I hope they someday come with electric shifting, wireless if possible. It would be easier to convert from 4 to 12 depending on the situation. There wouldn’t be any need to fiddle with a mechanical rear derailleur and such. I much prefer being able to do that from a phone/computer.

Hi. Brilliant video . Thank you very much for the effort you put in. ❤ I am a true and true roadie, I ride a sweet Orbea Orca. However, I am looking at a Brompton. I think I want 1. Racks 2. Extended rollers 3. Fenders/mudguards 4. A neat solution for lights 5. Rim brakes are fine. Question is, can I just get a Brompton A-Line and upgrade it to have those 4 I mentioned?

As an owner of 2 Bromptons and a fan of your channel, I find none of your arguments compelling for a G-line. I watched this video 5 times to make sure that I was not missing the point, but how would be the argument "I never owned an e-bike" be an argument for anything, besides mud guards and stuff? I also commute daily, but how would this bike add to my commute? I also own a Tern P10 with disk breaks, which are just higher in maintenance and risk on longer rides. I would assume that the majority of people accept the downsides of a 16 inch Brompton over the so called advantages of this heavy beast with disk breaks any time. If you need a gravel bike, just buy one.

@@TheLicewine thanks for you input and following. This video is just aimed at what made me buy the 20inch electric over the non electric g line not any other Brompton. I still maintain the 16inch P line is the best Brompton. When I talk about my commute I’m just curious if having a motor will make it feel any easier. I can’t draw any real conclusions till I test ride this bike for a while but as a Brompton creator I had to get one and choose the electric for the reasons highlighted in the video. I like minivelos. I own a Moulton. I baby my Moulton so it comes out only in good weather and I don't ride it daily. I like both a Brompton and the Velo-orange Neutrino. Neutrino has the disk brakes and wider range of tires going for it. Where as Brompton has it's compact folded size to just toss it in the boot of my car. Now the G-line combines those two. It looks like a very good option. Hopefully it will come to Finland too. We still are waiting for the electric Brompton. The availability of Bromptons isn't great. Just couple of P-lines came to our shores.

Bigger Brompton is better. Now it has 20 inch wheels, which makes it definitely better to ride. Folding mechanism is also the same good old, which Brompton has had already a long time. There are certainly details to be critisized, like the small rack..etc, but they are just details which can be changed in the future. It's the first time I ( hyothetically) would consider a Brompton. I live in a car free city but due to the medieval character there are some cobblestone areas ( 10%). A regular Brompton is pure suicide. That's why, in this class, a Birdy is mileages ahead imho. But, let's see what a G-line offers. Still, I don't put my stock in it. See, with a birdy R20 ( 20 inch) I don't need to hit the breaks when reaching the suicide zones. It's maybe less compact when folded ( although the G line won't be either) but I only need to carry it 1 floor up so..

I have an M6R that was flipping brilliant in the days when I was commuting into London on the train, but it gets very little use these days now that I'm retired, the roads around where I live in the country are just too rough and it's hopeless on gravel/muddy trails. The G Line looks ideal for me, it would give a much more manageable ride on rougher roads & trails and the slightly larger fold size and weight wouldn't be an issue as it would mostly be transported in a car or on off-peak rail services. I'll be very happy to consider buying one once I can have a test ride. The only challenge I have is that my wife will want one too, so that doubles the price!

Kinetics are already offering an 11 speed conversion for the G line. By buying the Brompton electric version you now have to buy your new motors etc from Brompton. You're an expert and Daniel is an expert too but you come to different conclusions about Brompton electric bikes. It's my own uneducated opinion that Brompton's hub motor and front mounted battery pack could be a bit antiquated, especially for the price. I'm curious what you think. I think you are on to something with your hunch that it is the gear-change thumb shifter that is the problem with gear changing. I have recently acquired a 5 speed P Line and after only four weeks the dreaded sloppy gear change reared its ugly head. I have no difficulties changing up and down from gear 2 up to 5 and back down again, but when I try to engage 1st gear the change becomes very "iffy" with only about a 30% chance of hearing it click into bottom gear when I press the lever to downshift. After trying different ways of downshifting eg: quick press-light press- long press and pushing only on the sharp edge of the button, I have found that my method of putting pressure on the edge of the button as I shift down gives me the best result and, so far , is the most reliable method of getting into bottom gear before I lose momentum and grind to an embarrassing stop on the steepish slope that leads to my flat. I am not saying this is a foolproof way of overcoming the problem, but(so far) it works for me.

I got a Brompton 6-speed in 2017. I immediately bought a flat carbon bar for it. This wasn't for weight-saving, but because I hate the feedback/vibration with aluminium bars. Coincidentally Schmolke were the company I bought the carbon bars from. The reason I went with Schmolke was because at that time, they were one of just a couple of companies in Europe that made flat carbon-bars that were compatable with bull-horn bar-ends. Bull-horn bar-ends add a very welcome extra hand positioning for the Brompton, and they don't affect the fold at all. In fact it looks like the bike was designed to fold with bull-horns. I don't know why more people don't have bull-horns on their Bromptons. I hate ergon grips and instead have a double wrapping of cushioned road-bike bar-tape. The bar-tape is also on the bull-horns (double-wrapped of course). Oh, another reason I swapped out the Brompton bars was so that I could add small mirrors to the ends. Therefore I have a small Zefal spin mirror on both ends of the handle-bars (my bike is for commuting in city traffic and mirrors are important). The mirrors also fold out of the way and don't interfer with the folding of the bike. Aside from the handle-bars, I also have quick-release SPD pedals. It's another really useful improvement compared to standard Brompton components. Clip-in pedals make for much more efficient pedaling than non-clip flat pedals.

I may be the odd man out on this one, but I don't like cables going to the rear of folding bikes. I understand if you're going to go touring or whatnot with a folding bike having more than 2 gears is the best way to go about it. And Disk Brakes would probably be the best option. However, for casual commuting with a folding bike 1-2 gears is plenty, and same with a coaster bike for the rear. That's why my Current setup is a 700x35C Montague Boston with a 2 Speed Sturmey-Archer Kickback hub. Right now I need to reduce the chainring size as the hub only increases your gearing 38% in its second gear, and my main issue now is having a lower gear. If after this I need more speeds, I'm getting a Schlumpf Mountain Drive 2 speed bottom bracket for 4 speeds total. Not having any cables going to the rear makes for a quick and easy fold, with no cables on the rear to get snagged on stuff while moving it about folded. Also, it looks clean as hell. Not to mention, I find a coaster brake to be a lot more intuitive for people who mostly have experience with motorcycles, as motorcycles usually have a foot actuated rear brake. For that reason, I set up the bike with a right side front brake lever instead of a left side one, and I quite like it. While the quick fold of the Brompton is nice, having to rely on a chain tensioner for an IGH seems dumb IMHO. I can fold my Montague just as quick with no chain tensioner... Also, Aluminum Forks... WHY? I've had aluminum fail on me suddenly enough times I'd never want to use it as a main suspension material, and I consider rigid front forks to be the main suspension. Hell, the aluminum frame on my Montague isn't preferable, CHROMOLY FTW!

Perhaps mirroring what other folks have said, the G line seems quite appealing to me in North America where the bike infrastructure is quite poor and you are often forced to ride in places that are not quite as friendly to the brompton.

This is a bike in search of a purpose. You mention this being good for touring. I tour with my C line & i disagree. The major advantage of the Brompton is being able to fold it & take it on a plane. My c line when packed in it's case with necessary tools is 47 lbs. The G line will be over the 50lbs limit. Also finding a bag to transport it won't be easy. If you're not taking it on a plane then why a Brompton rather than a less expensive, lghter purpose built touring bike.
