In 1991, as Pixies were recording Trompe le Monde, Albini told the fan magazine Forced Exposure that Surfer Rosa was "a patchwork pinch loaf from a band who at their top dollar best are blandly entertaining college rock", and said of the band: "Their willingness to be 'guided' by their manager, their record company and their producers is unparalleled. Never have I seen four cows more anxious to be led around by their nose rings."

I met Jason at a daytrotter session immediately prior to a Trashcan Sinatras session. We had a beer and talked Neko Case because he kept a laminated photo of her in his wallet (and I love her too) asking if we could "make him sound like that". I loved that! I had no idea he was who he was until after seeing the TS set and I'll never forget that day, true magic. <3 RIP LEGENDS!

Just relistened to this after Steve died... I would say the bass would be my only thing I would have changed... the drums, vocals, and guitars sound amazing... the bass is just a cloudy woof in the background... id imagine intentional, but distracting at times.

Surfer Rosa is the best album he worked on. In Utero is grossly overrated and if not for his PRODUCTION, it would be nothing more than a footnote as Nirvana's final album.

I immediately was reminded of this video when I heard the news. Steve Albini was and is a legend. It's a shame that people only define him by his history as a bit of a provocateur because he was always incredibly thoughtful and took his work super seriously. RIP

I like some of his stuff now but when I first heard him I'd already got I to his contemporaries - Oldham, callahan, berman and just found him a bit of an also ran hearing him. Just thought he was will oldham wth no outside ideas and not as identifiable. Over time I've warmed to his stuff although I do still think alot of it seems to be made to be part of the scene rather than coming from a truly unique, one off place. He seems like he was a big palace fan and wanted to be like that, very referential of a loose group of artists. Ghost tropic is the one for me, he sounds like he's playing in the dark in the jungle.

Albini is still notorious for obnoxious shit he said in the 80s and I personally did not like the stuff he said about Courtney Love in azerrad's book. But I saw him speak some years back and he was questioned about his past remarks and he was flat out. (no quotes) 'I was young and stupid and very ego-driven I thought it was time to let the whole world have it.' Then when he was asked more deep about that shit he said he made a statement about PC that is very important to not forget!! "Some people may call it political correctness, but I think: is anything wrong with being nice? Why would you want to hurt anyone?' I actually have a recording of the interview in question. I instantly liked him personally. Not only did IT show his growth. But HE showed responsible concern, not by restoring, but contributing. I just loved that. ( I only went there to ask him questions about his gear).

The underlying assumption is that producers don't add value to record is blatantly false. Surfer Rosa being indeed a great illustration they do. This change in mood is more something Steve may want to discuss with his therapist than fixing an actual issue there.
