Did you bring a gimbal? I'm debating bringing mine but I'll likely leave it at home since last time an extra hair tie seemed like extra weight. 😊

Hello! We started the Camino on May 13th. We had a misty first morning, but then beautiful weather thereafter. More rain once we hit the Galicia area. And a heatwave in the Los Arcos area. Have a great trip! Buen Camino.

We were on the Napoleon route from Orisson to Roncesvalles. We followed the signs all along the way and the map given at the passport office. There is a section that is shorter and steeper down from the top, but they told us to make sure we stayed right, don’t go left at the wind marker. People who went left had a very hard time with knees and ankles, but going right was tough too.

Hello, we flew into Madrid, and took the train to Pamplona. From Pamplona, we hired the Caminofacil transport company to SJPP. It was the easiest way for us. I hope this helps. We stayed at the Only YOU Hotel Atocha in Madrid because it was right across the street from the train station.

I just got back from doing the last Sarria to Santiago stage and I'm hungry for more. I think about doing that first stage but I have some fears holding me back. What if I get lost? It looks like there are a number of possible routes, how do I know which one to take? But your videos are definitely helping me. I would probably need to break up that first day into two as well. Thank you so much for these videos. I look forward to watching all of your Camino.
@byrdsonawire

Hello! I had the same fears!! And I tried to watch every video I could find on how those first two days would be, and while nothing can truly prepare you for it (not in a bad way, but for how amazingly beautiful it was), I found navigating was the easier part, if that helps at all. I was more worried about my knees, but breaking the day up was definitely the right choice for me. If you do the same, I highly recommend getting reservations for Orisson and Roncesvalles as soon as they are available to make. It was a game changer! I wish you the best and I hope you can get back out there. Sarria to Santiago was so green and lush! 🩵💚

@byrdsonawire
@byrdsonawire Жыл бұрын
After Sarria is about the time I finally decided to send some of my stuff ahead. I bought a second smaller pack, threw extra stuff in there and sent that ahead, and kept my big pack with me, because it was much more comfortable and sized to my body.

How heavy was your pack. How did you train for this Camino.
@byrdsonawire
@byrdsonawire Жыл бұрын
My pack was 25 pounds at the beginning and I could’ve gone lighter for sure. I “packed my fears” as they say. I started training for the Camino a year before I left, that is probably excessive and not necessary. Most people will say 16 weeks prior to leaving. I started my pack weight at 15, and built up from there, eventually carrying 35 lbs, so that when I did eventually leave for the Camino, my pack was actually 10 pounds lighter than what I was used to. I also found some good hill hikes in my area to train on.

My goodness, the quality of your video, narration, music, and photos are superb. Every time I watch and listen, I marvel. My husband and I are watching them all again on this one year anniversary. I learned from you how much video adds to your memories.

I walked the Camino in 2015 when I was 70 and my advice for any "senior" who wants to do this magnificent experience, is "DON'T START FROM ST. JEAN!" It is easy to overlook that the first day of the standard classic route is the longest and hardest of the whole Camino and takes down a lot of pilgrims pro rata. There is only one Auberge on the stage, which you need to reserve a place to get into, and however nice the day sleeping out in the mountains is not for the elderly. Remember the "Official" start is the Monastery at Roncesvalles, where the St. Jean stage ENDS. It is here you should get your "Credential" and it is from here that distances are measured on the Camino de Frances. Roncesvalles is easier and safer reached via Pamplona - there is, or was in 2015, a bus running out to the Monastery every evening - and Pamplona is a wonderful city to rest from your journey out, check and amend your gear, talk to other first-timers and so on. A lot of seniors actually start from Pamplona - you are still a long walk from Santiago - but whether you start Pamplona or Roncesvalles, if you are over about 65 and have not done much walking or training, consider leaving St. Jean for the young people! The Camino is a singular experience about which you can make your own rules - eg, alone or with company, carry or ship your bag, auberge or hotel or both - and it is plain stupid to set off like a rocket and crack on day one. I believe there have been more deaths on the St. Jean leg than any other single stage. BUT, whatever you decide, "Bon Camino!"

Your video footage is some the best I have seen for really capturing what it is like walking the Camino. You have a knack for capturing just the right shots to tell the story of the trail itself. You also have a very pleasant, soothing voice which is easy to listen to. Keep it up! I hope you give us just a little more insight into your internal journey. Awesome video! I am planning for the French Camino in September 2023 This will be my third Camino 2019: From Sarria to Santiago 2022: Portuguese from Porto ( Coast) I am a little nervous about my first 2 days, I am 63 and living in Florida ( everything flat) I really enjoy your video!!

I know the feeling, those first two days scared me too, however it was the third day that was by far the most challenging with the way the trail surface was and the downhill. No one ever talks about the trek into Zubiri, but I will. It was not fun. Could’ve been that we were already tired from Day 1 and Day 2, but nonetheless a lot of our Camino friends struggled on Day 3. Days 1 and 2 we really took our time, enjoyed the scenery and just went at our own pace. I know your Camino Frances will be wonderful, enjoy all the moments!! ❤️Buen Camino!
