Well done Ed. Some good local comments on this fair city. I liked it and have been there a few times since 2000. I was also there in November last year and visited the districts of Bitterne and Shirley, and another Wetherspoons in Port Solent too. That looked a moneyed area for boaty types. Nice restaurant complex though. The Ford Transit was built there for some 40 years, the factory closing down in 2013, all gone to Turkey now. They were well paid jobs. If you take the train towards Bournemouth, you'll see the cruise terminal, an impressive sight when one of those huge floating 'city's' come in. Next to that is the huge DP World container port. Other than that, there's not much I'd return to look at. I think if you're beach going, you'd go to Southsea or the I.o.W. I think you'd be impressed with both of those last mentioned places. Much better than Portsmouth itself. 👍🇬🇧💯🤔

Not a bad assessment. I've been asked about the city before. It's not a place you'd advise people to go out of their way to visit like London or Brighton or Cambridge, but it's also not dead or a dump like many a town or city in the UK. It does suffer the same decline of the high street as most places. I wouldn't say it is average, I would say it is above average, but maybe not worth a visit as a tourist. It's relatively decent for shopping, and in the past decade it has become pretty good for restaurants. It's got decent nightlife and things to do. But it is a city centre of contrasts, with historic buildings awkwardly sat next to buildings that detract from them. One issue the city really has is getting certain sites redeveloped. Some plots of land in the city centre the council has been talking about its wish to redevelop since the 1980s, and it still hasn't, and other plots of land have seen the businesses closed down and sometimes demolished pending redevelopment and then everything's just stopped and been left abandoned. There are a few plots of land where I think greedy landowners are just sat on derelict land because property in the UK is just generally seen as an investment even if you do zero with it. It does lag a fair few other places in getting abandoned plots redeveloped or brought back into use. As for safety, yes, don't walk through the parks at night, and that particular one mentioned does get Police tape wrapped around it more often than you'd think, but otherwise the city centre is averagely safe. As for neighbouring south coast settlements, the town/city centre cores of Portsmouth and Bournemouth are incredibly run down to a point far below what you'd expect for those settlements, which in contrast makes Southampton look really good.
@mandymclan6 күн бұрын
Bournemouth is a hell hole unfortunately 😮

To be honest, Ramsgate shouldn't really be in this Top 5. I think you're being too harsh here. Sure it has it's run down areas, but it's also got some great spots in it. But I am really surprised that Gravesend isn't in your Top 5. One of the most depressing places I've visited in southern England. The town centre is as dismal as it gets. There's some really pretty looking buildings there, but the town feels very unloved, and there's an air of resignation and grimness that hangs over the place.

So thanks for popping down to the city where I live. Southampton is a bit of an oddball of a city, full of contradictions. I've lived here for about 30 years and seen the city change immensely during that time. Also no offence but that's not Tudor House. Also there are only three cities in Hampshire and Winchester doesn't really count. Portsmouth is probably more dangerous and suffocating a place to live, unless you live in the rich bits, like parts of Southsea, Old Portsmouth or Gunwharf. On abandoned shops. I honestly don't feel like there are many in Southampton. It's nothing like the northern towns which sadly get less private investment. Plus we get over a million cruise passengers visit this city each year. I won't bite lol as I know you're new to this city but you literally pointed toward the cultural quarter and Bedford Place which are arguably the most vibrant parts of the city and called it 'as far as the eye could see, half shut down, every other shop' lol. The building he's referring to in Hoglands Park was a public toilet. It's now been turned into a venue for band practice. It's a locally listed building. On Debenhams, development has been slow due to the pandemic (as has the Bargate Quarter opposite, which was meant to be finished two years ago) but they got permission to demolish Debenhams about a month ago.
