I considered that VERY briefly, but there are parts on this TJ that are no longer in production, more specifically around the TDI swap, that I want to keep otherwise I think that might be a consideration. Also I could not get nearly enough out of this TJ selling to start the build over again. That hard top alone cost as much as the TJ when I bought it back in 2017. I have so many parts on this TJ that I want to reuse that in the end it's much cheaper to find a LHD TJ and just swap everything over, and when it's running, sell all the parts that I ended up not using.

Thanks for the support! I'm definitely keeping all my options open for the time being! I did just find out this morning that there is a tuner that can adjust the idle rpm of my BEW TDI down to 700 rpm which kind of changes several things. I think I'm going to try that first, see how the engine does with a 700rpm idle, if it seems to work, then I need to pull the AW4 transmission again and put the stock torque converter back in and see how everything does together. Once I do that, I'll figure out my next steps. I wasn't expecting to find out that information this morning, I thought I was stuck with my current idle speed.

Maybe an R2.8 with something like the 8HP70. Plenty of good content in that swap. and by that time if you're not comfortable with RHD (I know I wouldn't be) trade or sell. There would be ton of interest in that build I think. Best of luck with your decision over the holidays.

Thank you! I got the inspiration to do a diesel TJ because of Tube Sock from Dirt Every Day, I've been wanting to run the T2.8 for years but I just never had the money for it, though looking back at all the money I've sunken into this project I could have easily afforded it by now. I really like the TDI, it's light, small, powerful and relatively cheap as well which makes it a great option!

@@RustyAutoholicGuy Nate at Dirt Lifestyle did a video with Ian Johnson comparing there swaps (Nate did a vw TDI, Ian did a cummins) and it was surprising close in cost even when you consider the time/effort Nate had to put in to get the TDI dialed in. Looking at the long game, I bet if you sold some parts you'd be close the gap on the cost of just going to what very likely could be your final solution. Just a thought.

You're not wrong and I need to look up that video, I don't think I've watched that one yet! I actually found out late last night and I'm waiting to hear back this morning that there might be a way to lower the idle RPM now on my BEW TDI. So I think I'm going to go down that rabbit hole a little bit as that would be the easiest solution to all the issues that I'm currently fighting with my build.

I've considered that and several other options as well, a dome mirror like they use on bus etc. The truth is there are also several hard to replace parts on the Right Hand Drive, particularly the steering components and anything to do with the suspension that make it ideal to switch to a Left Hand Drive. I have a set of TJ Rubicon axles I've been wanting to install for a while now but the mount brackets are mirrored. Sure I could fab up new brackets but if I had a Left Hand Drive TJ, they would bolt directly in. If it were just one of these issues I could easily work around it however you put them all together and it doesn't make living with the Right Hand Drive as easy.
@coachgeo
@coachgeo 22 күн бұрын
@@RustyAutoholicGuy all very valid points. With your knowledge and tools.... your in a catch 22. You could even sell it now cause its novelty gives it value... maybe swap in NV3550 , Rubi Tcase out / put in NP231 . Use that money to get another dime a dozen TJ.. swap in your Rubi parts and another TDI or MB-om6xx.

I actually just found out from tuner that is now possible to idle this BEW TDI at 700rpm so I think I'm going to try that before I make any other decisions. I actually really like this engine and transmission combination other than the fact that it doesn't want to work well together. I'm going to try this new tune with a lower idle and see what happens. If the lower idle works, I'll then swap the stock torque converter back into the AW4 and see how it all works together and then make a decision before I move forward with everything.

I've had one of these for a while now and I love it. I'm sure you've found out by now that it doesn't have double overdrive but a multi displacement engine which means when you get up to 55 or so the engine will run on fewer cylinders for better gas mileage.Also on the 5.7 you have to use the proper oil or it will let you know. When I first got mine someone put the wrong spark plugs in it so it ran rough and died a lot, there are 16 spark plugs and they run around $17.00 a piece. Fixed the problem.

I really appreciate the offer! I've thought about the left-hand drive conversion, but honestly I think I'm going to look for an Impact Orange LHD TJ. Good to see you back, been watching your channel, and your challenges since Covid. You inspired me to do my own swap on my '05 LJ of the Core 4x4 TrackBars and swaybars. Thank you for that. Also, on the subject of overheating, the TJ's (and LJ's) are notorious of heat buildup in their engine bays. I installed an aluminum hood vent on my LJ last year, which alleviated overheating, especially at idle. All the best to you over the Holidays.

Wow! I'm sure glad I never considered an automatic for my swap! I wonder if your tuner could drop the idle RPM a couple hundred revs. I believe the Ford flex plate/torque convertor is heavy enough to even out the pulses at the lower speed. Don't know what to tell you about the RHD thing. That would take some getting used to!

I'm no longer running the Ford 6r80 but an AW4. I actually went down the rabbit hole of seeing if the RPM could be lowered on my BEW TDI and the answer is not really, it can be lowered to about 885 rpm, but a 35rpm drop is not going to solve the issues I'm having.

Unfortunately it's not that simple, the firewalls are completely different, I'd have to cut out the firewall and weld in a Left Hand Drive TJ firewall, and to be 100% honest, that is out of the scope of what I'm able to do in my shop. Also 4l80 and TH400 both would have the same issues I'm having now. A manual valve body wouldn't solve the issues I'm having unfortunately.

When measuring the height of the four corners of your jeep, since you are measuring from your flat garage floor, would it possibly be better to have measured from the floor to the lower edge of the fender flair rather than from the edge of the tire?? I've been researching an engine swap for my JKUR for my somewhat unique needs. My Jeep is built for rock crawling and difficult trails, with 1 ton axles and 38s (soon to be 40s). But what makes it unique is that it's my daily driver as well as tow rig for our 15' E-Pro camper. I'm looking for a balance of increased fuel mileage, especially while towing, as well as more power (mainly torque) and reliability. I would love to be able to use either a VW TDI or a Cummins R2.8, however I fear the TDI won't have enough power to see a significant increase in towing ability, and I fear the weight of the heavy Jeep and camper (a little under 3500#) would stress the small TDI. And the Cummins just doesn't make enough HP and torque above what I have now to justify the swap. Ideally, for my needs, this is where a 4BT or Isuzu diesel would shine. When I had a 4bt in my old Durango, it pulled great and got great MPG while doing it. Unfortunately I can't legally swap a 4bt in where I am, and any modern larger diesel with OBD2 has reliability and maintenance concerns.

Sorry for the two week delay on responding to this, work has been crazy. Honestly having played with the TDIs, the do great with a turbo, tune and a big intercooler. That being said, I would see the benefit of the Cummins R2.8. What transmission are you running?
@jimalton1564
@jimalton1564 Ай бұрын
@RustyAutoholicGuy My Jeep currently has the Nag1 5 speed auto, but I'm not opposed to swapping that as well. If I go the Hemi route, I'll probably use the 8hp70 because of the better gear ratios and all around better transmission. If I can solve the diesel problem then I'd use whatever matches that particular diesel the best.
@RustyAutoholicGuy
@RustyAutoholicGuy Ай бұрын
@@jimalton1564 I have power and internet back again!!! So as far as I know, there isn't an aftermarket controller for the NAG1, also I'm not sure there is an adapter for yet either, though TDConversions might have one. I know several companies are working on a 8HP controller, I think there is one out on the market as well. A TDI would work, though I would go Common Rail like the CJAA because it's a cross flow head with 4 valves per cylinder instead of 2 valves per cylinder like the ALH AND BEW. I've always been a fan of the Cummins R2.8 but have never had the budget for one so I can't comment on it's performance.
