It's no harder than any other martial arts. In fact, it can be one of the easiest to learn and effective, which is why it is so widespread among women.

I just started BJJ at 39. My 7yr old son trains and it looked like fun, but I was scared because I have complex ptsd after being in a severely abusive relationship. I started doing research and discovered there was some evidence of efficacy as a compliment therapy for trauma survivors. I spoke with our professor (female black belt whose also had some trauma) and she encouraged me to try. I roll in a mixed class, but she only pairs me with women for now. I feel safe knowing that my professor is trauma informed and my husband stays with me to watch for signs of distress.

That's amazing. There are SO many women who share a similar story, including myself (Founder at Alchemize). BJJ can help people immensely with taking their power back and I hope it helps you!

I train because I am responsible for myself and my 4 kids. I'm 5'1", weigh 115 so I come across as a soft target. I cannot always carry my gun due to working at a hospital so I want to make sure that I come home to my family every day.

I train because I went through a horrible situation and I don't ever what to feel that lack of control ever again. I also train to help my mental, emotional and physical health. When I hit the mate, Gi or no-Gi, I feel a sense of release and peace. Only way I can describe it.

I train Jiu Jitsu because after what felt like rock bottom in my marriage experiencing emotional infidelity and domestic violence, I promised myself I would never feel that hopeless again. Jiu jitsu has allowed me to re-gain my sense of self, through the confidence, discipline, empowering, and challenging ways that it pushes me to keep moving forward, even when you think you can’t. It’s always there for me at the end of the day, and has allowed me to overcome feelings I’ve formerly struggled with in my life like low self esteem with myself and body, anxiety, and fear. Jiu jitsu has saved my life and heart. I’m eternally grateful, and hope every woman gets to experience what it’s like to step on the mats and overcome similar obstacles in their life and with their self. It is so much more than a sport. ❤️

I just did my second jujitsu class and I can already feel myself getting hooked. I want to be limitless, to use my body to its fullest potential. I’ve never done a contact sport of any sort, but I’ve been powerlifting for a few years and am a total form nerd. Jujitsu is so cool- the technique, the challenge of learning execution, the practical applications, and laughing at myself because I’m a complete newb and have no clue what I’m doing hahaha. It’s honestly magical, and I want to keep training to build discipline and to teach myself that I can do hard stuff. Also, to teach myself that it’s totally okay to suck- because that’s where everyone starts with a new skill :)

I train because it has built my confidence up both mentally and physically. I feel more aware and comfortable in my body. I feel stronger and more in shape and for the first time in my life I can identify as an athlete. I've built amazing friendships and feel like part of a community.

I love these different styles. I don't jiu jitsu now, but I do paddle. And for dragon boating, it's hard to find apparel that works for this sport. When on the boat, I have to use a butt pad and pants cause the options available always seem to be for the girl that wants to tiktok her workout. And with paddling there's so much movement with our shoulders into the water, so finding a rash guard that is flattering and a bra that can allow mobility and keep things where they need to be is really important for me. I'm excited to see the diversity of styles. So even though I don't train MMA, I do love the ultra lightweight designs!

I started training in medical school as a way to destress and get more exercise into my life. The welcoming community was what got me to stay and I like the physical/mental challenge of it while also getting to learn self-defense techniques!

I started training to learn how to defend myself and to hopefully give myself another competitive outlet. I was an athlete my whole life, so after college I was feeling a little lost not having anything to compete in and really work towards physically. Jiu jitsu has helped me gain confidence in my physical abilities, it's helped me gain strength mentally and it helps get my introverted self out of my shell lol. Life is always going to throw tough situations at us, but jiu jitsu forces us to learn how to deal with really tough situations on the daily.

started training because I’m a survivor of domestic violence. Back in 2018 I found myself in a hospital bed for a few days trying to escape my own life to get away from the man I was in love with, but scared of my life of. My now professor was a long time friend at the time and knew exactly what I’d been going through. He invited me to come in for free while I was getting back on my feet mentally, and I cannot tell you how much it helped me channel my emotions and feel like I could make myself safe from him. I lost a heavy amount of friends from this whole experience too, and I can’t tell you how quickly they all felt like family. It helped me realize again that not all men wanted to hurt me, and that I could indeed trust them. Genuinely don’t know where I would be without Jiu Jitsu.

I first started training because I needed to pick a project for my senior project ! Now I train because it helps relieve some of my stress and anxiety. Once I walk into my gym doors everything that I was thinking about and worrying about that day is behind the gym doors. All I think about for the rest of the time being is the training for the day :)

I train because it is rewarding to see hard work pay off. There are no shortcuts in this sport, and you improve only by staying the course and focusing all your energy on learning. It is intimidating to be out of your element--but that is exactly why training feels good. Success wouldn't be worth anything without the struggle!

I train jiu jitsu because it is a pulsing example of living in the moment. Getting out of your head, checking in with your body, your mind, and your ego. A synchronization of all things coming together to feel and be alive.

I train because I had always wanted to learn a martial art that had real-world application. BJJ builds the best self-defense skills for women, no question. I am also super competitive and love being able to leave everything on the mats. When you're rolling, you learn really fast how to be absolutely present and have a mind-body connection so you can flow. It's as much for the mental benefits as the physical that I love it. And the community you build is one of deep personal friendships and trust, based on hours and hours of grinding out our egos on the mats together. There's nothing else like it.

I started training as a way to spend more time with my fiance who is a blue belt. I train now because Jiu Jitsu challenges me mentally and physically in a way that no other sport has. It makes me so proud and excited about what my body is capable of. It has given me a group of strong female friends/role models. I can't wait to see where it takes me.
