"Plain as cold toast" - brilliant quip. Fantastic cinematography. Just want to point out that the male does use his pedicles to dance - he is doing a drumming move, rather than the flamboyant waving.

Hello Matt. Love you videos. They are very insightful. I have just got into macro and flower photography. Can you please tell me the camera gear you use to take the photos. I am especially interested in the hood that you have over your flash. R

I have noticed the mimicry of the flowers with other orchids. I have also noticed that the colours of the orchids very often correspond with the colours of other flowers which bloom at the same time. Kangaroos like to graze some orchids and the thought often occurred to me that the flower of the orchids blooming at the same time is similar to other wildflowers that bloom at that particular time because they are trying to hide. I know that Australian marsupials see in full colour so this theory would be possible, and if it is the case it is even more astounding how these plants have evolved. We live near York and have an area on our property of approx. 40 acres which is designated as a voluntary private sanctuary where we estimate that close to 40 different orchid species grow wild. We feel that the number of different species growing in such a relatively small area of land is unusual for our area so decided to protect it. This video is very informative and well presented, hopefully you will find the time to publish more often👍

I really love how the spider rotates at 1:09 and stops just the right moment to face the camera, it's such good timing like it knows its being recorded.

Great video and very informative! I'm just getting into macro and finding peacock spiders is definitely on my to-do list. A couple of questions: do you ever try and bracket your shots? In the video you seem to be taking single images. Also what apertures and exposure settings work best? I'm shooting with a similar set-up to those in the video (OM-1, 60mm lens, Godox flash and Cygnustech diffuser). Any advice appreciated!

Great vid, loved it. What month was all this action happening? (4.30 and the sun was going down soon!)
@LookCloser2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Louis, This was October and although astronomical sunset was 18:30, the karri forest gets dark earlier due to the height of the canopy. There are few peacock spiders active after 16:30 at that location.

Bloody brilliant guys - probably the most informative and entertaining peacock spider video you have done Matt. The 7-14 & 14-60 Olympus lenses are amazing but the 60 macro still reigns supreme for all things tiny in the micro 4/3rds world - mark @oz_macro
@LookCloser2 жыл бұрын
I don't know Mark the 60mm is fantastic but it is really had to dismiss the capabilities of the 12-40! Can't wait for the 90mm macro pro!

@@LookCloser The first lens I bought for the Panasonic GH4 was the Olympus 12-40mm F2.8 Pro lens, a mate in WA had it & it was such a superior offering compared to the Panasonic. Its my standard run around lens when not shooting macro, it is however bloody good at that as well.

Awesome to see all your great photos! I've been using kneepads for a bit now like Bridgette and they make a huge difference - you look like a dork (Sorry Bridgette!) but it makes the job so much more easy especially for long hours in the field! On a different note I've got a trip to WA planned for 2023's Peacock Spider season, and a special interest for me is Maratus electricus - do you have any insider tips beyond the general location for that species in particular? I'm also planning on looking for a bunch of others too so any other tips are of course appreciated! At the moment I've only seen the Peacocks around my area of NSW, mostly plumosus and a few anomalus and amabilis as well so I think I lack an idea of where any of the beauties WA has to offer like to hang out beyond the knowledge you've shared in previous videos!
