Thanks for a great video! The appearance of the system looks very much like windoze, specially the login screen. Apart from that, it seems like a well designed desktop experience. Not everyone will agree with the flatpak solution, just my opinion.
@itsfoss4 күн бұрын
I see most distributions opting for Flatpak solution. Going entirely Flatpak is a bold move, not wrong or right. Now that you mentioned login screen, I can see the resemblence ;)

I used to daily drive eos because it has very consistent ui. But day by day, it clearly got left behind by other. I move out to fedora starting when they use Gnome 4x series. Unless there's major update, i don't think i would be back

Nice summary and group of tips for anyone looking for a mini-PC case for the PI
Is this good for someone looking for a midweight distro that looks good or is it too heavy?. I tried Zorin and loved the look but a few glitches and a rare freeze made me want something that feels more stable.
@itsfoss5 күн бұрын
I would call it a midweight distro. Pantheon is not as light as Xfce but it is not as heavy as GNOME. But the decision will be yours. eOS is not what it used to be in the past.
@softwarelivre23895 күн бұрын
Wayland support fixes the technical debt elementaryOS had, so that's a major step for the future of the distro. It lost a lot of momentum when Cassidy left tho, and they still didn't fully recover from that blow.
@itsfoss5 күн бұрын
That I agree. After Cassidy left, eOS just stalled there. Not much progress and it's quite visible.

@Itsfoss Exactly. Once the project became the head dev's jobs, they did just enough to keep the patron money coming in.
@itsfoss5 күн бұрын
@@error4159 They had some innovative ideas. But 2-3 members team could not execute it perfectly, although they did work in that regard. And after the split of the lead devs, the distro just stalled. If I be honest, I don't see much hope for eOS and not enough enthusiasm about it from the creators as well.

Nothing new as far as i am concerned and it is difficult as well to bring something revolutionary at this point because it is a mature distro. i need minimize button by default (i use mouse alot) and eOS does not provide it. i need to use tweak tool for a little customization but once i enable minimize button everything looks odd somehow. that is how i moved away from eOS. COSMIC could be a game changer imo.
@itsfoss5 күн бұрын
COSMIC OS indeed will be something refreshing, something new. elementary is playing safe by introducing subtle changes here and there but staying close to their standard look and feel.

Thank you for this video, you have really helped me. I plan to make my first ever sbc having watched them evolve from the first raspberry pi. It is funny that you mention import charges. Here in the UK we want free trade with India and our friends and allies. Why should we have to pay tarrifs? (its just another tax). When I saw the first SBC's I thought they will eventually replace pc's i.e atx etc. That is happening for sure! Slowly but surely we will all use SBC's. Thankyou once again and God bless 😊

Glad you liked it, Paul. Customs are a pain, specially for us end users :( Most of these DIY electronics are manufactured in China and thus the import tax comes into play as per the laws between two countries.

I don't recommend this distribution, I was 7 days with this version and the ubuntu-gnome is very annoying when I split screen for two windows, also some times the gnome blocked when I cicked a key "windows". My last mistake happened yesterday when I was trying to install a docker, I have to restart my PC and now I couldn't enter to my profile, I don't know why but later of 10 years using ubuntu this is the fisrt version LTS's unstable. I'm searching ubuntu 22 for test if is more stable before to install

Here is a Python script I wrote to scan a subnet for responses on TCP 22 and 3389 (SSH and RDP). It uses the unsync library to speed things up. I also use UV to run it which reads the comments in the first few lines to determine dependencies and "pip" install them. # /// script # requires-python = ">=3.12" # dependencies = [ # "ipaddress", # "unsync", # ] # /// from contextlib import closing from unsync import unsync import ipaddress import socket import time @unsync def check_socket(host, port): with closing(socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)) as s: s.settimeout(0.2) return s.connect_ex((host, port)) == 0 inuse = 0 start = time.time() net4 = ipaddress.ip_network('192.168.0.0/24') targets = [] # for target in net4.hosts(): for target in net4: t_IP = socket.gethostbyname(str(target)) iplist = [t_IP] for port in [22, 3389]: check_return = check_socket(t_IP, port) iplist.append(check_return) targets.append(iplist) for target in targets: print(target[0], end = "") ipused = False if target[1].result() == True or target[2].result() == True: ipused = True if ipused: print(" In use") inuse += 1 else: print(" Available") end = time.time() print(f'Time taken {end-start:.2f} seconds') print(f'Hosts connected: {inuse}')

Many thanks for your content, but unfortunately this does not work (for me): I have setup a Virtual Machine on macOS 12, installed Ubuntu 24.04 Desktop Client on it and made all the tweaks you showed. The appimage I want to open (a installation file for a game called Freeciv) does not do anything.
@itsfoss19 күн бұрын
I tested and yes, there seems to be a problem with glibc version. You can see the errors if you try to run the appimage from the terminal. I suggest running appimage from terminal and using the error messages to open a bug with freeciv developers.
