Read my first Dean Koontz a couple of months ago. I always thought he was one of these poppy and trendy authors who I always saw everywhere. I like him as a shallow, Speculative fiction writer. I think young people might like him better, he has a bit of the teenage boy mentality to his writing. I didn't expect him to be so into the Speculative fiction genre. He also mixes genres a lot. One chapter he is writing straight lit and the next its sci fi followed with horror. His writing is pure escapism weirdness. I read Phantom recently and liked it but it is weird. They made it into a movie in the 1990s with Ben Affleck, never saw it.

Although I've enjoyed my share of Koontz stuff, I've come across certain titles where he uses certain devices a little too repetitively. Not trying to bash him, just sayin'.

I love these lists, even if I've only read a fraction of the books on it. I tend to think The Stand is overrated. That 2nd half is more than just underwhelming to me. I said to myself "King didn't know what to do at this point" and he confirmed that suspicion in an interview. I put it half way at best.

Dark Rivers of the Heart was kind of annoying. It had EVERY single Koontz trope. The unstoppable killer antagonist who has weird sexual hangups and also makes an uncharacteristically dumb decision at the very end. The protagonist who is unfailingly good and has some kind of vague quasi-military background. A hyper-intelligent dog that has been abused or has emotional problems. Characters acting as surrogate mouthpieces for Koontz's libertarian-small government ramblings. Shadowy gov't organizations. An improbable ending. Having said that, I really LOVE Mr Murder, The Voice of the Night, and Icebound. Koontz is second-to-none at building suspense, but I def had a hard time finishing Dark Rivers. It's such a retread of other Koontz novels. I liked Intensity a lot. It's aptly named. Same goes for Velocity. And I definitely liked the Voice of the Night because, unlike so many other Koontz novels, the character Colin was an awkward, clumsy teenager instead of a twenty-something retired military dude who drives around California, getting himself into high speed chases and scrapes with secret organizations bent on his destruction. I also probably liked Voice of the Night as much as I did because I was the same age as the main characters when I read it (14 or 15). Koontz is a great author but once you've read more than five of his books, you've really read them all. He's fun to come back to every few years, but he's so predictable.

Yeah no I don’t think Koontz is for you, I consider phantoms and watchers to be absolutely thrilling masterpieces so if you are meh on those ones then no point carrying on. He has so many good books but yeah a few duds but you are listing his best books as dud 😂 so yeah Dean is definitely not for you. His Jane Hawk series has a fantastic female lead

Anybody who like this novel must have a digging fetish because that is exactly what happened for the first 50 pages, the female protagonist digging a UGO out of the ground in excruciating details,. Oh, she took a break and ate lunch too!

This writer rocks! He haves to be one of the best writers in centuries. We posted a statue from a disrupted person who wants to sue for breach of contract. So, if it isn't the writer someone out there haves the same name....Davis v. Koontz_ 2017 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 25517 ending before the Court is the Motion to Dismiss, (ECF No. 8), filed by Defendant Dean Koontz ("Defendant") to which Plaintiff Raymond Davis ("Plaintiff") filed a Response, (ECF No. 11).1

I think Dean Koontz books are so easy to get through, unlike The Damnation Game by Clive Barker or Ghost Story by Peter Straub which are sloggingly painful to get through.

I’ve never finished any of his books or audiobooks. Idk what it is but I don’t like them. I tried lightning and dnfed 4 chapters in. Phantoms the audiobook narrator is my all times least favorite(not that he’s bad his voice just doesn’t resonate with me and I can’t pay attention) I’ve tried intensity book and audio(will be trying it again) and a bunch more a few years ago. I’ve finally come to I’m just not a fan. There was one audiobook I finished and the ending pissed me off so bad it ruined everything else

Definitely in the Pro-Tommyknockers camp. This is absolutely one of the most underrated books. I put it off for some time because of what others have said about it, I’m sad I did, but, I’m glad I finally read it. I loved it. I think what a lot of people are missing about this book, is that it seems, to me at least, to be an allegory for a communist up-rising. Words like “becoming,” for example are explicitly communistic. They talk at one point in the book about Haven being a successful “collective.” Communism is all about a collective society. The Tommyknockers want to “improve,” just another word for progress. But, progress for the sake of progress is a very bad thing. To me, this was Stephen King’s Animal Farm.

Thaaaaank you. The rambling cocaine fueled tangents worked in this novels favor. The structure of the story and the "point" at the heart of it made everything cohesive. Do not understand why people hate this one so much.

I tried Koontz on several occasions. His plots often interest me, but I get bored with his storytelling and stop caring about what happens and how the story will turn out. I don’t believe I’ll attempt anymore of his books. He’s just not for me. A favorite writer of mine is Peter Swanson.

I read everything but Jane Hawks books by Koontz..... and all of Stephen King too. Koontz is a great wordsmith who loves wordplay and dialogue but some doesnt age well. STRANGERS is his first great book and Stranve Highways his only short story collection..the short stories are themes he revisits ...oh and Shadowfires is a great horror novel under the pseudonym Leigh Nichols...while his recent works are really hit or miss....there are still great books and parts of great books and the best thing is they are fast reads ...very fast reads but worth a revisit.

Lol I specifically mention in several reviews that Koontz’s bad guys always hate books and don’t read. It’s like dude we get you love books but not everyone does. In fact more people probably don’t care much for books. You’re right he is campy and cringy lol.

Intensity and Odd Thomas are my 2 favorite. For the most part his charter development is poor in most of his books, when he dose children it is so bad it's funny you wonder if he has ever talked to a child. It is where King shines I do like some of plots of Koontz books better but great charter development keeps me engaged.

That was a really thought provoking queston. I never asked myself that question. So, for me I think the most evil person is the one that was closest to Rosemary. Guy is the most evil because he allowed the coven to "use" his wife!
