What would be advice you would give for an artist that is trying to write and illustrate his comic by oneself? Would it be best to try self publishing or trying to send it around to places like image or dark horse etc in your opinion? I apologize if im asking to many questions or anything to be honest i just would like someone who's a professional to voice there opinion on those things for me. Also side note i have a sketch you did for my sister she gave me recently that was done back in 2003 of a witchblade face that i treasure now 😂

I really wish mainstream comics were MORE collaborative. I get a full script from my editor, draw in isolation, get a note or two from the writer for minor tweaks, later I get a preview of the colors, I can ask for minor tweaks, and that's it. Product hits the shelf and everyone moves on. There are so many ideas and approaches to the storytelling that could have made the book more interesting if there had been even a Zoom meeting beforehand, but you don't want to rock the boat if you don't want to get replaced.
@FrancisManapulArt16 күн бұрын
Yeah thats a tough way to work. That was certainly the case my first year at DC, but tbh once I started working with collaborative writers it unlocked the next level for me artistically which resulted in a better story. After that, all my work in the mainstream had similar collaboration as I show here with Pete. You just gotta feel the writer out to see how open they are. In my experience it's really about building up the trust in the relationship. Thats why you see the same team work together often. Best of luck with everything!

how do you do to keep going when you get an awful story? I recently recived a script for a 10 page story, in a kinda popular company here in my country, and I was really excited, Right now has passed 1 week since I recived the story, and I have all layouts, 3 and a half pencil and half page inked, I start at 100%, I stop working at my regular job, that isnt anything to do with art, at 4 pm. the first day I did most of the things I told you. They dont put me any pressure on deadlines. But is hard, the script is awful, not the story itself, that I think is very interesting, but the way it is writed, the dialogues, all the stuff feel weird and it isnt better as something I could do on my own, and I'm terrible at writing stuff... have you ever face something like that? get a bad script or a bad executed story? I can finish this 10 pages, but Im affraid I coudnt finish something larger with this kind of stories. And I also have to clarify, I wont get payed, they say to me that the thing will be published online and that this is a great way of showing up as a newcomer. so I got to put my everything in this... and I cant,, each day I draw less and less of this story.
@FrancisManapulArt16 күн бұрын
Thats a tough one. Specially if you're not getting paid and only getting exposure. It's really up to you what you decide to do. You could consider this a test of your abilities. When this becomes your profession you won't always get enjoyable scripts to work with, as a professional you're still expected to deliver. So you have to find something in the work you can enjoy. Maybe it's trying out now camera angles, or improving your figure drawing or anatomy. It's all a chance to learn. That said, if you feel you could do something on your own and use social media platforms to share it you can certainly do that as well. The way I look at it, is that it's all an opportunity to learn and improve.
@matuvarela376015 күн бұрын
@@FrancisManapulArt Thats interesting, I didnt think about it that way. It is an opportunity to test and improve things, and be more effective in my own works in the future. I have been working on a comic book for a while now. Recently, I was laying down the pencil work of a flashback scene where the mother sacrifices herself to save her young son (the main character) in front of him. Drawing the mother the moment right before she falls through the ice, their eyes connecting for the last time, both realising what was going to happen, and then the emotion afterwards on the son's face, I actually chocked up myself during drawing. I could not only see the scene, but even hear the scene and the feeling just overwhelmed me. That was the first time I realised I was incredibly passionate about this project, and that I am actually creating something with a meaning that could move people. Seeing you guys go through this as well shows me even more the power that the stories of a comic book can hold, so much power that even the creators (who make the choices) can tear up. Lots of love and admiration to your work🔥

really good video. Question, do you have to draw on comic book templates, say like from Image Comics, like I am doing right now with my own work? I am a future comic book artist who is also writing his first comic book series and also drawing it.
@FrancisManapulArt2 ай бұрын
You don't have to draw on the template, but you have to keep the proportions of a comic book page.

I don't mean to be mean, but I just don't get it. What's the point of starting a new company just to do the same thing everyone else is doing? Does the world really need a bunch of more forgettable superheroes?
@FrancisManapulArt3 ай бұрын
I get it. Typically, in the creator owned space, depending on your publishing deal, you own either a part or in whole the property you create. However, our structure is drastically unique in that we own all the characters and the company collectively. I don't just own what I create I own a part of everything we create. We fail and succeed together. As for the characters all we can do is try to make them as memorable as we can as we try to do with all our work. We all love comics and we've kinda done it all so why not try something new to keep things fresh for ourselves, and hopefully for others.
@VirideSoryuLangley3 ай бұрын
@@FrancisManapulArt Thanks for the answer. That's pretty much what I expected to hear when I clicked on the video, sort of the raison d'être for this company.
