Great info, the way you show Canada gets most of its wealth from the energy sector. However, you don’t mention the trade part in cap and trade. You don’t mention that it is not the only cap and trade system in the world, EU has one, California has one I believe. Even China from what I read this morning. Could mention Ronald Coase theory too. I agree it will hurt the Canadian economy but I wished you explained from where this cap (and trade) comes from. Cheers

Thanks for watching and that a fair critique, and in an earlier draft included it, but I felt in more important to discuss the trade balance and inflows.
@nestocanada2 сағат бұрын
@@IceCapAssetManagementi add that I believe in a Canada even Québec is included in the cap and trade either California. However between energy countries Canada is probably trying to do more than others (to confirm). Thanks for the answer

Oil and gas subsidies cost Canadian taxpayers at least $6.03 billion, or roughly $214 per taxpayer every year without an energy rebate. This makes the industry benefit half of the stated importance in this video. It is still a very important industry, however is grossly overstated in this video. The bigger scare should be Trump's plan to add at least a 10% tariff to all imported goods into the US. This will be compounded by "Drill Baby, Drill!." Further compounding this, is that 80%+ of TMX exports are to California. That will impact the oil patch "bigly."

I’m as well off driving cab in my hometown than as an electrician working on Syncrude’s shovels. What skilled labor shortage? Show me the incentive, and I’ll show you the outcome. The oilsands are dead. The real companies have left leaving Suncor and CNRL (Canadian public) holding the bag for the environmental destruction. Home prices in Fort McMurray are down over 33% in the past decade. And that’s on a nominal basis. They have abandoned their workforce and the ones that never left are just absorbing abuse. Not just revenues, the paycheques of the workers are cut in half and redistributed to the poor people of the east so that maybe someday they can afford their own heat pumps and use the leftover to attack both Alberta and the oilsands.

The Chinese EV tariff probably come from the puppet master telling Trudeau to do it. The only country trying to contain China is USA and by extension its vassals. As you elude to, if they truly believe EVs are so beneficial to the global environment, then it just makes sense to get as many economical units in the hands of drivers as possible. How does it make sense to give tax payer funded incentives for EVs which are mostly unaffordable to the average Canadian while putting a large tariff on affordable ones, thereby leaving the only option to continue paying up carbon taxes for gasoline and diesel for their present ICE transportation all along shaming people which don't really have an option? The carbon tax seems to be just a cash grab to help fund the Liberal money wasting machine.

Am I mistaken in understanding that over 70% of our oil companies are owned by foreign companies? How is the oil companies a golden goose if they aren't owned by us, and by supporting those companies with federal money we are literally giving our money away? A serious question as I feel that only Alberta and foreign investment benefits from this and not average Canadians.
@IceCapAssetManagement22 сағат бұрын
The current account balance covers that as foreign owners would pay themself dividends, but you can see from the chart that the primary income account is only slightly negative. Additionally, many of these firms are public - anyone can purchase shares. Finally, Alberta pays out huge transfer payments to the rest of Canada.
@SydSengotta21 сағат бұрын
@IceCapAssetManagement thanks for the information and clarification on that, much appreciated! I always enjoy Fridays (Loonie Hour) and now Thursdays as listening to you brings up lots of different perspectives and insights I may not always be aware of.
@dmcneil611321 сағат бұрын
Thanks for reiterating the point that Alberta contributes hugely to the rest of Canada through transfer payments. There isn't a region in Canada that hasn't benefited from Alberta's energy industry. Right now it's the number one revenue generator in Canada I believe and we should all be grateful we have been so blessed.

Central banks have lost control and the longer duration part of the curve reacting the way it has after cut announcements proves it. Inflation is here to stay as fiscal deficits continue to rip and the cycle of higher wages demand which begets higher prices for goods and services continues to roll on. This is more or less the “inflate away the debt” playbook that’s been seen in Germany post WWI and the US post WW2. What’s the release valve? The currency. Liquidity is expanding … just not really at an affordable price for large chunks of the population. You will own nothing and be happy because you will not be able to afford to borrow money credit to buy something. In the end, imho the debtors and asset holders will receive the wealth transfer as they have been at the expense of the savers and lenders.

Thanks Rich, great vid as always. I’ll ask again but would love if you could explain to us rubes (probably only me), why we are seeing US yields surge and others not as much. I mean why would I buy a cdn 5yr at, call it 3, and not a 5yr treasury at 4? I get they’re running a big deficit, but as are we. So if you get a chance, would really love an explanation as to who’s buying these bonds?

Hey Rich, Can you get Mitch Vexler on the Lonnie hour podcast? Or just interview him on your own? His knowledge of the legal system in the US with RE property tax fraud is very interesting and I’m assuming it’s not much different in Canada. He is based in the US but he is Canadian so I’m assuming he’s researching Canadian issues as well. He would be a huge conversation asset on the real estate topic and could push on Steve’s theories.
