Hey man, just found your channel, and I'm loving the relatable content with the restoration jobs. I'm in the process of bringing a 50 year old laser up to speed, and I can really feel your freedom and commitment. Love the content, and the moth looks like some real good fun.

I’m glad you like the content! A 50 year old Laser will come up great i’m sure, maybe you can track down a carbon top section and a turbo kit for it!

Wow carp strikes were not on my list of sailing hazards, though I have hit catfish before in the river. I wonder if thats another reason why nobody sails moths in the Brisbane River clubs, hitting a Bull shark at umteen knots seems like a bad idea.
@TomStuchberySailing5 күн бұрын
It wasn’t something i had thought of before either, normally jellyfish are the problem down here!
@finndawgy5 күн бұрын
What a video Tom! Some great drone footage. Is that from a dji mini or something? I didn't realise how heavy carp can get. Hopefully the carp you hit have an eternal sleep. - less for more people to run into. I was scared when you started sinking! You did well to get in! I enjoyed the vlogging video style. So many issues that come up! That pastie sure looked delicious! Great video Tom, I look forward to the next one!
@TomStuchberySailing5 күн бұрын
Thanks Finn, apparently the Carp overseas get even bigger! Yeah, its a Mini 3, i got a slightly older model since i figured it might end up getting wet. The pastie was awesome!
@finndawgy5 күн бұрын
@TomStuchberySailing great to hear! You do have to be careful of the downward obstacles sensors over water. Sometimes they can stuff up the height approximation and say your either higher or lower than you actually are. The best way is just to keep line of sight with it. If you get too low to the water it can also go into landing mode as it thinks it is lower than it really is. Just a few things to be vigilant of. Thanks Tom
@TomStuchberySailing5 күн бұрын
I noticed that, it was all over the place with the altitude readout. I didn’t click that it would be because of the water, thanks!

I once hit a carp with my ilca. My first thought was that I hit ground until I saw that massive fish appear that I knocket flat out. I can't imagine how it feels with a fast boad like a moth. Probably like a plain crash. Anyway - great video!

Sail the boat first before you try to put lipstick on the pig, it looks like an excellent piggie too!! It's for the little kid remember, not the big kid, go sailing!
@TomStuchberySailing10 күн бұрын
I did think about that, but the lipstick would look better if its under the new paint, not over 😉 also im finding quite a lot of bare timber under the leaves where the paint has come off, so its probably best to fix that up ASAP

Love your videos. You don't show how you are prepping the areas for epoxy. Obviously it is absolutely fundamental that they are completely dry, clean (use acetone always), and sound (IE any loose or broken materials are removed and ground back). I would also be using wedges to open up the crack while the resin seeps in under gravity, remove the wedges when leaving the resin to cure obviously! Also, if the resin kit you are using creates an amine blush when curing you must rub this down, clean with water, dry and then clean with acetone before applying a second coat or resin (if not then two layers won't bond). I'm just sharing learnings from my own mistakes so please take them as constructive input!
@TomStuchberySailing11 күн бұрын
All very good lessons, i probably should cover those at some point! I didn’t worry about the prep too much inside the hull void since its a brand new bit of boat. The amine blush is a really good point, in some of the shots you might be able to see the blush around the mainsheet bridle attachments i put on a few episodes ago, it is quite bad, but i havent cleaned it up yet!
@timmedcalf135711 күн бұрын
OK. Bear in mind that it won't bond to a surface which has the residue of soapy water for example. Also, any new resin surface will need to be abraded/keyed to create a basis for the epoxy bond. Let's see what happens!
@TomStuchberySailing11 күн бұрын
Also a good point! Hopefully its like mechanically stuck in there and cant fall out anyway 😉

Gold! - You need to paint all your boats in "Stuchberry Gold" paint..... As to the bow sprit, what about making it pivoting by adding a small curved track on the deck?
@TomStuchberySailing18 күн бұрын
Haha like the old Ichi Ban Farr 52 colour! I did think about the curved track idea but i think for now it might be easier to just keep it simple and then add articulation later if required

Awesome boat and project.my 2 cents on the prod...cut a hole in the topside near the gunwale just back from the bow.Have the prod go through the hull and you can beef it all up inside.Run it on a slight angle so the end of the prod is on the centreline.This won't interfere with any if the existing structure or forestay etc.
@TomStuchberySailing20 күн бұрын
Ive been thinking about that too Brett, i’m just wondering if there is much benefit to adding a retractable pole if I’m not racing, and therefore not worried about it on a start line? I suppose boat handling around marinas would be better with a retractable pole, and it would keep the weight out of the ends

@TrevC-co6xk20 күн бұрын
Very intriguing boat..so exiting to get a new boat and find all the little surprises on board..theres some nice gear there! As for fitting that bowspit, I'd be bending some flat alumimium (50x 2mm 0r 3mm) around a pole 180° then turning back 90° each side with a vise, to make a couple of large saddles. Like the type you use to fit copper plumbing pipe. ld make them 3mm bigger than needed so that 3mm rubber could be fitted between them and the carbon tube ( from the deck all the way around) to take away any hard stress points. Oversise holes in aluminium and nylon washers to seperate the ali from stainless fastenings through deck.( to avoid corrosion) Look forward to seeing this one cruising!

Thats awesome! Would recommend preloading your vang. Youll never get enough through with the ratios we run these days. It takes some fiddling but with a linked boom id say im at 50% vang with rig tension on and i havent pulled any vang on yet. Maybe luca or andrew have a more scientific approach.
@TomStuchberySailingАй бұрын
I did end up preloding the vang with the boat breaker, that helped for sure. I think the main issue is I’ve basically halved the effective vang range by putting that lever there. The lever was from when i was trying to use an existing slot in the deck fairing, but i ended up widening that hole anyway, so i dont need the lever anymore. Hopefully cutting it off and moving the vang block back to where it used you be solves the problrm!

I was on the International Canoe was a nice breeze for a fun float that day. I can say I was the first to be cartwheel from one state to the other many times off a moth a few years back about where you came unstuck. I had a play on a moth for a few years until the lure of the International Canoe drew me back.
@TomStuchberySailingАй бұрын
Yes, i heard you had a moth there for a while. You were flying when you went past me considering there wasn’t much breeze at all, i was hoping youd turn up at the club so i could have a look at your boat!
