FANTASTIC. I found this interview in the wee hours of December 26, 2024, after doing a search on Christopher McQuarrie interviews. I've been compiling a playlist for a couple of weeks now, because of my massive respect for his work on the MI franchise, as well as Valkyrie, Maverick, etc.. He and Tom Cruise together are mind-boggling. I saw the running time and the thumbnail of this interview, and wondered what this could possibly be! What it it turned out to be was FANTASTIC. Daniel, you're a very invested and knowledgeable interviewer, and true lover of the art form. And I consider this interview to be a major part of film history, akin to Truffaut's interview of Hitchcock. Thank you so much for doing this! Cheers to you!

McQ (as his buddies refer to him) is a true creative powerhouse. His collaborations with Tom Cruise have produced some consistently intelligent and excellent movies. If I recall correctly, on the behind the scenes footage for the first "Jack Reacher" movie, Tom Cruise was saying that he and McQuarrie and a group of friends often just get together and watch classic movies. These guys are hugely successful in the movie business, but, at the end of the day, they're also just big movie fans.

such a well done interview for such a young kid!

I went to grade school through high school with him and let me just tell you that even in the 6th grade, at 11 years old, his school picture totally looked like he was a film director, with half his face all mysteriously cast in mystical literal shadow. Already destined for fame. I mean he was into theater and music already from a young age. I seem to remember being in a performance of Cats when we were 7. Our drama teacher's name was Randi, I remember he had us observing our pet cats at home and acting out cat stretches and trust games when we were babies basically. Colin also played a caterpillar who turned into a butterfly in our school play of Going Buggy. More foreshadoing for his collossal metamorphosis. Good to see he has still got his feet on the ground and hasn't totally sold his soul to the devil or lost his authenticity or his humility, sincerity, humor, care, flair and charm. A good guy, all around. Always has been. Yeah we are pretty much dinosaurs now. We grew up back in the day when there were things like walkmans and vhs players. Back when kids actually talked to each other on their walks home from school. Not just zombies ignoring each other and traffic on their little screens.

Oz is such a great guy Not only is he one of a few original thinking directors left that puts out good quality films without diluting his vision but he seems like a genuinely nice person and I can’t wait to see more films from him and I hope he gets the respect for his films he so deserves!!!

Its baffling martin brest is not directing or at least having films he has written being made by Netflix, Apple or Amazon. With the amount of garbage being made today, its astonishing that the man who made Midnight run & Beverly hills cop hasnt made more films.

him saying that about horror and comedy makes a lot of sense, literally on the subreddit someone was asking if longlegs is a dark comedy and I really think it is…there’s moments that you’re like 😂 what why was there a funny moment sandwiched in with all this horror and i laughed a lot when I saw it in theatres

I am now a certified Osgood Perkins fan, this guy is a true artist, he's not full of himself and actually respects other people, whether they work with him or not. Really fascinating and as a really amature, wanna-be filmmaker, I can relate to almost everything he said.

Thanks for the interview!! I really liked McQ's depiction of his time as a script doctor for others. It seemed like it was a difficult transitional period in which he was "recovering" from a loss of confidence (and work) after the Way of the Gun. It's hard to imagine how all of that writing he was doing during that time didn't have an impact (positive) on his writing skills that he employs now. At the same time, I can see how fixing others' work wasn't in the service of his own career trajectory.
