I'm supposed to sand in between coats it's very easy to remove the polycrylic and the stain even with very very light sanding.

If you need extra tanine in any kind of wood you can buy tanine and apply it to any wood you wann ebonize then after it dries out a bit apply solution interchangeably to make it black. This procedure is man made. There is also original procedure for doing it but that procedure takes a lot of time. One example of original ebonization is bog oak or any kind of wood that doesn't have to be oak dug out from bog. What happens in bog is simple. You have a lot of tanine that dissolved from pieces of oak or and kind of wood rich with tanine, you also have iron acetate in bog water. Iron acetate which is reddish reacts with tanine and as result wood ebonizes and turns black over period of centuries and since there is no air after so long wood pulled out from bog needs to be stabilized or it will fall appart.

If the stamp is still a bit soft and deforms upon work load you might try annealing post print. Or put a thin even layer of uv rez to stiffin up the surface.
@mythimpressionsАй бұрын
I haven't tried annealing cuse it seemed like a time consuming process and I wasn't sure if it would affect the final dimensions. But I did consider using resin to reinforce the print or going to a stronger filament if needed. But so far everything has worked great right off the printer with no need to strengthen it.
@gregcole203019 күн бұрын
@@mythimpressions if you are going to use a resin to reinforce the print you should take care to use a very low viscosity resin. XTC-3D is a resin specifically for coating 3D prints while maintaining geometry. I have had success with it.

about 8 years ago I bought a 3D printer with the idea of doing stamps for embossing leather, it took me a bit to figure out how to do it but I got it working in a few months. I have always tough about doing something like this to emboss leather (I saw the professional machines) but I just never could figure out a proper way or how to make a machine to use like this, using a tubing roller is genius. Thank you for the ideas and knowledge, I now make my most used stamps with CNC machine out of brass or Delrin (industrial plastic), I bet someone with a CNC lathe can make the stamps like this as well.
@mythimpressionsАй бұрын
When I was talking to my friend that has a machine shop, I was explaining what I was trying to build and showed some rough sketches. It was his suggestion it would be cheaper to buy something similar and just have a few parts made to alter it. Turns out the tubing roller was almost exactly what I was showing him and alterations would be minimal. But yeah, if I had a CNC machine of my own it would be awesome and much cheaper to make the parts, but the machine itself would be a bit pricey for me. You can pay for custom machined embossing wheels and stamps, but they are super expensive and the whole point of my project was to make my own designs on the cheap. The 3D printer was about $650 and took a bit of time to learn the programs, but still cheaper than a CNC machine. Also its super versatile, and filament is cheap. My sales are pretty low volume, so this method ends up being much more cost effective for me. But if you already have a CNC machine, you could totally make your own conversion kit as well as the embossing sleeves from more durable materials. Would be cool to see.
@gustavozwАй бұрын
@@mythimpressions that is true, I got a CNC because I saw an opportunity for a different business venture, and quickly realized it can be used for my leather working. Another avenue I've seen people use is stamps out of acrylic made with a laser, lasers have come down in price drastically in the past few years so that might be something as well.
@mythimpressionsАй бұрын
Yeah, a laser has been on my list too, but ended up going with the 3D printer first (much cheaper). It was a tough choice. I'm glad I got the printer or I never would have been able to do the wheels, but I still want the laser to do a few complicated cut designs for leather as well as making some other things. But now as I'm starting to need parts as they wear out on my printer, I'm torn between a new 1 (eyeing a Bambu P1S) or a laser from Atomstacks. It never ends...but I'm running out of workshop space...LOL

Agreed, beech is a great workhorse wood. I've found a couple of things to consider when using beech though: 1) The surface does not take dyes and some stains (although pigment pens and paint pens work well) 2) It is very hard (tough) when turning into the end grain and blunts tools fairly quickly. Nice wand.
@mythimpressions2 ай бұрын
Right!?! Just seemed to be a great foundation for all kinds of projects, not super exciting but decent at several things. Since I don't really use wood stains, I can't speak to how well it works with them so it's good to know. It seemed to have no problem absorbing the ebonizer (even though the reaction was average), so I bet water and alcohol based fluids would work well in general. And while the grain and color were fairly simple, it was a bit more exciting than alder IMO. But since making wands rarely required turning across the grain, I had no idea it was challenging. Another good thing to know. But I can think of a lot of other woods I'd not want to turn into the grain...Katalox, Bloodwood, Tigerwood...so dense. But yeah, Beech is a fun wood. Look forward to playing with it more. Thanks for watching and for the input on the wood!
