Superb hunters and engineers! One of these spiders was taken into space and after being a bit wobbly for a while, it actually produced its web to better tolerances in zero gravity, than when on earth. I shit you not.

That's so cute. Great job. The hens are growing up nicely. They start laying around six months old or so. Hens are very smart and social. Once one figures something out the others will too. I installed one of these doors on my coop. All the hens got it pretty quickly but one. Hot Wings my Copper Barnevellder just couldn't figure it out. Took her nearly two weeks. We had to catch her every night because she couldn't get back in. Then we started having trouble with the door would open and close on its own. We had it on manual, with a remote, so it should not have been doing that. Also we had it powered to an outlet. The worst thing that happened was it closed and we didn't know before night time and all the chickens were left out in the dark. When we went to get the nightly count it was so scary to find none and we had to find them in the dark. So it's still on the coop but unplugged sadly. We couldn't figure out why it was going up and down by itself.

No new trees or suckers from this one yet…we do have grass we mow around the area so that could be why. It isn’t growing super fast where we live maybe because of the salty air, but it is much bigger-it is low growing with a wide canopy-can check it out in the most recent tour we did!

Start fruit, bananas, pineapples, and some citrus are good because there are usually no pests or disease and the raccoons and birds won't bother them either. We put star fruit through a food chopper and freeze the results when too many ripen at once. The result is tasty but takes about 20 minutes to thaw enough to eat. We also peel and freeze bananas, which thaw enough to eat in about 2 minutes. We've grown (Florida) peaches but the racoons would eat them when they were still green and eventually they ripped down most of the trees. Also grew lychee but the birds would eat most of them and then they got LEM. It's not worth growing things that take a lot of effort to protect from wildlife, insects, and fungus. For the same reason I grow small tomatoes, okra, garlic, onions, salad peppers, and stay away from large tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, large peppers. The small tomatoes and peppers will grow and ripen before the pickle worms can destroy them. I'll occasionally grow some cucumbers under mosquito netting, but it's a lot of extra hassle.

Wow those are some great tips thank you!! We freeze our bananas in their peels to save on having to use plastic and they work great for adding to smoothies and baked goods! I can’t wait to have a start fruit problem lol they are so delicious!! I totally agree on growing what grows easily, I feel it’s part of the permaculture way! We have gotten lucky with watermelons once and do well with Everglades tomato but we don’t even have luck with Seminole pumpkins this close to the beach. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us! This is why we love making these videos-it’s all about learning together!

@@IslandsnHighlands The problem with bananas frozen in-peel is that you have to let them thaw a lot before peeling. I planted a star fruit tree about ten years ago and got lucky. It grew like crazy and still does - I trim the top from about 18 feet down to 12 twice a year. It produces three or four times a year with a total of about 400 fruits, most of them quite large. Another that I planted 7 years ago has barely grown and produced maybe 30 fruits in the last year. The extra rain this year gave it a growth surge, but it's still small.

How long does it take from the flower emerging to getting your first banana?
@IslandsnHighlands
@IslandsnHighlands 13 күн бұрын
It depends on some variables-what time of year the flower gets put out, the water that banana gets, and the nutrition it gets. Just going based off time of year- If you get a flower during the winter it will take all winter before you can eat those bananas…and will certainly need to be propped if it’s a tall variety. If you get a flower in the summer a few months you will be ready to eat those bananas!

Wow thanks so much for the nice compliment! We really do need to add some cooking videos to our channel. I love cooking and would love to share how we do things! We process our green bananas but either slicing and freezing while they are green-then just oil, season and bake them at 400 for 20 minutes. We also fry them up green, sliced and fresh in a frying pan with a little oil and salt and pepper! Such an easy starch to add to a meal and cooks up way quicker than potatoes!
