God bless you as a teacher of young children. I taught for 25 years...mainly Englihs and ESL...but also I did teach 4th grade in a Christian school or two for four years. I love 4th grade, such a great age to learn. My school was great in academics...we even had a chess club in my room. One boy would let me win sometimes. His name was Nicholas and his foather was second ranked adult chess player in all of Louisiana...(Nicholas could sometimes beat his Dad at chess, so he was brilliant).

Students do need a sense of order...so you might try the u-shape or the traditional style. They sometimes like to be in teams of four...they can choose the team name and have competiton for projects etc...just some ideas for you.

Outfit is sooo cute!!! Love a suit on you! Only thing I would say is as being in an administrative position that you are in I would not go with sneakers like that with a suit. I would have tried to be way more professional with say a longed toe flat or a low heel pump or bootie. I do not think the sneaker and suit look is right for your position

I also think this is especially true for classroom management. People are just throwing treats and rewards and PBIS but these kids are severely lacking in intense social emotional learning needs. They are being forced to grow up so fast but they cant handle their emotions without being taught and we’ve decided they only need ten minutes a day for that, at least where i’m teaching. We have ten minutes a day for these kids that need hours of sel lessons and practice and time just bonding with their peers.

You’re so right. Everyone is just looking for the one thing to solve solutions. I understand the science behind the science of teaching reading. I agree with all that. But the way they are choosing to implement in the classroom seems way too disconnected from how teaching actually works. It’s my first year and I find the curriculum so hard to follow because its exactly what you said. And the students are interested in NONE of it because the stories are boring and completely unrelated to their interests. There’s nooo time for interest based reading for them or time for them to follow their own passions. 😭😭😭😭😭

I agree wholeheartedly. However, as a classroom teacher, I am scared to deviate from what the administration/the district is asking for. Previously, I worked at a Title I school where the majority of students were ML learners. We were a targeted school because we fell well below other schools in our districts. We had constant walk-throughs where every small thing was nit-picked. Even the way we displayed student work had requirements. This year I transferred to a new school where it's better, but that fear remains. As a classroom teacher we often see the problems but feel powerless to impact greater change.

@@ashleystarns1949 Did we work at the same school? I swear, we had requirements for every little thing. And admin would spout “evidence” to claim why it had to be done that way. “Students from this one study at a school in the middle of Idaho (that doesn’t have the Internet) saw 12 pages of student work for 40% of their day and they saw a .5% increase in tests scores!! @@BridgingLiteracy I think that pseudoscience always seems to be used to justify what is good for the budget and not is what is good for the kids or teachers. Poor research is a huge part of what has made education so messed up.

I totally appreciate this take and discussion. Granted, I am not even close to upper elementary. I've been teaching preschool within the Head Start program in Lackawanna county Pennsylvania for the past 3 years and prior to that I was in the daycare setting, however I learned during my teaching certification program that it is really important to diversify what types of information I'm pulling in, hence me being a long time follower. In that sense it has led me to be aware of the trends and education in grades well above mine, as it will support my practices in preschool. A big conversation that was had in our agency two years ago was how we are adhering to what fidelity looks like in the classroom, and your discussion here is very similar to what the curriculum trainer helped many of us embrace. Fidelity is about routines and expectations within the self. The curriculum is a skeleton system with some of the organs attached, some of the systems need your expertise as a teacher to fill out the body. Many of the teachers in that training heard Fidelity and truly felt like it's taking their autonomy away. The big push and argument against it was that this is what we spend money on going to school for, we don't need a curriculum that forces us to teach in a specific way. She explained that even though some parts are scripted, we are all talented and capable educators and we need to take the framework and implement that the best we can. Starting small, incorporating mighty minutes with consistency, adhering to the structure of morning meeting with elements that we know are best suited for our classrooms, and that it's not trying to take our autonomy away, it's encouraging us to follow a framework that has been studied and researched for years and sticking to it for the duration of a big chunk of time so we can prove that it works with meaningful data. I can't speak to the other teachers in the agency, but I know that with that mind shift of understanding that it's incorporating a sense of system and routine and how you approach the programming, you can still use your assets and skill sets in the classroom effectively. You can still teach, adjust things and differentiate things as needed, you can be the teacher you trained to be. However, this takes some of the burden of decision making off our shoulders. When you have it built into your routine like clockwork, there is no thinking you're just doing. It becomes part of the brain programming. This allows more time for documentation, it allows more opportunity for self-reflection in the moment. When we are overcomplicating things by throwing in core programs that address all kinds of content (for me it would be specific social emotional curriculums, math programs to address developmentally appropriate needs in early childhood) not just literacy, it's becoming too much and this is where teachers stray, just like you pointed out. When I was student teaching in the Scranton School district, I was in second grade and in observing some of the team meetings and departmentalized meetings, Fidelity was such a foul word lol. And as an older adult embracing my desire to be a teacher (at the time I was 34) I had enough sense to just sit back and observe and not drink the Kool-Aid. I am not a big fan of canned curriculums but I also understand that you can make them work, as long as you follow the structure and stay consistent. Students need time to learn concepts, and we need to make it more accessible and simplifying it is the perfect way to do so. I hope I'm understanding what you're trying to explain and if I'm not feel free to correct me. This is an awesome discussion to be a part of as an observer from the preschool arena that support elementary when my students leave.

Yes, the current system is too complex. At the elementary level at least they need to go back to the 3 Rs or reading, writing and arithmetic. There’s little point in having all of these various academic subjects if the inmates at the local grade school lunatic asylum cannot even learn to read, write or memorize their multiplication tables referred to as “goesintas” by Gomer Pyle.

Hello. I watched your other video first. Our district has just adopted CKLA. I am on unit 2 and am fine tuning my vocabulary instruction.Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you. As I watch and listen I am trying use your suggestions in CKLA. The lessons in CKLA have us introduce vocabulary with the speaking and listening (about 6 vocabulary words) and reading (about 6 vocabulary words). That adds up to about 12 per day each day. It is a lot which is the word every teacher says when they talk about CKLA. They do have a word for “word work” maybe I use those to dig deeper. I have heard you mention CKLA. Do you have any advice of how to do this with CKLA? I did also join your community and will watch your video there.

My new challenge is because it often has a speaking / listening part with about 6 vocab words and it has a reading part with about 6 words. As you probably know this happens almost every day. It is a lot. So do I need to do an annotated version of this of focus on 1-2 words each day.

You are certainly not wrong! Kerr is a verb and a noun. While I didn’t have the parts of speech present on my slides, you would certainly want to point out which part of speech is being utilized and use a variety of examples to show both. The goal is to widen their understanding while also teaching to the word in the text. The paper organizer would have a space to plan for that. ☺️ but yes…. I should have written to at the beginning of my definition. Thank you for the correction.

How do you decide between explicit and face mapping?
@BridgingLiteracy
@BridgingLiteracy Ай бұрын
Choosing words depends on the knowledge of students and how the words are being used in the text. For example, if the word contributes to understanding the overarching storyline then you want to explicitly teach it. If the word has good context clues and doesn’t necessarily add to comprehending the storyline then you can simply fast-map and move on.
