This video will be the first in a what I’m hoping is a short series in the kind of maintenance and or upgrade of a pretty old weird hunting from the early 1950’s. The rifle in question the Savage 340 this particular is the no letter designation so if you have one of these rifles there were many variants and upgrades. The variants being the A,B,C,D,E, and S. Most of the letter changes were made based on small parts needing to be changed to work for new calibers introduced to the system. The S variant was just a nicer version with a different rear sight and a checkered stock. Hopefully you liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions, comments, additional information, or user experiences. Thank you all for watching.

I have a model 340 as well. Mine does have a mark after model 340 cant tell if its an a or what. I got it as gift from my grandfather that got it from a lady while he was doing work for her. I've had it for 7 years now and will never get rid of it. She's a lil rough and was neglected. Last year was the first year i had a problem. I was hunting and went to load a round into the chamber and when i slid the bolt forward it fired all by its self.

Just purchased a 340 C 30/30 in excellent shape and the side mount scope base , Then 3-9 weaver scope was purchased so I have about $ 450 in the items and going to load some pointed 30 cal bullets in this cartrige to see what they will do !!! Very nice gun to have and I'm looking for some other calibers in that model to buy . Enjoyed your video . Dave Cook

I have 2 of these 340s and a 99. All are 30-30 and are loaded with 130 grain spire points and 4 grain over max +p loads. NO problems with the loads in these rifles. So much for the rifles and brass are weak and won't take it, yea right. These loads make the 30-30 a whole different round.

I have a savage foremost 6400 in 30-30. Its patterned almost exactly like the 340. It came with the original side mount and a weaver 4x marksman. I think I got it for a total of $300

I have one. It is a 340, no letters. I have a continual problem with the magazine allowing the rounds to extend up at an angle causing a jam when I charge the first round. I load the magazine then push the round back down. the second and third seem to be fine. Maybe I need a new magazine. It shoots pretty good at 100 yards, I need to check it at a 200 yard range. Where did you find yours?

So to solve the magazine problem for you I had it on all 3 of my magazines. All you need to do is bend the feed lips on the back part of the magazine in and down a slight bit more

@@DevinK That's what I had to do to one of my mags. Also it was a repo mag not a factory original.

@@Sabe53 at least they are easy enough to bend then they work well.

@@DevinK I'm in south korea actually. we can own body armor and plates. we only have surplus stores that sell clothes for mountaineer grandfathers. I'm so jealous of people who live in NA or Europe. but we can easily approach to retired US army stuffs thanks to US forces in korea.

I nabbed this rifle from my dads closet, its been taken to the range once in the last 30 years probably, still has the dookendorf irons, im new to rifle shooting and have seen this gun my whole life and i want to see if i can get any good with it 🤙

This is not a bad rifle to start out with, but if you get good at rifle shooting, you will outgrow this rifle. Due to the barrel band, single action screw, and poor bedding, they generally won't group better than 1 inch and usually closer to 11/2". Fine for hunting at 30-30 ranges, but not target grade accuracy. When you get better, you can start looking at a new rifle!

I dont know who told you that the 30-30 outperforms the 30-06 and 300 win mag, but I wouldn't listen to them anymore! It is important to match the bullet design to the game animal and range/velocity considerations. That being done, the 30-30 will never outperform the 30-06 or 300 mag. 30-30 is a great cartridge in its own right and earned that due to its balance of power and light recoil in handy rifles for general hunting. That rifle appears to be in excellent condition. Remember , changing things like the original stock is not restoring but rather customing. There is nothing wrong with that, as it is not a valuable collectible and never will be. Make it your own. I have several of them. One is staying original while the others have various amounts of custom work. I am modifying one into a heavy barrel, single shot, target rifle right now. One last thing, keep your ears open, you can learn something from some of these old fudds!
