The Mercedes drivers had been told to not follow other drivers too closely, but what racing driver is ever going to listen to an instruction like that?

Imagine *THE FACES OF LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE THERE* . Imagine (as a driver) being said "Audi is on box for a gearbox swap, we're 8 laps down, PUSH, PUSH, PUSH!!!!", to later, just 4 or 5 minutes later answer to your team principal "HOW?! *THEY JUST CAME OUT FROM BOXES???!!!!* " Also: Watch that video with this OST from GRID, it really makes it even better xD

Still the best LeMans race ever. Shame the blown tires ruined Toyota's chance to win.

they know ho to design a car that can have it's gearbox changed in 5 minutes and road cars need 7 hours to change the clutch.

Rewatching this race remembered me how big Peugeot fan I was as a kid. Not only result disappointed me, but even more that they scrapped Hybrid4 for next year, where maybe they would have even better shot than that year.

Interesting to see that they describe 3.37.as a really fast lap time. By 2010 they were doing 19's. Aero I think.
@marks7197
@marks7197 6 ай бұрын
It was purely down to the regulations at the time. The Pole lap in 1992 was around 3:21. The ACO dictate how fast they want the lap times effectively, so you can't compare like for like.

mercedes also didnt have louverers over the front wheels, allowed high pressure air to build up in the wheel wells, probably done to reduce drag but add that to all the other issues (wheelbase & overhang + incorrect suspension settings) culmunated in disaster, sad really as it was a beautiful car and wicked fast.

I love the look on the Audi teams faces at the end. See American or British teams would be smiling dancing etc we did a change in under 5 minutes new record wow we just changed racing forever etc etc they’d be chanting it screaming about it popping Champagne you name it. What do the Germans do? Immediately hold a serious meeting right then and there where the swap took place looking over their stop watches asking why it took so long and where and why they got bogged down. Then talking about how to improve it so it never happens again and threatening to fire the guy if he takes 2.84 seconds longer like that ever again. Seriously tho not one smile or high five or pat on the back. They really did probably think they were slow. This is another example of how Audi changed racing forever especially the Le Mans 24 hour. The Le Mans timeline should go raced started 1923 didn’t run for several years during ww2 Mercedes had worst car wreck in history and Audi changed the Le Mans 24 hour and all racing especially endurance racing forever in 2000. They proved they could push hard all 24 hours like a sprint race instead of endurance and if something broke it would only take minutes to fix. They changed the game. This is why their road cars are the way they are this is why German cars are the best. Hopefully they never change and never forget that!

43:30-31. It turns out that Mercedes put more downforce in the CLR by stiffening the rear suspension too much creating the condition which caused it to go airborne. There are a few really good videos online that examine the reason why the car was prone to catching air and flipping. Thankfully, Weber and Dumbreck weren't hurt...
