Honestly, as long as the person recieving the surgery is an adult who understands the possible consequences and risks of such a surgery (which every life altering surgery has, reaffirming one's gender is no ike medically speaking.) I would argue let them do that! Yes there are dangers that one needs to be aware of, but instead of denying the surgery all together we should let people know of such dangers so they can make the choice with all the information.

Intersex people get (got) surgeries all the time against their will in order to make them conforming to a binary s*x grouping. Conservatives want surgeries when they can decide the gender of someone else, but not when people self-advocate and use their power of bodily autonomy to decide for themselves to have gender-affirming care! Anti-trans bullies want queer people and women to be controlled by others, and to specifically not exercise self-control or agency.

NGL, a the parent of a trans child, I worry about their choices in gender affirming care, but I know that it’s my problem not theirs so I help them find excellent doctors, I help them seek mental health services (because everyone has something they need to go to therapy for), I listen to well founded medical science, I’m open and honest with them, and support every choice they make because I know I’ve raised thoughtful intelligent children who know themselves. Above all else, I love my child unconditionally so there isn’t anything we can’t work our way through together.

Slight nitpick, depending in where in the world you are, these surgeries are occasionally available to transgender minors. It is, however EXTREMELY rare. From 2016-2020 in the US, there were approximately as many gender affirming surgeries (of any type) performed on transgender minors as there were breast augmentation surgeries on cisgender minors in 2020 alone. I will also add, when we say "minors" we're talking 16-18 year olds, not 5 year olds.

Would you once make the video telling us the story about how your wife got pregnant and how you found the donor, and do you still have contacts with him and when (or if) your child is going to meet him someday? I hope this question didn't sound innapropriate...

To add onto this, genital mutilation is children is VERY normalized in some countries (circumcision, mutilating girls for virginity sake, etc) but I never see them yelling about that. It's not about the children, it's about the fact that they're queer 🤷‍♂️

Just like you explained word queer being used as an insult and then, as an act of rebelion and liberation, started being used in the positive way... I had some thoughts that might sound controversal, about the word 'whore' as a deeply misoginistic term. How about, us liberal feminists, turn this insult into a positive term for rebellious and anti-puritan woman, but like, in a positive light, as something that we should be proud about? (I'm so sorry if this might sound offensive to someone, but I hope you'll understand what I tried to say)

First, she is speaking directly to the claims that doctors are performing gender affirming surgeries on actual trans children. These claims are patently incorrect. Second, she was speaking directly to claims that people who received gender affirming surgeries come to regret their choice and wish they hadn’t had the procedures. Finally, there’s been a major swing away from these the practices of performing gender affirming surgeries on infants and children who are born intersex in recent years because doctors started to realize how psychologically damaging it was for the children who were being treated in this way.

Even if they were like the transphobes are saying; the transphobes don't care about them. They'll wipe their hands, go "Oh well!" and walk off with nary a care in the world for people suffering, no matter the reason. *Especially* if they feel like it's self-inflicted, like some messed up "I told you, why didn't you listen to me?" gotcha.

It's also MUCH lower than all elective cosmetic surgery regret by a lot, so it's MUCH more likely to regret a nose job or a cis boob job just as an example. So medically that's an excellent success margin.

On RuPaul's drag race there's a drag queen named GotMik. He's a trans man (afab). He had his breasts removed. You can literally see how happy and grateful he is that he was able to do that as he talks about the surgery. Trust them, they know their body and mind more than anyone. When you see people get these surgeries, you can feel how relieved and happy they are. 😊 I'm cishet and could never understand those struggles. Who the fck am I to tell someone who is lgbtqai+ what to do and not to do to their bodies?

So... implants? I imagine those depend on why the surgery was done and whether it had side effects, as well as on the overall quality of the surgery. It's much easier to get breast augmentation than to transition, for instance, so there will be a larger data pool and more subpar surgeons. I think it's interesting tho, for instance, how many female breast cancer patients are opting to "go flat" rather than deal with the discomfort and cancer risks of implants.

What baffles me is that someone would really think that doctors would do such a surgery on a child. I'm pretty sure there's more 'doctors' who would do stuff like non necessary cosmetic surgeries on kids than gender affirming ones. And by non necessary I mean in cases not when something happens to their body, idk, they break their nose, but stuff like eye lifting (I remember case that was documented few years ago and it terrified me). And no one seems so angry about it..
@montialarson

Right? I totally agree. People will have their small children get braces or veneers, put them in tanning booths, dye their hair, etc. But a young boy wearing a dress is somehow wrong. Why is it okay for girls to wear pants but not okay for boys to wear skirts? Weird.
@loganbrooke4158
@loganbrooke4158 9 сағат бұрын
It's actually even more hypocritical than that. Doctors do perform medically unnecessary surgeries and treatments on intersex children to "correct" their bodies- leading to involuntary sterilisation, involuntary genital normalising surgery, irreversible sex assignment, and more. (Look at reports from organisations like Human Rights Watch and the United Nations if you want more information). It's really messed up. If these people actually cared they would be calling this out instead and demanding it be made illegal for doctors to do this.

@@montialarson...braces aren't a surgery. They are also, sometimes, medically necessary. Also, similar to gender affirming care, fixing someone's teeth can go a long way to helping their mental health. Also, it's typically accepted for girls to wear 'boy' clothes because being male/being a man is the 'obvious best choice'. Being female/being a woman is looked down on. So, a boy wearing girls clothes is seen as lesser, because girls are seen as lesser.

The fact that the only children who get these surgeries are intersex babies and that it’s sometimes done without the parents knowledge or consent, even in cases when it’s not medically necessary, bc of the fear it could psychologically affect them without any evidence that it would infuriates me. Unnecessary cosmetic procedures forced on children and babies should not be this common.

This just hit my feed today, and I can't help but wonder at the coincidence considering the sickening election 'promise' by the toxic tories about making it legal to ban trans people from using 'gendered' facilities, 'gendered' sports -such as trans women being excluded from female sports because they may have a physical advantage over cis women (something already debunked BY TRANS WOMEN! And probably trans men). What really is sickening, is that the policy is kind of promising a witch hunt focused solely on a person's naughty bits. You know, the bits we ALL cover up in public and are of absolutely no business of anyone else AT ALL. So, exactly how will this go? Do we all have to flash a toilet monitor to prove our gender before we go into a public loo? Because that is the only way they can actually prove if a person is truly cis gender. sucky sunak and the toxic tories are VILE
