I purchase my Trangia Micro kit with their tried & true alcohol Spirit Burner Stove vs the gel burner. On an overnight hike last week in the Adirondacks, NY, temps didn't get above freezing. I filled the small pot with water and woke up with it completely frozen. With one stove filling, I was able to melt the ice & bring the water to a boil for morning coffee.

Not much of a winter stove as the fuel has always been low BTU; but add a tinfoil windscreen to protect the handle as well as block the wind. I remember when a MSR Pocket Rocket only cost $50. The BRS stove costs half of that.

I still think this stand for T28 and Micro needs some reinvention cause it doesn’t protect from wind at all (two holes would be enough to protect from wind from at least one side). My solution is either to buy extra wind shild (which makes the whole set less ultraweight and less compact) or to buy the pot alone and order customized windshield/stand protector from Speedster Stoves (costs about 18 £) together with their 20 or 30 ml non spill alcohol burner (5 £). Set like this is light, and efficient.

The pot stand is no an effective windscreen. I must be supplimented. I use a Vargo folding windscreen that is 3 inches tall. Just enough for the Trangia pot stand. The pot stand is the same Trangia uses in it's 28 T Mini model. Thank you for your review

Just point the handle into the wind, you can decern the direction front the flame, so...180° away from the flame. = no burning of sylicone handle cover and a cooler handle. ALWAYS carry a windshield, very lightweight titanium ones are available. If you approach Trangia re the pot stand/windshield you might mention the necessity of cutting out/reshaping one side, to fully utilise the alcohol burner's regulator.. I added a thin titanium strip for 3/4 of the circumference it enhance the wind baffling. Had the pot been titanium I might have bought it, it can Contain the stand/wingshield, where as the Evernew does not. Thank you so much for sharing. Best regards Colin

Hi 👋🏻 and yes, I was a bit occupied with the camera and all so missed the flame touching the handle and saw it a bit too late 😥 but anyways, gives it a bit of character 😄 will see if I talk to Trangia directly or not, maybe they are interested but probably not. A small windshield is ok to bring or like someone mentioned a small piece of Al-foil folded to fit and block the wind if necessary.

The Trangia Micro Light set is a great budget coking set. I still have mine and like it but retired it years ago. The replacement is not a Budge Set by any means but worth every Penney. My personal choice for the last 30 or more years is the Evernew Titanium Lightweight Camping , Mug , Pot , Stove Set, 500. Commonly called , The Appalachian Set. It's total weight is 5.67 ounces or 161 Grams. The Burner is 34 grams ( 1.19 oz ), the Pot support is 52 grams ( 1.83 oz ) and the Pot is 74 grams ( 2.61 oz ). They say you can use wood in it as an alternative fuel source but I have not tried it.

The gel burner is pretty terrible. I got one to use with the Triangle. It goes a little soft when used a few times and it’s hard to clean out the gunge the gel leaves behind. The pot looks like good quality and significantly lower cost than any of the Ti pots out there for a small weight penalty. The pot stand is the same as the Trangia 29 mini, you have to have a second windshield or it’s useless. A foil windshield is pretty simple to make. I’d be tempted to just use the kettle from the 27, Trangia make a bag for that to keep the soot off the rest of your kit, the brass burner works well with a trivet and a separate windshield.

Hello from sunny Malaysia. I recently bought the Trangia Micro directly from their webshop as I can't get them out here. It's a handy little set for back or bikepacking taking up very little room but like you, I found it struggles in the slightest of breezes and I've also got a melted silicon handle now as well. Consequently, I now take a windshield with me and it performs ok. I experienced the same issue with my Trangia Mini, so the potstand is definitely its achilles heel and needs a rethink. apart from this issue I'm very pleased with it on my day outings.

Hi from far far away and -2 degree cold Sweden 👋🏻 so we have the same experience using it but yes, like you say a small windshield fix this or a piece of aluminium foil inside for closing the holes facing the wind. I hope Trangia rethinks the windshield and make an upgrade for this small sets, good value for the money otherwise!! Take care and enjoy the sun ☀️😎👍🏻

I have these Trangia components except the pot and used the gel fuel tin with a Vargo Hex folding stove some Sterno catering/fire starting fuel and the GSI Glacier kettle. It works good enough but I didn’t care for how much sputtering the sterno gel makes and definitely needs a wind screen. I really enjoy my Trangia 25 set for appropriate applications but I can get there with what parts of gear I already have. For someone starting from scratch it’s a nice novelty. I like the flexibility of having different fuel sets for different reasons. Thx for bringing some different Trangia kits. I use my Trangia burner the most of my alcohol kits. You could use a junky old cat food or tuna tin and any type of stand w a SS pot for better results than a total meltdown.

I use the Micro either with hexamine tablets or spirit (usually spirit), but add a small windshield, when needed. Then it works. But I really like the modularity, as I can pick any heat source I want and also use the Triangle. And use it with gas, if I were in a hurry. But for me gas is usually too fast and loud. When I have a break in the woods, I really want to sit a while and enjoy the stillness of the woods.

That is absolutely one of the big advantages with alcohol stoves… and one of the reasons I use the Windmaster canister stove because it’s about as quiet as a gas stove goes.

You could get the performance back by adding a proper wind screen, but that would add weight. I've never had alcohol stoves that can work with that open design in the wind. You could also use hexamine tabs, which probably have a better weight to performance ratio over the alcohol gel and tab solutions.

👍👍👍 A nice review, thanks. I have the Trangia T28 Mini and currently don't plan on buying smaller than that as I already have a home-grown setup that is the equivalent at the very least, of the Micro. Wind. Agreed, the Pot Stand for the Mini / Micro is not very effective as a wind screen. An aluminium folding screen (or a roll-up sheet of heavy duty aluminium) should accompany the set. Gel Fuel Sooting. Here in Switzerland, indoor table-top Cheese Fondue 'Gatherings' are a Winter National Sport and the Swiss do not take too lightly to the carbon fouling of their Fondue Apparatus 😏. The Gel available here (I use the 'Migros' Brand .. 'Sicherheitsbrennpaste' .. which comes in 800g plastic bottles), is extremely clean burning .. burn hot .. with almost no soot residue to wipe off afterwards and that (minimal) left in the burner can be scraped out with a teaspoon handle / twig. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

@@roberthammenrudh where are you based? I have seen that exactly like you - but for light or even UL hikes it has proven to me that mostly and also to a specific date alcohol is mostly the lighter option. Gascans have been the lighter option for trips longer then 7 nights or so. And it also counts and which way you see and count how much fuel you need. If you cook your coffee in the morning and also water in the evening for a warm meal (mostly self preped) you can calculate close to the exact amount what you need. Considering the weatherforecast and the height you are traveling in because of the different boilingtemperatures. And what annoys me the most is that with a used gascan you can't plan how long it will last. And that's the moment when you are looking for a new can or at least take a second one with you. With the alcohol system i can exactly take the amount of fuel with me what i need - so thats, the nearly not noticeable noicelevel and the ease of use have got me 🙂

They should cut all the fat out of 27 platform to make an ultralight version. Maybe the lower winshield dont need to be that tall. Pot stand legs are steel with that steel ring to hold them. I use the kettle for everything, noodles, porridge coffee etc. So I can leave the pot grip at home. Mostly use it at winter and don't go too far.

I love Trangia but that handle is a bad design. Also the “windscreen” known from the mini is not performing well. What should Trangia do instead? Slim down the 27 and cut weight to make it a one person set or design a cook set which fits the Triangle. Maybe update the Triangle to use it also as a little wood stove.

Well, the only issue I see with it is trangia's mis-use of the term "windshield". It's a pot stand not a windshield, and if you add a windshield (as simple as folded up aluminum foil) to it, it would become perfect. Additionally, for the crafty peeps out there, if you pack the gel burner with carbon felt/insulation you turn it into a super effective & spillproof liquid alcohol stove :)

Indeed, that pot stand is their worst design. Alcool stoves are all about proper ventilation while retaining good wind protection. I think the trangia triangle does this well. But the pot stand featured in this video is a lost cause. They should go for something in the lines of the evernew stpve. As for the fuel, instead of overpriced purpose made fuel, you can just burn hand sanitizer found on every supermarket.

Titanium is great for boiling water and for boil in the bag type meals. It is robust for it's weight and it cools quickly to be picked up or packed after use! Hopeless for something like a skillet...but aluminium isn't good..thick bottomed cast iron or stainless steel are great...but you wouldn't want to carry them far! Horses for courses...
