I've been painting for a while, but recently picked up a great tutorial book (The Art of Tommie Soule) to hopefully jump from beginner to intermediate. That book starts out at great length about brush loading, but I wanted to see a video. I think you've done an excellent job here. Thanks!

THANK YOU SO MUCH,theres so much advice online,and everyone always says thin your paint use a wet pallete etc,and i can never seem to figure out what i need to do or why my paint doesnt come out that creamy smooth that everyone else's does your advice that of using a wet pallet you can just use the paint as is helped me so much,alot of people say two thin coats including yourself,but it seemed like id have to use 4-5 coats just to get opaque coverage and i was only adding a drop of water to the paint,this has been so helpful thank you,also how do you decide what color your base coat should be ? is it just the color you intend the final product to be or do you paint over your base coat?

I primarily use a wet palette, but I do have a small plastic well palette I use for certain tasks, and they're actually not difficult to keep clean. I wait for any paint to dry, peel out what I can, and then just fill the well with 91% isopropyl alcohol. It's inexpensive and you can get it at any drugstore. Let it sit for a while and then wipe it clean with a paper towel - or you could just use an alcohol-based first aid prep pad with the same results. No abrasion when I use this method, and I can get the palette squeaky clean - unlike my friend who's never cleaned his and now it could be used as armor.

At least with parchment type membranes, there is no need to pre-soak the paper. When you place the dry paper on the wet sponge, yes, it will curl - but as the paper absorbs more water, it will begin to lay flat on its own. This is also better because you're not stretching the fibers in the paper. I'm not a professional painter but I am a professional baker, and I notice the same behavior on a larger scale.

A drop of flow improver can also improve the performance of a homemade wash (such as in your previous video), but a little bit goes a long way. Too much can cause it to become more like a glaze and lose the ability to collect in the recesses.

I find the best way to unload a brush when using thinner paints like 1:1 or a glaze, is to generally tap just the tip to a piece of tissue. That capillary effect that wicks wet paint up towards the ferrule, is the same effect that will draw excess water out of the belly of the brush, leaving you with thin paint on the brush but without the excess fluid.

Howdy from Houston! This video is just what I needed. This morning my wife told me that when I exhale after tensing up to paint detail, it sounds like a "death rattle". 😉 Thanks for the reminder to breathe!

I just started painting miniatures last month after taking a hiatus for 15 years. I have been struggling with paint consistency using a wet palette, so this video was super super helpful. Thank you so much for these fundamentals videos, they have been immensely helpful!

Of all the tips and tricks videos I've watched I don't believe anyone has ever talked about alternating values to separate sections. Such a simple concept but totally eye opening.

This is so great! Thank you for making this seem simple and much less daunting. I'm not sure if you do this first on all minis but thats going to be my first thing rather than left for the end out of fear, and spend the rest of the time convincing myself the eyes are not that important haha

Its amazing that there are so many seemingly little things that you can overlook that really help build a pleasing cohesion. I think I need to practice approaching my minis with more mindfulness and planning.

In my humble opinion, the tip on brushes is a bit off in the context of newbies. When starting out, you want synthetic brushes to practice with, get used to handling them and being careful with them. Only when you have some experience under your belt should you start experimenting with pricier brushes. High-end stuff may have potentially longer lifespan, but only if used and cared for properly: a newb with Kolinskys as their first brushes ever has a high chance of destroying them fairly quickly (i.e. letting paint seep into the ferule). And the greater danger that poses is to your motivation to get into the hobby.

Im glad to have some better language to explain why I dont love drybrushing. I was lucky to stumble on the same technique of layering over it to blur the powdery roughness of drybrushing. Learning lots from your videos. Thank you!

Coming from Citadel and Vallejo, I was surprised at how thin MSP was. It has been tricky trying to get an idea of how much water needed to be added to get a decent base coat. Interesting video!
@greglohman67506 ай бұрын
I think the low needed dilution is confusing to painters who rely on vallejo - certailny when I was learning using MSP but watching turorials from folks who use moslty vallejo (Dr Faust, Vincent V) I was baffled at how much water they were asking me to use. The explanation here makes a ton of sense, thanks!

I’m very new, but have started using a children’s ‘popit’ silicon fidget toy as a palette. Works really well for cleaning as the paint just pops right out when it’s dry. Really enjoying this series.
