@douglaswesson24582 ай бұрын
@MichaelGrecoGuitar , no doubt. I'm leaning more towards the semi hollow. Mostly because of the versatility. But I'm still a rookie. I had a 5657 Electromatic Jr block. I ended up selling it because the neck was way too skinny and the guitar in general just didn't feel all that good to me. Prehaps because I'm a rookie. But I did fall in love with the Gretch sound, the control knob functions and the versatility of the semi hollow guitar in general. Because I was a beginner then, I went back to my Yamaha FGX5 that I'm more comfortable on. With all that said, the Siren capacity of the Electromatics keeps calling to me. The 5420's currently have my attention I thought the Guild Starfire sounded pretty close to the Gretch sound.

thanks for the video and I'm trying to learn these as I am wanting to decide what to purchase but I see those tuning pegs are cream? I thought Tribute was cream and Studio was chrome tuners? And its my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, that the Tribute has maple neck and Studio has Mahogany ? I would prefer harder wood for neck. Lastly , how does anyone feel about tuning locks on these? Sorry to ask so many questions.

Heavy gauge strings on a deep bowl Ovation always sound great.. but yikes!.. their high string tension on any Ovation-- especially a 40+ year old one-- makes me shiver since a lifting bridge is ultimately inevitable, or to come clean off, as is a soon belly bulge below the bridge. Just the nature of the Ovation beast under high tension. Proceed with caution. But yeah.. congrats for a great snag on your '81 Balladeer! I have an '81 1112 Custom Balladeer myself. Bought it new and still love it. I have a few other Ovation Balladeers, but that one stands quite high above them. 1981 was also the first year of Ovation's K-bar truss rod.

Really great playing! I think there is still something wonky with that bridge pickup. On it's own, it should sound a lot brighter - more trebley than the middle or neck switch position, but it doesn't. Also, the middle switch position sounds a bit "quacky" which is another tip off that wiring is suspect, probably out of phase. But on that neck pickup...you got it happening, for darn sure!

I didn’t love the Filtertron pickups. Upgraded to TV Jones Classic. It’s a guitar I’ll keep for life. Sounds and feels fantastic. I love the middle position and playing with the volume balances between the pickups. It’s just great for hard rock, country, blues. Neck pickup with a Tubescreamer pedal has incredible tone. Nice playing! Perfect tone. In 2002, I bought a one year old L4-CES in wine red. It has the same cutaway as a 175, but ebony fretboard, solid spruce top, and fancy gold everywhere. It felt and plays and sounds like a 175 with flat wound 12s. Love it. But a few weeks ago I saw a 1952 ES-175 with a single P90 pickup and I played it feel in love. It followed me home. Now that guitar doesn’t sound like my L4-CES or your ES-175. It’s a whole different animal. It sends me back to Bluenote and CTI vinyl days.
