This was a fun and inventive way to create a TBR. Sadly, as someone who has finished the first eight books of "The Expanse," I thought that "Cibola Burn" was the weakest one. The first three were a lot of fun and did a great job of rooting everything in realistic science, but I just found "Cibola Burn" to be a bit more derivative and too obvious about what it was influenced by. Sadly, I found books 5-8 to be more of the same. Although they weren't making any money off of it, I wasn't surprised that Universal decided to dump their adaptation when they got to "Cibola Burn." I'll read book nine at some point, but at this point I'm more optimistic that I'd like some of the Abraham fantasy novels better than where he and Franck chose to take the series. Anyway, this video was fun and good luck with your selections.
@libraryunbounded13 сағат бұрын
Oh, I was really hoping this wouldn't be the case with The Expanse... I do agree that Cibola Burn was a bit less exciting than I was hoping and way less epic that the initial books. I liked the interludes and the Miller storyline best but sadly, not a lot of payoff there. Wait, which work was is influenced by? I didn't notice anything but I am not that well read when it comes to sci-fi (yet) 😅
@stigsmcqueen31784 сағат бұрын
@@libraryunbounded To me, "Cibola Burn" just feels like it was too heavily influenced by seasons 1-3 of "Lost." That show had a ton of influences - not just Stephen King, and a handful of books have been written to explain them all. For books 5-6 of "The Expanse," I think they were heavily influenced by a single science fiction book, and that one is blatantly obvious. Note that I don't dislike "The Expanse," and I do think that it's brought a lot of new fans into the genre the same way that the "Lord of the Rings" and "Game of Thrones" adaptations have done for fantasy. I don't know that a lot of readers of "The Expanse" would necessarily try something that's a little daunting by authors like Iain M. Banks, Peter F. Hamilton, or Alastair Reynolds - which I've been told can be intimidating like I've heard "Malazan" described, but I'd bet that many of them would be willing to try something like "Project Hail Mary," which is cool. I think "The Expanse" is a good series for someone who's only ever watched "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" to try, even though I wasn't wild about where they went with it after book 3.

I listened to maybe 10% of From Blood and Ashes and it was so terrible. I couldn't stand the main character's inner monologue. And there are too many good books to waste my time on bad books. And Shadow Rising is up next for me in the Wheel of time series. I'm so irritated with all of the characters and I don't really want to pick it up, but I'm invested in the story and I heard the later books by Sanderson make it all worthwhile. But Shadow Rising is SO long, I'm trying to work up the gumption to make it a priority to read in 2025. 🥴 Great video as usual!

Imajica Clive Barker because it came out when I needed it most and has been there many other times since then. It is something to experience. In a word: majestic. Close 2nd: Boys Life by Robert McCammon. Such a heartfelt and well made story- an ode to childhood long gone, but not lost or forgotten.

The Alienist by Caleb Carr. It's historical fiction set in 19th century NYC. I thought the combination of the time period, development of psychology and criminology, and the political turmoil fascinating. It's the first of a duology. The second is The Angel of Darkness. Which I also recommend btw.

"Be Water My Friend" by Shannon Lee is my favorite of all time. It isn't a self-help book per say, but is more of a guide to helping people understand that when they encounter problems in life, they have preconceived notions and biases that prevent them from exploring every possible solution to that problem. Lee does an outstanding job of enabling her audience to identify how seeing the world in the way that they do influences the decisions that they make in life, and that finding a way to step outside of that can enable them to do the things that will make their lives better in the long run. It's a very personal and introspective book, and I think it's absolutely outstanding.

Lol great video! And you might have already heard this, but SPOILER for Castle in the Air: Howl and Sophie are there for most of the book, but in disguise (it's only revealed at the end). I agree though that it isn't always clear that each novel follows different protagonists. You might(?) enjoy House of Many Ways because Sophie and Howl are more present in that one (and it's been years, but I remember Howl's part being funny). Castle in the Air is definitely my least favorite of the three so I can totally understand dropping it.

Please keep that poem at the beginning of every annual Papercuts! Its black hearted soul belongs there...🖤 And again--you are so good with creating an atmosphere with the sound effects. I found myself bobbing my head during every category reveal. 😆 This is definitely a great new segment for your channel; the comedic delivery is on point! The more you talk about The Wheel of Time series, the more I think I may not enjoy it. The endless character chatter about attire and stupid romances doesn't sound too appealing to me either! 😂 I just keep picturing couples running around in fantasy garb, yelling at each other, and as they do so, they stop mid sentence and admire how great the stitching looks in their tunics and dresses. Then they continue to scream at each other until one or both parties decide to walk away, hanging their heads down in shame, but no, it's not from a broken heart...they just noticed a knot in the lace of one of their riding boots...and then all hell breaks loose (once again) as they try to get it untangled! ⚔ No wonder they call it The Wheel of Time-- it seems like a neverending melodrama about spools of thread! 🤣 (All jokes aside, I still may try to read The Eye of the World, but I will cautiously tip toe rather than nose dive into it. Hehe.) Surprisingly, I really haven't had too many disappointments in my reading this year. I decided a couple of years back that I wouldn't force myself to read badly written books (unless they were personal recommendations from those closest to me), and I've been happier ever since. 😌 I use to give all books a chance, thinking the writing or story would get better as I read more, but a lot of the time that wouldn't be the case. So yeah, life's too short to read bad books. Unless you're doing it for a worthy cause, of course (a.k.a. people that you care about). Thanks for making another cool video, Silvia! Your honesty is always refreshing. Can't wait to see what made the Best of 2024! 📚 🌟

Love the way you presented this. It appeals to my personality perfectly. Thanks for the heads up on Into the Sunken City. I had it on my library TBR because the plot sounded super interesting but I dislike poorly written characters. I'd take a book with virtually no plot and probably enjoy it if connected with the characters. My biggest disappointment this year was a book by Robin Hobb for that exact reason. The writing, world building, descriptions, everything were flawless. But I hated every. single. person. They were all despicable in one way or another and, while I'm sure none of them were really intended to be viewed as good, not having anyone to root for sucked all my enjoyment out of the story. But at least I learned a lesson from that and have a better understanding of my reading tastes. So it's not all bad. 😀 Thanks for the award show, I greatly enjoyed it!
@libraryunbounded2 күн бұрын
Ah, yes. The Sunken City had an amazing appeal to me - I was really hoping for a post-apocalyptic Indiana Jones type of book, but I got YA boredom. And indeed, I'd take an uneventful book with great character work over a bombastic story with annoying characters any day. Sorry to hear about the Robin Hobb book, she has great writing but I have also been annoyed by her characters more than once...

Currently reading the wheel of time (finished book 6 a few days ago) and the author seems to try really hard to make me hate a story that I'd generally love. The sexism in some of these books (ehm ehm fires of heaven) and rand's whole existence are making me very much annoyed. Also some of these books could have easily been way smaller (shout out to the eye of the world for being the most uneventful book in the series with the weirdest last 50 pages). At least the shadow rising had an amazing ending, but fires of heaven and lord of chaos both felt like a bunch of wasted potential
