Greetings from Sweden, awesome project, very impressive work so far! I was very suprised to hear some Swedish music by "Dina ögon" when you painted the brake shields :) Maybe it doesn´t matter by I think you might installed the hardware for the shock absorbers in the opposite direction from how they were mounted, just a friendly observation :) Keep up the good work!

How much did you pay for all the new tools? It would be cool to see and make people appreciate even more all it takes to restore an older car with this level of care
@sansberlin
@sansberlin 3 күн бұрын
I was actually planning to make a video along the lines of "how much my restoration cost" or "what it takes to DIY a car restoration". It's costed me quite a bit upfront, but in the end youtube has paid for it all, so at this point its a "free" restoration

Man...this is SUCH a beautiful project! I hope you're enjoying yourself at least as much as we, your audience, are! You have a keen sense of what to replace and what to repair. Excellent. From where I'm sitting, sandblasting is the most satisfying thing to watch! I hope you got all the sand of every crevice on YOUR person, too...🤣 You're a braver man than I!🤣 I don't think I caught it... Is this a Corolla with the 4-speed stick or a 5-speed? I'm guessing 4-speed since you find the car somewhat high-geared for the open road. And...it's a '72...my fuzzy childhood memories swear blind that Toyota made really shouty TV adverts for 5-speeds in about the '73-'74 time frame. My Dad had a '76 with the 5-speed. (Sigh...) The speeds on O'ahu's roads were...and are...rather pokey, so we could've got away with a 4-speed in our case. The long open roads of Canada demand better, though, I would assume. Is it easier to "simply" find an overdrive Aisin 5-speed or is obtaining numerically lower ratios for your differential easier? I'm sure whatever you chose will be good, though. Perhaps preserving the original 4-speed with its specific character is the way to go here; you are the one who's gonna drive it, after all. Wishing you MUCH continued progress with a big dollop of good luck on top! Aloha!
@sansberlin
@sansberlin 3 күн бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! And yes, the sand gets everywhere on my person too..... The corolla is a 5 speed, but for canadian highways, its still quite loud. I heard from Mike Muniz, the corolla godfather, that he changed his final drive. I'll figure it out down the road. For now, i'll just get the car back together

Next time when sandblasting something with holes or cavities you don't want medium to get into, stuff the holes with newspaper or rags and THEN seal them with tape. And perhaps consider using less porus of tape, but that's just me spitballing. This is good advice for when painting parts as well.

when reinstalling shafts with seals its good to put a little bit of oil on the seal to help it seat properly. like an oil filter change. If you did that, great. i like seeing people take on projects even if they don’t know 100% what they’re doing, that’s how you learn! (hard lessons sometimes lol)
