He writes amazing lyrics and had a good voice, but the actual melodies just don’t match up, usually. Even the Dark Won’t Hide it, Farewell Transmission, and Just Be Simple are among his best songs sonically, and even they pale in comparison to other dark lords like Mark Linkous, Elliott Smith, early Iron and Wine, early Sun Kil Moon, Mazzy Star, etc. He is more like Vic Chesnutt in that it’s 90 percent about the lyrics and the way he delivers them, save a few tracks like “Supernatural”, “Gravity of the Situation”, and “Flirted with You All My Life”.

Not a fan of Albini’s production either. Butch Vig, Gil Norton, and Dave Fridmann are more up my alley.

I met Jason at a daytrotter session immediately prior to a Trashcan Sinatras session. We had a beer and talked Neko Case because he kept a laminated photo of her in his wallet (and I love her too) asking if we could "make him sound like that". I loved that! I had no idea he was who he was until after seeing the TS set and I'll never forget that day, true magic.

It makes sense Albini feels he was insulated from the drinking because Jason kept it straight around Albini, as he had a lot of respect for him

I don't think it was a real problem at this time, the decline began around the Sojourner release I believe.

I immediately was reminded of this video when I heard the news. Steve Albini was and is a legend. It's a shame that people only define him by his history as a bit of a provocateur because he was always incredibly thoughtful and took his work super seriously. RIP

I like some of his stuff now but when I first heard him I'd already got I to his contemporaries - Oldham, callahan, berman and just found him a bit of an also ran hearing him. Just thought he was will oldham wth no outside ideas and not as identifiable. Over time I've warmed to his stuff although I do still think alot of it seems to be made to be part of the scene rather than coming from a truly unique, one off place. He seems like he was a big palace fan and wanted to be like that, very referential of a loose group of artists. Ghost tropic is the one for me, he sounds like he's playing in the dark in the jungle.
