I recall at the time Albini was quite a bit more hostile about Pixies. He called them "bland college rock" at one time.

He's definitely mellowed with age. I heard an interview where he was even being extremely complimentary to Kurt Cobain and how innovative he was. I had to do a double-take.

He said that in 1991 in an article or interview but later, as It is written in "Fool The World" bio of the Pixies, he apologized for those remarks saying that he didn't hold the band reputation as high as he should.

@@windydragon6522 "now" is irrelevant. Pixies THEN is quite a bit more profound. Pixies along with Sonic Youth were absolute watershed American bands. They ushered in that late 80s early 90s "alt" explosion of bands. Who cares if they are "bland" now? Have you heard those recent Stooges albums? Their current incarnation is quite bland compared to their first records that changed the face of rock music forever. Sorry, it can't still be 1969 fifty+ years later. Even Miles Davis' final albums were fairly mediocre.

In 1991, as Pixies were recording Trompe le Monde, Albini told the fan magazine Forced Exposure that Surfer Rosa was "a patchwork pinch loaf from a band who at their top dollar best are blandly entertaining college rock", and said of the band: "Their willingness to be 'guided' by their manager, their record company and their producers is unparalleled. Never have I seen four cows more anxious to be led around by their nose rings."

Surfer Rosa is the best album he worked on. In Utero is grossly overrated and if not for his PRODUCTION, it would be nothing more than a footnote as Nirvana's final album.

The underlying assumption is that producers don't add value to record is blatantly false. Surfer Rosa being indeed a great illustration they do. This change in mood is more something Steve may want to discuss with his therapist than fixing an actual issue there.
