Interesting material that helps visualize a lot of what many are feeling in Canada. I love the timestamps on the articles referenced so no one can claim they weren't aware this was going to be a problem.

Richard, as someone who lives in Toronto with a young family, I find it frustrating that we often avoid going out because so many places are overwhelmingly crowded. It’s disheartening to see what’s happening to this beautiful city. However, looking 10 years ahead, do you think the current population growth could ultimately be beneficial, assuming the government reduces immigration levels to a more sustainable rate? Could you provide examples of other countries that have implemented similar extreme measures and how it affected them in the long term? Great presentation! Best of luck with the new channel.

The Atlantic immigration pilot very quickly exposed many of the problems. Quick rental availability drop followed. Tent encampments started. Immigrants were suddenly everywhere.

I think one factor you're missing in the labour productivity section is the impact the anti oil and gas policies of the Trudeau gov't post 2015. This has resulted in capital flight, reduced FDI, and huge compliance costs resulting in a less competitive (and productive) energy sector. This sector has historically been one of the highest productivity sectors in the cdn economy. During this same period investment and production in the US energy sector has exploded.

Excellent point. I glossed over it when I a mentioned the Anti-Oil politicking but admittedly I could have spent more time on it. Maybe I'll make that the topic for a separate video.

It's funny how the USA vs. Canada productivity gap completely diverged in 2015. I wonder what happened?

Do you think the housing/rental situation also prevents labour mobility within Canada, further impacting labour mismatches.

Clearly the current government never had a goal of affordable housing. On the contrary the goal was to increase credit growth and the value of bank mortgage books. Increasing housing demand was always more doable than increasing housing supply in any event. The extraordinary increase in immigration helped to further stimulate housing demand. It also had the effect of suppressing wages also to the benefit of the status quo interest groups. Basically government policy is to maintain the status quo while offering platitudes of change. As such the Conservatives are now the “change party” without even positing anything substantive in terms of policy. All of this only works in Canada because of lack of engagement of the electorate.

Canadian government is not going to help people flee this 💩 show. If anything they'll do what they can to keep people, their labour, businesses and capital from fleeing. You have to do it on your own mate 💪
