A small helping tip, try using a shop light but (led) so it's not putting off heat and set it in your pottery could help with judging thickness in the clay

What a wonderful job. I am from Colombia, South America. Our local porcelain has exactly the same characteristics. It is very difficult to make objects with thin walls on the wheel. I congratulate you. To give transparencies I mix it with paper pulp.

Could you try using a marker to sketch onto the piece? The soft tip shouldn't dent the piece, and the marks should burn away in the kiln, if there's even any left after carving.

Hi! I am a very beginner potter and have been watching tons of videos to learn and educate myself before I decide to start my own home studio. Just wondering why most potters don’t share where they get their clay and glazes from? Is it because they make it themselves. Love the process of this video! I have much to learn from you🫶🏼
@janicerohrssen
@janicerohrssen 2 ай бұрын
Yay!! Welcome to the unending world of pottery! I think for glazes, yes. Most potters and studios have special glaze recipes, and they only work for their specific kilns. At least in my Taiwan studio, you can't get the results we get without our specific kiln and kiln firing schedule (the specific heat curve of the firing), so it's usually not worth sharing a glaze recipe. As for clay, I think most potters use whatever is in their local studios, so they've never had to think about what to buy. @FlorianGadsby does share, if you don't follow him already. And for myself, I find that different regions of the world use different clays, so it's best to find someone local to you to get clay recs from. Hope that helps!!

Must have been a lot of pressure to finally work on the one thing you anticipated through your career. I love how they turned out, back in middle school i loved to use those types of glazes as well, the cracks and greenish tint been so lovely. Kinda sad i haven't been able to continue pursuing this craft as a hobby. And to see how the chef appreciates those plates must have been a dream come true. Dont get me wrong, but I am glad you ditched the first design, I think the flopped ones had a lot of character, but the intended look seemed off to me, in my opinon they would have looked interesting in a different setting but took too much away from the possible presentation of the food itself. As my passion in life is cooking myself, I plan to commission an artist for a custom small set of plates in the future too. Pottery is such an under appreciated craft IMO

Amazing!! It's great to see you still pursuing creative hobbies through cooking, if not through pottery. And very interesting, that you thought that the "egg bowls" would have stood out too much. I can't wait to see the work you commission and the food you prep in it!

@@janicerohrssen Since pursuing Academia in STEM, the time for creative hobbies unfortunately is rather small, although I was able to work on a four figure costume commission before, which definitely was a very fulfilling experience to hand out to the commissioner. I hope once I'm done with my degree, I'll be able to get back into creative work too! And regarding the "egg bowls" I think it just comes down to personal preference, like with art in general. Probably, some Chef would have definitely been able to use them in a way where I wouldn't feel like they stood out too much, it's just that I personally wouldn't know how, as it is hard to imagine what an artist might envision working with these. While the "egg bowls" seem like more "elegant" to me, in my opinion your final work has a more ...relaxed character in my eyes Curious with what you come up next in future videos!

Congrats on your finished product, it is very beautiful and I can hear in your voice real commitment to achieve success in your vision and such joy to see it all work out. Well done. I have a question, I'm not a potter but enjoy watching, would the pedals be able to be taped over prior the glaze dunk (possibly leaving those areas thinner and maybe more leaf like) or would that make for an unstable item in the kiln?
@janicerohrssen
@janicerohrssen 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, great question. It is definitely possible, and while I'm not certain, my suspicion is that it wouldn't affect the stability when firing. I don't know that I'd personally love the look, though - because those parts would be very matte compared to the rest of the piece. Interesting potential experiment, though!

Hey Janice, I'm just getting into pottery but I wanted to ask, don't we have to ensure that the side walls of any piece are thick enough so they won't break or crack in the kiln when firing? How do you ensure that this won't happen when making the walls so thin like this, or when carving out a design? Also, if I decide to cut a design through the side walls so there are holes that go through the piece, when firing it, how do I make sure it doesn't crack/break?
@janicerohrssen
@janicerohrssen 2 ай бұрын
Great questions! Usually, cracking has more to do with uneven drying than thickness of walls. And thinner walls are less likely to have uneven drying than thicker ones. The greater fear with thinner walls is warping and collapsing when firing. It mostly depends on the clay and the kiln. If you're firing to Cone 5/6 (lower temps than 9/10), thinner walls are less like to have issues. Different clays, with different amounts of grog, also have different properties when it comes to firing (eg. how much they shrink, etc). If you start with a good beginner clay (like white stoneware that has some grog in it), you'll have fewer problems in firing and can learn how to use clay well. Then you can experiment with clays that are a bit more temperamental, like porcelain. If you need help finding a good beginner clay body, you can ask your local studio or your local clay store and they should have a good recommendation. As for carving, as long as your piece is thick enough (I'd estimate ~5-7mm before firing?), it should be totally fine when firing. Hope that helps!
