I discovered this game was available on the Switch eShop. I got it and immediately chose mage, because I’ve never seen him played or played as him before. I then proceeded to get my ass thoroughly kicked. I just about got my money’s worth in quarters worth of plays from dying so much. I even got past the black slime not knowing how to cast spells. It was shortly afterward I determined I was going to figure out how to cast spells. “Okay, there are two buttons and a directional stick. How hard could this be. Up attack actually does something! Just not magic. Right. Down attack is just a crouch attack. Press both? Just a bad jump attack. Uhhh… Charge attack? There it is!” I had only played it once in the very early ‘90’s, and didn’t sink many quarters into it because it was a particularly egregious quarter muncher in those days.

Forgot to mention! I didn't get far enough back then, but it was really rare for a game to actually change your weapon model when you got a new one. Magic Sword in the arcade and Faxanadu for NES were about the only games from the same era that you saw new weapon models for different weapons.

What you describe as a glitch was actually intentional according to Ryuichi Nishizawa. I've seen an official playthrough where they manage to generate every single money pickup as the larger amount. You really don't need to do that, however, and the game is perfectly completable without the extra funds. For a start, you never need to buy more than a Light shield as they don't contribute to your overall armour like in the later Wonder Boy games. Indeed, better shields up to the Hard variety will drop from certain monsters as the game goes on. Heavy armour is very aptly named too, since it seriously affects your mobility, even if it does provide a quick route to Legendary. (^_^) I also think you're being a bit critical of the game itself, no doubt in retrospect (most of your complaints about it being clumsy I can bet are down to using a pad when the game was designed for an arcade stick, and can be totally eliminated by being sure to have at least Ceramic Boots before Stage 2 is even over). When I first saw it at Holloway Road in 1987, it blew me away just how involved it was compared to other arcade games of the period, including the original Wonder Boy. Couldn't read a lick of Japanese back then, so I wasn't even aware of the special quest woven into it until someone I knew who had played the Master System version told me about it. Never forget the look on everybody's face when I strolled into an arcade at Jaywick a few years later and bought the machine there and then, that's how much I loved it. (^o^)

@vanguardsarcade4682
@vanguardsarcade4682 2 жыл бұрын
Not much. You can use it to check if... weapons, I think? ... are present on the current floor, but their real purpose is to serve as key items for quest 3. You need a certain amount to finish each level, and the amount goes up every time. Mostly they just take up space in your inventory, reducing the number of useful items you can carry. It's easily the hardest quest, so I got it out of the way first.

I finally got back to this game, gave it a solid shot and beat it - albeit with lots of reloading from saves. Very Angband/Nethack like in that you start out fighting fair but then use every dirty trick in the book to become OP, because the enemies do too. A unique experience and a lot of fun. I got a wand of wishing early in that game - I think if I never found it I'd have to play even more exploitatively. The wand of wishing loop of 'get dimensional travel, go to Azare's Plane, wish for empty vials until you have max luck then max everything else, and also rewrite every scroll into blessing or recharging for arbitrarily many wishes' is game breaking. Curious to see if this has more robust strategies to learn about, gonna be watching it...

@Patashu 3 жыл бұрын
Great watch, GG! Thoughts as I go: * Good management of the early game. Very refined, very safe. I appreciate your dedication to win-rate maximizing strats. * I knew about confused scroll reading but never thought of using a brown bat corpse for it - saves on mead. * Kind of curious why you lug/drop food rations around instead of eating them, but the hunger clock's so loose it hardly matters - just an annoyance since they also have weight LOL * Boomerangs seem really convenient - I never tried one but I'll have to remember it * The lava strike trick to get the Slaeter's Sea artifact is REALLY good. Need to remember that one. I always got confused by how using terraforming here has a 1-10% chance to end your run, like why is that a mechanic specifically? Lol * I used the Faleryn grind in a failed attempt - I just love it as a concept. A literal tree farm lol * Starting sage, grinding to xl17 before going deep into the dungeon and making every scroll time stop on command is so broken and I love it a lot * Operation Draugr Body Swap is GREAT. I knew you couldn't time stop in Nidavellir so I assumed you couldn't take the effect in lmao. * I've never seen the archmage randomized species - how do I see it, what's it look like? * You mention not knowing any games that play similarly to Ragnarok - I'd say Nethack definitely feels similar. In that game you also start off miserable and ascend into a god of death and combine all items in the game into a monstrosity of efficiency. * I really love the convenience extinction strats - once you're not afraid of a ranger I guess you can just do them wherever! * Man, the wand of wishing is *so* powerful. (You didn't even go to Azare's Plane and do empty vial wishes, but then again, you never needed to!) I'd almost say it's too strong for the game, except that the whole point of the game is cheesing the game, which is an unusual but fun way to balance a roguelike. Sage is broken, alchemist is broken, wishes are broken, Azare's Plane is broken, the Bazaar is broken, polyself is broken, time stop is broken, ETC ETC. So pick your poison. * They'd make sense in no-polyselfless conduct, but I think a lot of your extinctions were of monsters that would never in a million years make it past your AC (pale moss, red ooze, werewolf, wight, phantom asp) * 2:25:43 I've phased into monster rooms like this as a human and insta-died from fyleisch aura stacking (it seems like it can hit you inside walls, and it does up to half your MAX hp in damage, so 3 fyleischs can decide you are dead, no save). But I guess as a draugr you can't instadie because the aura doesn't effect you? * Thanks for the explanation on what triggers the 'vanish your inventory' bug - now I know to never look at the map on 1CC runs! * So I keep hearing about things that have a chance of failing, in particular blessed recharging on wand of wishing or going from 50 to 60 speed - and I've never seen it happen. Maybe the chance is low or I'm just lucky enough with a low sample size. Terraforming on the other hand has killed me plenty hahah * 2:49:07 I think you mean 'maximum of 50'? Also, I find it amusing that if you JUMP off you fall to Niflheim, but if you're THROWN off you die. I guess they have a real good throwing arc. (Also, is 51 where you die from low alignment?) * Wow Vanseril and Nidhogg are a lot easier to fight on Asgard LOL. I should keep that in mind for next time

* Kind of curious why you lug/drop food rations around instead of eating them, but the hunger clock's so loose it hardly matters - just an annoyance since they also have weight LOL - A lot of my habits in Ragnarok are holdovers from when I first found it on one of those CDs with hundreds of shareware games you used to see back in the day. I originally tried to play it like a regular RPG where you're supposed to grind levels to overcome your problems and consequently I feared the hunger clock. You're right that the weight is annoying and hunger hardly matters at all. * I've never seen the archmage randomized species - how do I see it, what's it look like? - The easiest way to encounter randomized species is to read scrolls of extinction while confused. That also has a chance to restore a species you've previously wiped out, but if nothing is extinct, the scroll should instead create a new species with randomized properties. As I recall, there are a few different potential sprites random species can use. It isn't beneficial to do that because they can potentially be ultra deadly, but it is very cool that the game has that feature. The wiki says that trying to create a second new species when nothing is extinct will kill you so don't go too crazy with it. I'm trusting the wiki's word that archmagi can create them, it's possible they can't because I don't know if I've ever seen them do it either. Then again, I try not to let archmagi do anything at all. * You mention not knowing any games that play similarly to Ragnarok - I'd say Nethack definitely feels similar. In that game you also start off miserable and ascend into a god of death and combine all items in the game into a monstrosity of efficiency. - I feel Nethack doesn't have quite the same focus on an arms race of cheese. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable about Nethack as I am with Ragnarok though, I've only beaten the former once. Ragnarok's open world definitely makes its strategies more interesting, you can get away with some egregious behavior with a bit of knowhow. * They'd make sense in no-polyselfless conduct, but I think a lot of your extinctions were of monsters that would never in a million years make it past your AC (pale moss, red ooze, werewolf, wight, phantom asp) - You're probably right. I don't know which abilities can bypass AC, and which monsters I use extinction on is also largely based on habits I never dropped ever the years I've been playing this game. A red ooze is potentially still a problem if you carelessly mash into it and it eats your weapon. * 2:25:43 I've phased into monster rooms like this as a human and insta-died from fyleisch aura stacking (it seems like it can hit you inside walls, and it does up to half your MAX hp in damage, so 3 fyleischs can decide you are dead, no save). But I guess as a draugr you can't instadie because the aura doesn't effect you? - Fyleisch auras hurt draugrs, but the damage only triggers on the fyleisch's turn. Since a draugr is 6 times as fast as a fyleisch, you can generally move in and kill them before it hits you. They're one of the biggest mid to late game threats and the best defenses are speed and telepathy. * So I keep hearing about things that have a chance of failing, in particular blessed recharging on wand of wishing or going from 50 to 60 speed - and I've never seen it happen. Maybe the chance is low or I'm just lucky enough with a low sample size. Terraforming on the other hand has killed me plenty hahah - I've definitely had wands of wishing explode. It looks like mine was supposed to explode at 2:38:50. You can briefly see the line "the wand strains and explodes," yet it remains in my inventory. I wonder if wand of wishing explosions are bugged in the latest version or something? * 2:49:07 I think you mean 'maximum of 50'? Also, I find it amusing that if you JUMP off you fall to Niflheim, but if you're THROWN off you die. I guess they have a real good throwing arc. (Also, is 51 where you die from low alignment?) - I meant minimum of 50 because I trusted the wiki. But the wiki is obviously wrong because right here in this video we can clearly see that there are fewer than 50 edgeworts waiting on Bifrost. I should edit that line out. I've deliberately killed myself due to low morality but I didn't keep count. The number of immoral acts you need to commit to trigger it is absurd, it should never happen unless you do it on purpose, and even then it takes some effort. Thanks for the comments and glad you liked the video!

@@vanguardsarcade4682 - (food rations) Makes sense - the game feels so scary and difficult when you're first playing it. Like, 20kish turns to do all the quests and face the Gods, when you can barely even get through the forest and dungeon without stopping to regen everywhere? It has that interesting quality as a game where it feels so unknownable and scary when you first play it, but in retrospect you can squash it all down into a simple gameplan. - (randomized species) The message for confused extinctioning twice is actually hilarious - it goes 'You genocide idiots. You die.' LOL. Anyway, I tried to make the randomized species and looked around the world for it, but I couldn't get it to spawn - I don't know if I got unlucky, hit a bug or failed to understand the rules. I also un-extincted Sandiffs in the process, and they sure enough came back to life and melted my gear as before, but now had a name like ' ' (all blanks). Definitely feels like I hit a bug there. - (on nethack) It CAN be about the cheese war. There are a lot of things you can do that are very cheesy (between Elbereth, magic marker writing, what to wish for, black pudding farming in pre-3.6, polypiling, alchemy to supersize your stats, holy water manufacturing). It definitely feels like it has the same absurd power curve as Ragnarok too, where you eventually only fear Titans, Archons, Minotaurs and a bunch of stuff you can genocide to make it a non-threat (liches, mind flayers, ;s). A different roguelike that's less about the cheese arms race and more about Becoming God is Angband - where you end up moving 3x fast permanently, maxing all your stats, assembling artifacts to have every resistance in the game, and filling your inventory with instant heal and escape consumables so you can go toe to toe with the final bosses in a battle of attrition. But definitely a different feel from Ragnarok, enjoyable in its own way. - (extinction choice in high AC context) I encountered a red ooze after I had -100 or less AC, mashed myself into it for a long time trying to get it to eat my weapon or kill me, and while I never damaged it it never seemed to do anything to me either. It was kind of disappointing, I wanted to make a screenshot of it to show off what it does :D But I don't know if it literally comes down to 'good AC? red oozes are harmless' or if there's some additional exception. - (fyleisch auras) Makes sense! I was speed 10 in these cases (not even wearing an amulet of quickening), so they're literally 6x as deadly as in this video. - (wand of wishing explosions) Interesting, makes sense. So they are meant to blow up, but it seems rare (between at least you and my sample sizes) and may even be bugged. - (edgeworts and alignment) Yeah, for fun I tried to die of low alignment to get the message and it took hundreds of cannibalisms before it triggered. 'The gods have found you unworthy. You are struck down by an unseen force.' I think the wiki is simple typo, and it should read MAX 50, not MIN 50. (Min is presumably 0 - I haven't tried extinctionless conduct.) Thanks for the great video - all roguelikes deserve to have a win documented for them. I documented a playthrough on my mastodon account in screenshot form, though I was using savestates and loading save so it wasn't 1CC (though with the knowledge I have now, I imagine it'd be NBD). Not sure if I can link that in a youtube comment without getting shadowblocked.

@@Patashu I've done some testing on the time limit and I don't think it exists at all. I've waited until turn 50,000 in the bazaar and nothing happened and the final battle at Vigrid still played out as normal. A bit disappointing, really, I still play as though there were a 25k turn limit to keep the game more interesting. "You genocide idiots. You die." is hilarious! On the topic of randomized species, the wiki lists Grey Terrors, which apparently can be summoned with a small chance by a scroll of summoning when confused, and Timemasters which it claims will appear if you read a scroll of time stop in certain areas. It also lists Grange Pawns, but with no information on how to encounter them. I've played Angband and tons of its variants (my username on the angband.oook.cz ladder is Van if you care) and I don't think a high end Angband character feels anywhere near as powerful as a high end character in Nethack or its descendants Adom and Ragnarok. Angband is altogether more constrained. You have to get almost every resistance or you open yourself up to stunlocks and instant kills. Your endgame HP, stats, and damage output will be comparable to another endgame character of the same race and class unless maybe if you found a truly outstanding weapon. Even speed is scaled so you can't be that much faster than endgame threats no matter how lucky you were. Sure you wind up a million times more powerful than you started, but you almost always end up at the right level of power to fight fair against Morgoth. In Adom, Andor Drakon is a helpless child compared to an archmage. That's all understandable, Angband is about tactical combat first and foremost and if your character could become 100x as powerful as they needed to be, you wouldn't need to think about your tactics at all. I don't think bands are as fun or interesting as the insanity of hacklikes though. I thought that red oozes grabbing your weapon was a counterattack, like a dreg's acid splash. Is it not? Or are those also affected by AC? Red oozes are another thing that ruined a playthrough once decades ago and I never gave them a chance to do it again.

It makes sense as an accessibility thing since it's a hard game for unspoiled players, but for 1CC attempts I would also play as though it still existed. (randomized species) I've seen timemasters but not grey terrors and grange pawns. I was wondering if grange prawns were the archmage randomized species, but it's unclear. The wiki is great for most kinds of documentation, but in a closed source game there's always going to be a few edge cases no one's ever gotten around to figuring out. (Angband) Oh, cool to see you're prolific. I'm Patashu on angband.oook.cz and I have a few wins in random places (Sil is my favourite fork and it's very much LOW power). Yeah, your Angband assessment matches mine - you're powerful but the game very much keeps pace with you. I always liked that, that the game is exactly as dangerous as you'd need to be to oblige Becoming God. And yes, it has the side-effect that you can never become stupidly overpowered even by the game's standards (compare for example, breaking the game in Binding of Isaac with an infinite combo). (red oozes) All I know is that I had an OP character and I mashed my face into a red ooze for a very long time and it never did anything item destroying or instadeath-y. Probably need more experimentation to figure out 100%.

The whole game has beautiful visuals. Did you see the trailer for the new sequel Natsume is working on? It looks even better. A Kiki Kaikai sequel by the original Natsume crew is a dream come true. Here's hoping for a PC port.

Loved the playthrough and am seriously impressed with the non-save scumming win. I've always wondered if scroll of switch bodies into Hel dragon would work but never bothered to try. I always try for viking -> swordsman -> draugr instead. Do we know what limitations scroll of switch body has? I believe a potion of transformation has more powerful polymorph options than the wand (e.g., borgon vile)? I use the same lava strike trick on slater's sea. Cool to see that others thought of it too.

To my knowledge, which the bodies you can and can't polymorph into was decided on arbitrarily by the game developers. It isn't based on their stats or anything. I believe the scroll of switch body works based on HP, if the highest HP monster in the area with a valid, player-usable body has more HP than you, it'll switch you. Switching into a hel dragon doesn't work. Draugr is pretty clearly the best body with its absurd speed, high stats, solid resistances, and no limitations on equipment. Potions of transformation do have some solid options, including swordsman and borgon vile, my picks for the 2nd and 3rd best bodies, but it can''t make you into a draugr. Either is still more than capable of beating the game. The default human body is viable to win with even if you don't abuse time stop. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Mage was the only one I couldn't complete it with because of the anti-magical monsters in the castle at the end. Having watched this play through though, the ones in this version can totally be killed by magic. It was the grey tentacaly creatures that were static on platforms.

The grey ropers are invincible while spawning, but I believe magic works on them in every region of the arcade game. Were you on one of the console ports?
