Yet to try this on my flute, but when I first saw this I went ahead and tried to relax my tongue down and tongue, and I was amazed! It works with double tonguing too! Thanks for literally breaking down the wall I had for so many Accompanied Solos (Like the Poulenc Sonata or the Presto of Cantible et Presto), definitely makes my way through college more akin to a stroll than a stressed out army crawl.

I wish you would show your hands as you play. Were you playing harmonic fingerings for the high E to F’s? It would be helpful to see your technique.

Imitating is a great, versatile and artistic and sensible way of studying music....this is, who children learn to spaß ( muscle, tongue, laguage placement.....phrasing etc)...BUT it is also important to have the knowledge about what you d and how to use your Tools...otherwise you start to develop unhealthy techniques

I have just found your video and I’m so intrigued about learning your technique. My history. I’m a small town learner 1975. No private lessons because they were not available. Just a very nice teacher that got me through from fifth grade to 12th grade. I’m a music learner so I would love to see the written music that you’re talking about at the same time

Sad. If this is where we are as humanity - my nation is better than yours - pathetic. Fact - many non-French nationals can play French music even better. Many times better.

I am sick of prople who constantly harp on how much better something is because of geography and politics. Isn’t it enough to enjoy everything for its own beauty and knock off all this false nationalistic bravado? There is a kid in Santa Monica whose throat singing is angelic.

I remember my first lesson with Robert over 2 decades ago. It was at Penny Kemler’s house after the LFS convention. I remember being introduced to 1. Throat tuning (which changed my life) and 2. Having “An Actor Prepares” recommended to add to my reading list (which was purchased on the way home) and 3. Spending a few minutes on circular breathing and thinking “I don’t see this one happening”. BUT…. 20+ years later, with growth and maturity and experience and several more lessons with Robert, I can say that throat tuning is still just as epic, I recently found that copy of Stanislavsky and who knows about circular breathing? 🤷🏼

I can’t sing above f above middle c due to a parathyroidectomy which nicked my superior laryngeal nerve. I almost lost my voice and I was a speech/language pathologist as well as a flutist. I’ll try.

This is such a dangerous technique for beginners, that it should come with a label warning. This is how I got a blocked throat in my first year. And boy, was I proud of my oboe sound, haha. Zero support, zero projection, all throat. Sounded great, until I heard my teacher on our first lesson play with a completely different color, twice as loud, twice as long and without any effort at all. On my flute! It took us a whole year to fix this problem, strangely also by "singing and playing", but in the correct way for a beginner. So, if you're a beginner, especially one that self-teaches from videos, run away. Come back in a few years when you can slur up to the 6th harmonic and down again without any variation or effort. Then you WILL actually benefit from this technique, because it does indeed work.

Changing embrochure is an important step in reaching low notes in the low brass family. Jaw movement is something brass players have to do constantly (moving the lip forward for low tones and back for high tones) without screaming on the high end or going sharp on the low end. Please next time specify when you’re specifically talking about one instrument family.
