Is doing this cheaper than buying potatoes in the store?

About the bags. Do they transpire? Does O2 and water transpire through them or are they impermiable?
@vanmeuwenplants3 жыл бұрын
They are semi permeable and have drainage holes in the base.

Hello. I have a oriental lily plant someone bought me for mothers day at Walmart, I have it inside but am wondering what the best thing to do with it? Will it last inside ?
@vanmeuwenplants3 жыл бұрын
Oriental lilies are best grown outside as they need plenty of light. They are perfectly hardy so they can live outside all year round. Once they have flowered, just let them die back naturally and then cut back the stems in autumn. Next spring they willl send up new stems arnd start all over again.

Hi there. Great video. I'm a school teacher and want to plant some potatoes in grow bags like this video. I'm worried that I won't have the time before the end of term to chit the potatoes and harvest them in time by the end of the school year. Would it be okay to sow my seed potatoes in the grow bags without chitting? Thank you
@vanmeuwenplants3 жыл бұрын
Hello - That is a tricky one as they wont have quite enough time to make a decent crop now. However I think it is a worthwhile (and fun) process to go through with children and even if the crop is very tiny, they can still gain a good undeerstanding of the process! In future years I would recomend that you chit them in February and get them planted early. Keep them somewhere frost-free until late spring. Opt for a first-early variety and aim to harvest as late as possible. You will definately get better results :)

There are so many to try that it really comes down to personal preference, but you may find that some of the modern blight resistant varieties offer the best results

Hello, yes it is - but they do need a lot of light so they are best grown outdoors, unless you have a bright conservatory.

Hi thanks for the great video.. Can yiu reuse the soil for the next crop harvest of potatoes?
@vanmeuwenplants4 жыл бұрын
It's best to use fresh soil each year as the previous crop will have depleted any nutrients, and it also prevents soil borne diseases being spread.

I moved from my home with my Lilies trees and after 11 years that I had them, I didn't remember how to plant them. I realize that they are not as far in the soil that I am supposed. But they had flowers. Can I replace them at 8 inches in the soil and when??
@vanmeuwenplants4 жыл бұрын
Hello. You can certainly replant your Lilies - in fact it will probably do them good to have fresh soil. Wait until the foliage has completely died back in autumn and then you can lift them and replant.

We grow beautiful Japanese lilies that smell amazing. When, not if, you get the beetles cup your hand under them and poke them, they will let go and try to hit the ground to hide. You'll catch them and then crush them. When you pick one up they emit a "scream". The brown clumpy cocoon the larva make is actually their excrement they make to protect themselves. Also, especially here in NY, you MUST deer spray your lilies otherwise the deer will 100% find them and chew them down. They are like candy to deer.

I did this and it was a huge success. I had golden spids growing and I harvested them because there were potatoes bulging out the sides. Some were really big and I got about 40 of them per bag. that is not bad at all. They went really well with spaghetti hoops and chicken burgers lol yum.

Hello. This sounds like whitefly. You can spray with a pesticide or if you prefer environmentally friendly methods then try the predator Encarsia formosa which can be bought from various suppliers online.

The cost of the grow bags or containers, the expensive soil, and the fertilizer adds up to 10 times the price it would cost to buy these potatoes at the grocery store. I don't know why people keep claiming they grow vegetables to save money because they have to pay extra to grow this. It is more of a hobby which is fine but they are not saving money.
@vanmeuwenplants4 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct! However, it does allow you to grow varieties that are not available in the shops.
@travv883 жыл бұрын
I think getting some experience growing food is valuable though. It's good to be able to provide for yourself a bit. If you made your own compost then it would be much cheaper. The grow bags would be a one off purchase and would last a while and seed potatoes aren't that expensive (and you might even be able to do your own if you learn).
