What kind of frameless packs have you tried for extended priodes ? :) frameless packs have other advantages than lower weight (you still save some 300-400 grams) its more about that it carries the weigt better when you are 8-10 kiloes or lower - you carry the weight closer to you body center of gravity, so it affects your walking motion less at the same weight. But of course this is when we are talking UL pack weight.

I generally agree with what you say here, however, this whole trail runnner and allowing your feet to get wet thing is just the worst advice ever. As an ex-soldier I can say for sure that keeping your feet and the inside of your footwear dry at all times is an absolute priority if you are doing multiple day hikes. Once your feet get damp or wet for extended periods then the skin quickly starts to break down and you will be in trouble. Fine if you are in a hot climate, but in variable to cooler climates this really is very bad advice in my experience and seems to be quite widespread unfortunately, I've already seen a few through hikers come unstuck because of this . On a wider point some things are not necessary but are what I call morale items, they can have a positive effect way beyond the inconvenience of carrying them, my ultralight chair is such an item, I take the hit on carry it because sitting in a chair and having a brew under temporary cover can be a priceless morale boost when things are getting tough.

I have to disagree with this review, in my experience you're getting a lot for your money with this pad. I agree it is a bit bulky but I don't have any problems getting the air out of it and putting it back into its bag, just fold into thirds length ways and roll towards the valve, that works fine for me and it fits into the bag fine. In terms of comfort it's the most comfortable pad used for this 6' ft 2" side sleeper and though I wondered if it would be long enough it's fine for me ( I have the wide version ). I also don't find any problem with the sides as you've mentioned, I've always felt warm on this pad. The pad has a soft spungy feel which I actually like and is just really comfortable in my experience. My only real criticism is the bag it came in, the stitching for the handle literally just feel apart at one end, but I couldn't be bothered to send it back, I'll probably repair it myself at some point. IMHO, for the price, comfort and warmth this is an excellent buy and much better than your review suggests, it's not a noisy pad either. The criticism about the valve placement it a bit weird for me as well, it should be on the bottom for me, once you've used a pad once or twice you know how much air you need and I never need to adjust a pad in the middle of the night, I don't really want the valve apparatus making things uncomfortable or getting in the way on the top.
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh 17 күн бұрын
I said in the review I believe it to be worth the money spent 🤷🏼‍♂️ being half the price of an xlite or tensor so not bad, not bad at all… even if I addressed everything I believe could be improved on next version. Air shrinks and expands due to temperature so if inflating and it gets colder you might need to add some more and if the valve is in the bottom it’s more fuss… same thing in the morning or during the night you might want to decrease a bit. You get a lot of pad for that money, but far from perfect. In my opinion.

I wouldn't buy it, but if I was on a tight budget and needed a pad with a fairly high R value I might consider one if they had a wide version. There's always going to be a price to pay for budget gear like this. They don't insulate the sides to keep down cost, pack size and weight, because if they didn't it would be way too heavy and take up so much pack space that it would be too impractical at any price. The build quality is probably good, though, and it'll at least be reliable. In the US, probably the best budget pad going right now is the Outdoor Vitals Oblivion, but it's a limited run and when they're gone they're gone. Myself, I just bought the new Nemo Tensor All Season in wide and it has a higher R value along with a much smaller pack size than my former most used pad (a skinny Thermarest Prolite Apex), while being an inch and a half thicker. The advertised weight is identical. The price difference... Well...

I keep one on my keychain and it's all I need most of the time for both hiking and every day tasks. Those scissors come in handy! Sometimes if I plan on doing a bit of cooking or want to slice up some bread for a trailside sandwiches, I'll bring a slightly larger "picnic knife," but as you said, I can plan for that. As for self-defense, I feel like in most cases my trekking poles would be more useful for fending off an aggressive animal or person. Especially if I can remember any of the moves from my college fencing lessons 😃

Did you use the pump to suck the air out of the pad? That makes a huge difference in oack size, ive found and gets them pancake thin. My EXPED Ultra 7R is my favored pad for comfort (I'm also a side sleeper) and os much the same construction and packed size. I find that rolling is a poor way to pack that pad; flatrening it and folding it to the dimension of the backpack seems to work far better and giveore usable room. It can also help add a little structire to the pack, especially if youre usong a framless option. I was disappointed to hear about the lack of insulation in the baffles. Have you tried Flextail's pullow? I tried it on a whim after realizing that shape worked better for me and buying a foam pillow for my bed. I was flatly amazed how good that Flextail pillow is and actually slept on ot for over a month as my everyday pillow. The valveaterial could he a bit better but it nevet leaked on me, and at just $27USD its hard to go wrong. The pack size was worrying but i think theyeasures the stuff sack dimensions; it actually gets MUCH smaller than that without any real effort, and is just slightly bigger than my Sea to Summit pillow.

Hi 👋🏻, tried to use the pump to empty the pad but the air gets trapped anyways and only the outer baffle (where the valve is) was empty but a lot of air left in the others 🤷🏼‍♂️ tried but didn’t work very well. I too fold the pad, depends on which one how… but the Nemo gets soo small I fold it like in the video but the Xtherm I fold and have gains my back. Never tried the pillow from Flextail, I use the Dreamsleeper from Big Sky… a great pillow.

@@roberthammenrudh yeah, you have to keep the valve area clear because (as I'm sure you observed) it'll try to suck up the underside and block the air flow. All you need is a slight pinch or deformation of the material and it'll usually work fine. As an aside; you mentioned the top vs bottom. Is the material different between the two? If not, just use it 'upside down' I guess so that the valve is facing upward. Just a thought but since I haven't gotten one myself I obviously have little idea what the heck I'm on about. ;) Thanks for the videos. I really appreciate the work you put into these as well as your takes on gear.

Hi 👋🏻, love this tent but the inner needs some adjustments (added clips) to stay in place but in general it’s great. Easy to pitch, enormous vestibules and good ventilation for the hot days, and pitched low for the windy ones. I don’t have much gear inside actually, on top I have my puffy and puffy pants and down at the bottom my clothes I hike in. The electronics are beside me along with the ditty bag. On the outside (in the vestibules) I have my pack, shoes and food pod. Enough space for cooking and stretching your legs when sitting up. 🤷🏼‍♂️ what more can one ask for… the most annoying thing is off course the sloping backside and that when sitting up you easily rub your head against it, but that’s the problem on all tipis. Glad you like my content… and for more info in the tent, take a look at my review 🙂.

We use zpacks kilt with gaiters that go over boot and up under the kilt. Have the air, and also the protection from rain. Also for heavy weather that is cold, we combine the goretex pants with the kilt and gaiters. Keeps us warm and dry in the important parts. Kilt is also useful for small tarp over front door of tent, tied off to a tree. Stops rain getting in vestibule and allows us to have vestibule open keeping condensation down. We tend to layer our wet weather gear, even on the top. Wet warm weather, zpacks dyneema cape over us and the pack. If cold, goretex jacket, pack and then the cape. Double layer, keeps us warm and dry and also the pack stays dry. Umbrella also if not windy, means we have a dry head and air around the face head and neck. We'd rather take more gear and stay dry. If weather starts to clear up, we can remove layers one by one as needed, allowing each layer to dry out properly as we are walking. Also, dyneema cape is great for keeping items in tent from getting damp in heavy weather during the night, good over sleeping bag. Some people zip up kilt or cape and pull it over sleeping bag from the bottom so sleeping bag does not get wet up against end of tent during night. For their price which is expensive, kilt and cape are lightweight and versatile. Good addition to camp gear and protection from wind also. Having spent over 50 years camping, dyneema is a delightful product, and allows us oldies to extend our camping out time into old age. It gets harder to carry a heavy pack when the age sets in...

If I remember correctly I put some links in the description but we’ll, the small amount of the active ingredients a personal device like this or Thermacel releases is not harmful. That’s my conclusion along with the Swedish government and the documentation I have read. In larger quantities it is widely used as pesticides for cleansing houses and in forests areas as well and that is off course an other story completely. A bit up to you to use it or not, but I do and I believe it’s the one that works the best in camp for mosquito free evenings.
