I have been using mine for the past week at the beach and at home in the mountains. While I haven't noticed a single mosquito, fly or gnat, I have noticed it does not work for wasps, hornets or bees. You can also use the Thermacell mats, cut in half, or other brand mats fit into the unit.

Good to hear you like it, but the Thermacell mats are a bit thicker making them no the best fit… so recommend using the originals.

Nice to get some feedback from the users, I like it as well…. Works great, lightweight and small enough not to take up too much space!

How well does the Flextail work when there is a small breeze? Does it just blow the insecticide away leaving you unprotected?
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh 3 ай бұрын
It’s the same problem with all these evaporation products like TinyRepel, Thermacell etc and that they don’t work very well in wind. Small breeze is ok, but not more.

Will this harm or kill other insects such as honey bees and butterflies etc?

If I remember correctly I put some links in the description but we’ll, the small amount of the active ingredients a personal device like this or Thermacel releases is not harmful. That’s my conclusion along with the Swedish government and the documentation I have read. In larger quantities it is widely used as pesticides for cleansing houses and in forests areas as well and that is off course an other story completely. A bit up to you to use it or not, but I do and I believe it’s the one that works the best in camp for mosquito free evenings.

It's a great idea, and the refills cost much less than Thermacell, which is good. However, at $25/month for 10 hours per day of use, the refills are still pricey. We get mosquitoes for six months out of the year. And then there are blackflies (are they a kind of midge?). I could see using this for occasional group outings, but probably not for daily hiking until there is a cheaper source for the refills.

If using the equipment that much the cost of each pad is off course a bigger deal than the price of the equipment itself. Don’t know if black flies are same as midges but the substance Flextail use the Meperfluthrin is much more efficient compared to Prellethrin so, might work! Found some nice info after recording this video proving that! Also found out that, if I remember right… for the Meperfluthrin to be to any danger for humans you need to drink it 🤷🏼‍♂️ or somehow get 2000 mg into your system and each pad has 5 mg! So not a big risk! Good luck for your search for cheaper refills… 👍🏻

@@roberthammenrudh Regarding human toxicity, inhaling is probably more effective than swallowing, and some will penetrate your eyes (which are part of your brain). The stuff is a neurotoxin, so a tiny bit goes a long way. We may not know enough (yet) about long-term exposure. OTOH, I am much larger than a mosquito, so I might risk it. :)

If you use the rival tac in outdoor mode, combined with the brightest lantern mode, how long does the battery last?

Greetings. I have the Thermacell backpacker (4 oz) which for me has the advantage of working off the same isobutane fuel canister as my cook stove, but uses the same mats as the MR300. Just curious if you have any experience with it and as a possible "middle ground" to the two options here. I must admit the Light Repel size/weight looks great for a one night trip - I just wish they'd saved even more weight/cost by eliminating the light/charging function which will be covered by other items.

Been thinking about the backpacker myself but usually I only bring a small canister which for me is good enough for a week, if I then also need to share it with the backpacker… then I need a larger canister and that add a lot to the weight! Great one though, if you have the bigger canister or the smaller one for 1-4 day hikes.

It's nice to have a choice in repellents. Both have advantages and disadvantages. I have found that the more things a item is suppose to do the quicker one function or more will fail. Not saying the Flextail would fail , just going from past experience. I know the Therm-a-cell works here in the Florida swamps. It has keep me bug free for more years then I care to count. Those trips are from 3 days to 4 weeks and I trust old friends and proven equipment. There is a good chance I might own a Flextail sometime in the future. Like you said , it would be ideal for an overnight trip.

One should off course use equipment one trust and has proven to work, 33 grams ain’t much at the end of the day! But if you have the possibility to try, and like you say for short trips it’s a nice solution, the Tiny Repel.

I really enjoy your channel and appreciate the reviews. One thing to bring up is that butane devices might struggle at altitude (and low temperature), which is where I do almost all of my camping during mosquito season. The Thermacell backpacker I own has had problems in the past and I no longer take it with me but I have no experience with the MR 330. I hope someone with experience using the mr300 at altitude can chime in.

Well yeah, tried it before the review and the biggest problem these battery driven mosquito devices is if they don’t get hot enough… but this did so 🤷🏼‍♂️👍🏻 worked as expected even if I believe you need it on max to make a real difference.
