As a retired special ed teacher it is illegal per ADA which is federal law. The need for confidentiality is not something that should be given away. As a teacher I saw, I don't remember the year,😢TV's that had 2 way video capacity be put in every classroom and office at the high school level. I demanded it be removed due to confidentiality. I was initially told not to unplug it. I had my students do it. This was prior to the pandemic. There is more to this story if you are interested feel free to ask. I was an active member of Occupy Stockton and took the city to court on a different issue that was relevant via the 1st Amendment and I won.

As a librarian, I concur. It is a dangerous thing to stay off the printed word. I even go as far as to keep paper copies as much as possible. eBooks and the internet archive can be used as absolute last resorts for people who have limited space in their houses or their home libraries

No f*cking way. When I read a meaty book with substance (surely anything by Chris Hedges for example) I sometimes go over passages again and again to contemplate all the implications of them. And I'll even go back to certain sections a year or more later, when some relevant event happens. By next week I will have forgotten a lot of the content of a podcast.

Chris seems to imply here that people in non literate societies were not capable of complex thought. This is not a tenable position. The issue I think has to do with the type and quality of attention. See Iain M Gilchrist's book The Master and his Emissary. But yes we are indeed "distracted from distraction by distraction".
