From German to English ;-) Serenade to Elisabeth Hear my song, Elisabeth Hear the song from a time long ago: From the old avenue It resounds down to the lake And from every tree It's like a dream Elisabeth At dusk We both walk hand in hand Through the old avenue Over to the lake And happily listen To the magic music, Elisabeth Shadows of the past Look down from the old castle And they beg you Oh, be wise Don't waste* the the time, Or you'll be sorry. Hear my song, Elisabeth Hear the song from a time long ago: Open heart and ear to him And also to that choir That resonates affectionately And brings you greetings, Elisabeth, Elisabeth. *"Versäumen" also means to "neglect", "fail", "forget" and "omit", it is an assessment.

This song was a hit in my home town of Youngstown, Ohio although it only reached #69 on the US Billboard Hot 100..... Remarkably it remained on the US Billboard chart for 12 months making it one of the top fifty selling records in the USA for 1961.

This is the version I remember when I was growing up. Mum was a big fan of Andy Stewart and we watched the Andy Stewart Show on television. His Scottish Soldier was lovely, as a child the meaning of the song went right over my head.

THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT RHYTHMS, SO MANY DIFFERENT ACCENTS, AND TO BE ON PITCH IN THIS KIND OF A PATTER SONG WITH THE AB8LITY SWING, THE BOOGIE-WOOGIE BEAT AND THE WAY OF IT -IT TAKES A GOOD SINGER TO SING THIS! A PERSON WITH TRUE MUSICAL CHOPS! SHE HAD IT! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 #BETTYHUTTON ROCKS!!!

I don't think this has any English words, in spite of being written to celebrate England's second Elizabethan period.
